One by one the members of the Clan turned away from Harr until only Ayla was left. Tears were streaming down her face.
“You must turn away also,” signed Groob.
“My mate has died,” signed Ayla, before she turned away also.
Chapter 63: In hiding
Harr remembered from his talks with Creb what comes next. As far as they were concerned, he was a spirit now. And if he refused to leave, they would burn his possessions. He couldn’t let them burn Luna’s trunk. Everything in it was irreplaceable!
Harr ran for his hearth. A packing charm put all of his things in Luna’s trunk. He also took the things that Ayla had left out, the glass vials, many of them with potions already in in them. The cauldrons. He dumped out the most recent batch of polyjuice potion she had been working on and put the cauldron in the trunk.Once everything from the future and all his possessions from this time were packed, he shrunk the trunk and threw on his invisibility cloak. Ayla was approaching with baby Mariza in her arms her arms when he did so. So she saw him vanish before her eyes.
“This woman’s mate as truly departed for the spirit world,” signed Ayla.
“But I will still be watching over you, always,” said Harr in English.
Ayla jumped when he spoke, but them tried to pretend she hadn’t heard him.
Now that Harry was packed and invisible, where to go? The storm was raging outside. It was death to go out there. He couldn’t stay here. He decided to go deeper into the cave to the depths that no one had ever explored.
The cave had a very large chamber near the entrance, connected to another cave where the Cave Bears lived that had it’s own entrance. Deeper in the Clan’s cave was the chamber they used for food storage and the chamber reserved for the Mog-Ur’s use. As the Clan had grown, it had filled up the 1st chamber and new hearths had to be established deeper and deeper into the cave. Harr went past all these hearths before lighting his wand to see. To his relief, the Cloak blocked others from seeing his lit wand, but did not block his sight.
Harr continued through the cave, crawling at times until he found a chamber that was several hours from the last hearth and large enough to pitch a magical tent in. Once the tent was erected, he had a comfortable bed to sleep in and a stove to cook on. Except . . . there was no Ayla to share his bed and he had no food to cook or firewood to burn. He decided to sleep on it.
The next morning, he decided to go back to the Clan for food, firewood, but most importantly to see how the rest of the Clan was doing. When he got the newest hearths, he found that the oldest members of the Clan were living there: Brun and Grod and other elderly members, even Broud. Still under the Cloak of invisibility, Harr helped himself to some food and firewood.
When he got to his own hearth, he found Brak, one of the men who had succeeded in his manhood hunt this year, was living in his hearth with his mate, Vora. She was the only Clan girl to become a woman this year. In the Main chamber, all the best hearths were now occupied by Groob’s supporters. And Broud’s old hearth was now the home of Groob and his two mates: both women of the Others: Medi and Ayla!
Ayla has always been a bit old fashioned. But watching her with Groob, she was acting more submissive, more Clan than she had ever been with him. Right now, she was teaching Clan signs to Medi while she nursed her baby.
What could Harr do about this? He was certain he could beat Groob. Of the Clan, only Uba stood any chance at all against him in a duel. But he couldn’t withstand them all at the same time, especially if they had Uba and Aya fighting for them. He wouldn’t want to hurt either of them.
Outside, the blizzard was still raging. There would be no escape for him out there.
“Teach her what the Signal means,” signed Groob.
Ayla then, said something in Sungean, which Harry had not yet bothered to learn. He had picked up some mamutoi when they were trying to teach Mio Clan signs. But Iga usually used signs, so he hadn’t pressed her to learn her native language. Besides, she had a sexy accent in English. What ever Ayla was saying, she was blushing and looked embarrassed when she said it, especially when she demonstrated the Signal.
“This woman thinks she understands,” signed Ayla.
Groob then, gave Medi the Signal. She responded by eagerly getting into traditional Clan position for Need Relieving.
(At least he’s not doing that with Ayla,) thought Harr. (Who am I kidding. He probably does use her regularly. Though if am honest with myself, even without the imperius, I know she’d not hesitate to Relieve his Need if he Signaled her. I’d better go. I don’t want to see that.)
Even worse than than watching Ayla or Uba enthusiastically Relieving the Needs of a man who had them under imperius control, was watching them teach magic to Ayla’s children. This was supposed to be the winter when they would start seriously teaching magic to Durciza. Instead of getting a wand from Luna’s trunk, which he had, She ended up with a much inferior wand that Creb had made. And it was Uba and Ayla teaching her wanded subjects, not him. Iza’s daughter was also joining them for these lessons. But not, much to her sorrow, Ura, who did not have magic. She was, however joining Lili and Jaymz for their lessons in reading and writing English and how to do math. Lili, being half Clan was maturing slower than a full Clan child, but faster than Jaymz, who was pure Others. They now were about the same maturity level as each other. Durciza and Lili also had partial Clan memories, derived from Ayla, that made it easier to learn things that Ayla once knew.
Harr duplicated the food and firewood he had taken, so he didn’t need to take more. He would sleep and have meals deep in the cave, and every day he would come closer to the surface so he could watch the Clan while under his invisibility cloak, trying to think of a way to reverse all this without getting himself killed in the process. When the time for the Winter Festival he followed wandered around to check on Ayla, Uba and Iga. They all picked some of the young men who had taken over and all seemed to be enjoying themselves.
The storms raged all winter with only brief respites. There were no winter hunts this year, even with the polar clothes Luna had packed in her trunk and he had brought back to this time.
The Sungaean women that had been kidnapped and brought here seemed to be adapting well to life with the Clan and seemed happy. But Harr knew it was the euphoric effects of the Imperius Curse that was forcing them to be happy and that would reverse as soon as the Curse was broken.
Occasionally, when no one was looking, Harr would filch some meal that a woman had cooked. It was a nice change of pace from his own cooking with duplicated food.
Harr was cautious to avoid Creb’s gaze. He wasn’t sure how Mad-Eye Moody had seen through the Cloak, but he didn’t want to risk being revealed.
When Spring finally came, it was a relief. Now that the Clan was venturing outside the Cave, it became easier to dodge Creb and his magical eye.
Seeing Mio break free and Groob reapplying the Imperius curse gave Harr an idea. Still under the Invisibility Cloak, he snuck up on Uba. Quietly, he cast the Imperius Curse out loud to make it stronger.
“Imperio!”
He saw her start as she changed masters to him. He then creeped closer and whispered in her ear in English:
“Meet me in the place where we like to Share Pleasures.”
She made sure her wand was tucked behind her ear, but didn’t bring any weapons with her when she walked out of the cave. Harr followed her out of sight of the cave and into the forrest. We she came to their favorite spot, she turned around and signed:
“This woman is here. Do you want to reveal yourself?”
Harr took off the Cloak and put it away before facing her.
“This Weez-Ur has freed you from Groob’s Imperius Curse by placing under his own,” signed Harr. “You are completely under this Weez-Ur’s control.”
“What are your commands for this woman?” Uba signed, as she began undressing.
Harr switched to English.
“I ORDER you to disobey any future commands given by anyone who attempts use magic to force you to comply.” ordered Harr. “Further more, I ORDER you not to obey anyones commands that you don’t want to.”
Uba closed her eyes and seemed to shudder in ecstasy for a moment before she opened them and pulled Harr into a hug. Harr patted her back, wanting to return her affection, but not wanting to take advantage of her. When she finally broke off the hug, she stepped back and signed at him:
“Harr, you did it! This woman is Free!”
“This Weez-Ur was not certain that it would work,” signed Harr. “This Weez-Ur is glad that it did. But we need to test it. We need to find something that you would not want to do. . . .Go burn your longbow.”
“No! . . . this woman-who-hunts doesn’t want to! . . .It worked! This woman is free!” signed Uba. “So now that this Weech is free, what is our next step?”
“Next we free Ayla,” signed Harr. “After you and this Weez-Ur, she is the most powerful in magic. After her, we’ll free Creb and work our way down until we have enough of us to fight Groob.”
“Then, let’s go!” signed Uba, before putting her wrap back on.
Harr pulled out his Cloak of Invisibility and put it on before following her.
The man of the Others crept back from his hiding place where he had been watching the Clan outside their cave. When he made it back to the main group, he reported:
“It’s them all right,” said Markeno, in the Sharamudoi language. “I saw Jetamio tending a fire that had a bunch of meat drying around it. She was surrounded by a whole pack of flatheads!”
“How many,” asked Dolando.
“At least 40 of them,” replied Markeno.
“Good. Then we outnumber them 5 to 1,” mused Dolando. “Alright, you boys know the mission. We rescue Jetamio and kill every flathead we can find. Let none stay alive!”
“What about Thonolan?” asked Barono.
“If her foreign husband is still alive, that means he’s collaborating with flatheads. He dies too,” ordered Dolando.

Iza’s daughter was also joining them for these lessons. But not, much to her sorrow, Ura, who did not have magic. She was, however joining Lili and Jaymz for their lessons in reading and writing English and how to do math. Lili, being half Clan was maturing slower than a full Clan child, but faster than Jaymz, who was pure Others. They now were about the same maturity level as each other. Durciza and Lili also had partial Clan memories, derived from Ayla, that made it easier to learn things that Ayla once knew.
Harr duplicated the food and firewood he had taken, so he didn’t need to take more. He would sleep and have meals deep in the cave, and every day he would come closer to the surface so he could watch the Clan while under his invisibility cloak, trying to think of a way to reverse all this without getting himself killed in the process. When the time for the Winter Festival he followed wandered around to check on Ayla, Uba and Iga. They all picked some of the young men who had taken over and all seemed to be enjoying themselves.
The storms raged all winter with only brief respites. There were no winter hunts this year, even with the polar clothes Luna had packed in her trunk and he had brought back to this time.
The Sungaean women that had been kidnapped and brought here seemed to be adapting well to life with the Clan and seemed happy. But Harr knew it was the euphoric effects of the Imperius Curse that was forcing them to be happy and that would reverse as soon as the Curse was broken.
Occasionally, when no one was looking, Harr would filch some meal that a woman had cooked. It was a nice change of pace from his own cooking with duplicated food.
Harr was cautious to avoid Creb’s gaze. He wasn’t sure how Mad-Eye Moody had seen through the Cloak, but he didn’t want to risk being revealed.
When Spring finally came, it was a relief. Now that the Clan was venturing outside the Cave, it became easier to dodge Creb and his magical eye.
Seeing Mio break free and Groob reapplying the Imperius curse gave Harr an idea. Still under the Invisibility Cloak, he snuck up on Uba. Quietly, he cast the Imperius Curse out loud to make it stronger.
“Imperio!”
He saw her start as she changed masters to him. He then creeped closer and whispered in her ear in English:
“Meet me in the place where we like to Share Pleasures.”
She made sure her wand was tucked behind her ear, but didn’t bring any weapons with her when she walked out of the cave. Harr followed her out of sight of the cave and into the forrest. We she came to their favorite spot, she turned around and signed:
“This woman is here. Do you want to reveal yourself?”
Harr took off the Cloak and put it away before facing her.
“This Weez-Ur has freed you from Groob’s Imperius Curse by placing under his own,” signed Harr. “You are completely under this Weez-Ur’s control.”
“What are your commands for this woman?” Uba signed, as she began undressing.
Harr switched to English.
“I ORDER you to disobey any future commands given by anyone who attempts use magic to force you to comply.” ordered Harr. “Further more, I ORDER you not to obey anyones commands that you don’t want to.”
Uba closed her eyes and seemed to shudder in ecstasy for a moment before she opened them and pulled Harr into a hug. Harr patted her back, wanting to return her affection, but not wanting to take advantage of her. When she finally broke off the hug, she stepped back and signed at him:
“Harr, you did it! This woman is Free!”
“This Weez-Ur was not certain that it would work,” signed Harr. “This Weez-Ur is glad that it did. But we need to test it. We need to find something that you would not want to do. . . .Go burn your longbow.”
“No! . . . this woman-who-hunts doesn’t want to! . . .It worked! This woman is free!” signed Uba. “So now that this Weech is free, what is our next step?”
“Next we free Ayla,” signed Harr. “After you and this Weez-Ur, she is the most powerful in magic. After her, we’ll free Creb and work our way down until we have enough of us to fight Groob.”
“Then, let’s go!” signed Uba, before putting her wrap back on.
Harr pulled out his Cloak of Invisibility and put it on before following her.
The man of the Others crept back from his hiding place where he had been watching the Clan outside their cave. When he made it back to the main group, he reported:
“It’s them all right,” said Markeno, in the Sharamudoi language. “I saw Jetamio tending a fire that had a bunch of meat drying around it. She was surrounded by a whole pack of flatheads!”
“How many,” asked Dolando.
“At least 40 of them,” replied Markeno.
“Good. Then we outnumber them 5 to 1,” mused Dolando. “Alright, you boys know the mission. We rescue Jetamio and kill every flathead we can find. Let none stay alive!”
“What about Thonolan?” asked Barono.
“If her foreign husband is still alive, that means he’s collaborating with flatheads. He dies too,” ordered Dolando.
