Chapter 64: The Others arrive
The men had a successful hunt. So Mio was helping the women to dry the meat. This meant keeping a smokey fire going near the racks of drying meat. They were arranged around the fire with small spaces to pass between them to tend the fire. When the wind shifted it would blow the smoke on a different rack. Several of the men were Relieving their Needs with their mates on furs they had laid out. More of the men were inside the cave doing the same. So Mio didn’t notice the men of the Others approaching until they were quite close.
“Medeathenariadne?” asked one of the men in Sungaean. “You’re alive?”
Medi looked up at the man and replied:
“Oh. Hi Persusarpedonestor. What brings you here?”
“We can to rescue you from these . . these . . . flatheads!” replied Persusarpedonestor.
By now, the men had stopped using their mates, grabbed their spears and formed a line between this very large group of men of the Others and their women.
Mio didn’t understand Sungaean, so she didn’t know exactly what was going on here. But she guessed that it was about to get bad. She started easing towards the cave.
“Stand aside! These are our women!” demanded Persusarpedonestor.
“Medi! Translate this Leader’s words,” signed Groob. “Men of the Others are not welcome here. Leave!”
“My Leader Groob says that you are no welcome here,” translated Medi.
“What are you on about?” asked Persusarpedonestor. “Animals can’t talk!”
“Yes they can. They talk with their hands,” explained Medi.
“Medeathenariadne, You need to stop this nonsense and come home with us,” replied Persusarpedonestor.
“I am home!” argued Medi. “These are my people now, Groob is my mate now. And my name is Medi now. I’m not Medeathenariadne any more!”
“You Shared Pleasures with a flathead?” gasped Persusarpedonestor, with a shudder. “All of you?”
Most of the Other men shuddered at the thought too.
The other former Sungaea women all nodded.
“They’re not flatheads, they’re Clan!” argued Medi.
“Enough of these mouth sounds,” signed Groob. “Tell them to go away, or we will make them go away!”
Groob lowered his spear to point at them, and the other men of the Clan did the same. When he heard a yell from behind, the young, inexperienced man, Vorg, thrust with his spear and stuck it in the abdomen of one of the men of the Others.
When Dolando led the charge, he found that the flatheads were facing away from them and towards another group of men that he didn’t recognize. Their manner of clothes decoration was different than the Sharamudoi one. One of the flatheads stabbed one of the other men.
Vorg’s stabbing of that man of the others turned this tense confrontation into a battle. The Sungaean men started throwing spears at the Clan, and the Clan men charged them to run them through with their Clan spears. But then the men of the Clan began falling to spears thrown from behind them by the Sharamudoi.
The men of the Clan couldn’t thrust their Clan spears at range. So they pulled out their wands and started silently casting. Groob put Persusarpedonestor in a full body bind, then stabbed him with his spear. Vorg fell to a spear in the back that one of the Sharamudoi had thrown. Vor cast a knock-back jinx at a Sungaea man and followed it with Finger removing jinx. This gave Gron a chance to stab the man with his spear. Then another Sungaean man threw a spear that hit Gron in the throat. Av cast a cuff jinx at a Sharamudoi man, binding his wrists together. Zoud cast a tripping jinx on another Sharamudoi man, causing the mad behind him to trip over his fallen comrade. Barb cast a jelly legs jinx on a Sungaean man, causing him to miss his spear throw. The men of the Clan who were still in the Cave, hearing the noise charged out to aid the men of their Clan.
Ayla, who had been at Groob’s hearth near the entrance, saw what had happened, grabbed her children and fled deeper into the cave.
“Come, we must go now,” Ayla signed to her children.
Mio had turned her attempt to sneak back into a run.
“This way!” signed Ayla, as she led Mio deeper into the cave.
“Wait! I Need to get Mar!” Shouted Mio, in Sharamudoi as she tried to turn back.
“I’ve got him,” said Thonlan as he joined them carrying her son in his arms.
Uba and Harr were sneaking back to the cave when Hermione’s image zoomed to a stop before them.
“I asked Deep Thought to center me on Harry,” said Hermione. “Is he under his Cloak?”
“Yes,” signed Uba.
“You two need to get back to the cave,” admonished Hermione. “Your Clan is under attack by two different Cro-Magnon tribes!”
“Hermi says that people are attacking our Clan,” signed Uba.
Harr removed his cloak, folded it and tucked it in his wrap. He then took Uba by the hand and apparated them both with a:
Pop!
“There’s more of them in the cave!” shouted Dolando. “Let’s kill them all!”
“But Jetamio went in there,” protested Markeno.
“Then, we’d better save her from the flatheads,” shouted Dolando. “Charge!”
Half the Sharamudoi men then charged into the cave, with murder on their minds.
Pop!
Harr and Uba appeared in the middle of the battle, surrounded on all sides by fighting Clan, who wanted him dead, Sungaean men, and Sharamudoi men who wanted to kill everything that moves.
“Back to back,” commanded Harr, in English.
He and Uba began casting chains of spells linking together spells so that the end movement of one led to the start of another. And the spells that Harr and Uba knew were much more lethal that the ones the weez-urs of the Clan could cast.
Cutting Curse Entrail Expelling Curse Shield Charm Levicorpus Flaying Curse!
Bombardment Shield Charm Disintegration Curse Befuddlement Curse Uncontrolled Telepathy Curse!
Ayla, Mio, Thonlan and their children made it out of the first chamber and back to a deeper chamber where the older members of the Clan had been exiled to the lowest ranked hearths.
“What is happening?” signed Brun.
“We are being attacked by the Others!” signed Ura.
Brun, Creb and Grod reached for their spears. They began to hear the sound of men of the Other’s shouting and the women and children of their Clan dying.
“Uba’s children are still out there!” signed Ayla after handing Mariza to Ebra. “This woman has to go find them!”
“This man will go,” signed Creb.
“And this man will help,” signed Broud.
“And this man,” signed Veen.
Clutching their spear in one hand and their wands in the other, the three men moved down the passage towards the first chamber.
Brun, Grod and Crug took up positions guarding the passage in case some men of the Others came this way.
Creb, Broud and Veen entered the first chamber into a scene of horror! The Sharamudoi men were going from hearth to hearth killing women and children indiscriminately!
As soon as they started heading for Bar’s hearth they were spotted and some of the men of the Others moved towards them.
Broud cast a tickling charm on one of them, which slowed him, but the others kept coming. When one got close enough, Broud stabbed him in the heart with his spear. Another threw a spear which impaled Broud in his midsection. He wasn’t dead, but soon would be. This gave the man who threw it time to run up, pull his spear out of Broud, and stab him through the mouth and into his brain.
While this was happening, Veen cast a water-conjuring charm that he aimed at several men at once. It held them back. But he could only point it at one of them at a time. A man he had turned away from threw his spear through Veen’s eye, killing him instantly.
Creb found Uba’s youngest daughters, Viza and dzini at Bar’s hearth. But her oldest son, Vub was not there.
“Run to the back of the cave,” signed Creb, at Viza, as he scooped up dzini to carry her. A man of the others was getting to close, so he stabbed him with his spear. He cast an incarcerous spell that bound another man in ropes. Creb then put the ends of his sling in his teeth, put a ston in the sling, and took it in his hand he wound up and slung a stone adding magic to it so that it flew as supersonic speed through three of the approaching men.
CRACK!
The Sharamudoi men were shocked at the loudness of the sound in this enclosed space and how it made three of them instantly dead.
Creb used this distraction to run to the passage at the end of the cave. The Sharamudoi men quickly over came their shock and chased after him.
