Chapter 65: The battle ends and what comes next
Brun, Grod and Crug were guarding the passages when Uba’s oldest daughter, Viza, came running at them. They let her pass, and right behind her was Creb, followed by a group of men of the Others. As soon as Creb had passed, Brun thrusted with his spear, killing Dolando of the Sharamudoi. Another man took his place and Grod thrust his spear into him. Another man of the Others stepped forward and thrust his spear at Crug, who blocked it. Brun thrust and killed another man. By now, Creb had handed dzini off to Ayla and grabbed a spare spear to take Grod’s place. Another man thrust his spear and killed Crug. Brun then killed that man. Droov then stepped up to take Crug’s place. They kept thrusting their spears into the men of the Other’s until none were left to attack any more.
Outside, Harr and Uba were lethally casting chains of spells to protect themselves and kill all the invaders. One last Cutting Curse on a man’s throat and there was no one left alive but them. Uba and Harr, turned to face each other, their chests heaving as they struggled to catch their breath. Both of them were covered in the blood of their enemies. Once they could breath normally again, their eyes turned towards the cave.
They both walked into the cave. Everywhere they looked there were dead women, children and occasionally, men of the Others. They split up and checked each hearth, looking for survivors, but they found none. Even the Sungaean women of the Others had been killed by the Sharamudoi.
They ventured into the passage that led further into the cave. They found some empty hearths and at a spot where the passages narrowed, they found themselves facing the spears of three very angry men of the Clan. But between them and these spears were a pile of bodies of men of the Others.
“Is there anyone else alive?” Harr signed. “Besides you three.”
“Harr?” Ayla asked, as she peeked from behind Creb. “You’re covered in blood! Both of you!”
Harr and Uba glanced at each other.
“This woman does not think much of it is ours,” signed Uba.
“Let this Medicine Woman see,” signed Ayla, before waving her wand and shouting:
“Scourgify!”
Removing the blood from Uba and Harr revealed only a few minor cuts.
“It’s safe now,” signed Harr. “They’re all dead.”
Seeing how few had survived in the back of the cave was disheartening. But they were happy to see that Brun and Ebra, Creb and Iga and her children, Droov and Bona, Iza, Thonlan, Mio, Ayla and all her children were amongst the survivors. Uba clutched her daughter dzini to her and hugged her other daughter, Viza.
“Where’s Vub?” Uba asked.
“This man did not find him when he went to rescue your children,” signed Creb.
Cautiously, the survivors crept out of the passage and into the first chamber. They split up to see who the dead were. Suddenly, Uba knelt and started keening. Ayla, Creb and Harr rushed to her side, only to find her kneeling and crying over the body of her son, Vub, dead with a spear in his heart. Nearby, was a dead man of the others with a spear in him. Similar scenes played out as they found their children, siblings and cousins dead where they lay along with the men of the Others they had taken to the spirit world with them.
“We need to take care of all these dead people,” signed Iza.
“It would take too long to have funerals for all of them,” signed Ayla. “The bodies will make us sick before we can finish that many funerals.”
“We should each pick someone we’ll do a funeral for,” signed Harr. “The rest, we can burn.”
“This woman picks Vub,” signed Uba.
“Broud,” said Ayla.
“Vuka,” said Harr.
“Zeen, signed Creb.
“Vara,” signed Iga.
“Grod,” signed Brun
“Oga,” signed Droov,
“Brac,” signed Thonlan
“Uka,” signed Ebra
“Droona,” signed Bona.
“Cruga, signed Iza.
“Vorn, signed Abba.
“Brak,” signed Vora.
“Markeno,” said Mio.
They gathered the people they had chosen for funerals, and buried them in the chamber with Zoug. Creb acted as Mog-Ur for the funerals, except for Zeen, which he asked Iga to officiate at. Zeen, son of Creb’s mate, Abba, had been named after Luna’s son from Creb’s previous life. And like that other Zeen, he was a worthy successor as Mog-Ur.
The rest were gathered in three piles: Clan, Sungaea and Sharamudoi. They were able to tell the two tribes of the other apart by the different cut and decoration styles of the two peoples and Iga and Mio could recognize the styles and often individuals of their birth people.
“Wait! Before we burn them, is there anyone we want to bring back to life?” signed Ayla.
“This Weech no longer has the ring,” signed Uba. “This Weech brought Thonlan back to life and he stayed the same age for this Weech’s whole life. This Weech was an old woman when she died and he was still a young man. The Thonlan from that life was not comfortable with that life and made this Weech promise never to bring him back again. And when we decided to come back and re-live our lives, Thonlan was one of the ones who chose not to come back with us. This Weech also brought Creb back briefly even winter to talk about my life without him. He always maintained that it was wrong to bring back the dead.”
“And this weez-ur stands by that belief, still,” signed Creb. “It is wrong to bring back the dead.”
Harr nodded and cast a fiendfire spell that burned the three piles of the dead.
As they watched their enemies, friends and loved ones burn, the Clan fell into a discussion about what was next.
“We need to speak about what is next,” signed Creb. “We have many (5 ) unmated women and two orphan boys. Unlike the Others, women of the Clan can not survive without a man to provide meat and a hearth. They are not women-who-hunt.”
“This man would be willing to take in Bok and Hac,” signed Harr. “This man believes that his totem defeated their mothers’.”
“If she is willing, this woman would have Thonlan take Vora as his second mate,” signed Mio.
“Iga, you once offered to let this woman have Creb as her mate,” signed Uba. “Would you be willing to have this woman as Creb’s second mate?”
“You can be his 1st ranked mate if you want,” signed Iga.
“This man has told you before that it is not appropriate for a man to Share Pleasures with a daughter of his hearth,” signed Creb.
“There is a lot more to being mated than Pleasures,” signed Iga.
“Besides, more than once, when you were Sharing Pleasures with Luna and she turned back into this woman, you didn’t stop,” signed Uba.
Creb looked down in embarrassment.
The Clan remained silent and still. No one made the “Look at me” sound until he looked up and signed:
“This is true . . . . This man will take you as a mate.”
“Eeee!” Uba squealed as she jumped up and pulled Creb into a hug.
“What will happen to this woman? signed Iza.
“You used to live at this man’s hearth,” signed Creb. “You may do so again if it is your wish.”
Uba had crawled into his lap and was nodding along with him.
“This woman has enough status as the Clanluna,” signed Iga. “If you will allow it, Mio, this woman would like to become Thonlan’s 3rd mate.
“That is a agreeable to this woman,” signed Mio.
“If Creb can have his female sibling at his hearth, this man can too,” signed Droov. “Except . . . this man is becoming too old to hunt. . . . this man is not sure how he can bring meat to his hearth.”
“We have enough hunters to support a man who specialized in making fine tools,” signed Harr. “Do not worry and take your female sibling Drora and her daughter, Dorva to your hearth.
“Abba, my sister, would you like to to become Harr’s second mate?” Ayla asked.
Abba looked to Harr’s eyes, saw acceptance and nodded her agreement.
“This all should have been decided by the Leader,” signed Droov. “We need a Leader. Are you going to become our Leader again, Brun?”
“No. This man is too old to Lead hunts or be a Leader,” signed Brun.
“Why don’t we make Uba our Leader?” signed Iga. “She made a very good Leader when she was Luna in our other life. Besides, now that she’s Uba, she’s our best hunter.”
“Amongst this man’s first people and his mate’s first people, woman Leaders are a normal thing.” signed Thonlan. “This man would support Uba as Leader.”
“As would this woman,” signed Mio.
“This man can not accept a female Leader and neither will the other Clans,” signed Droov.
“This woman does not want to be Leader again,” signed Uba, “not with Harr in our Clan. Harr should be Leader.”
“This man doesn’t want to be Leader,” signed Harr. “This man wants to focus on teaching magic to the children.”
“We are all overlooking the man who should have been Leader in the first place,” signed Brun. “Creb is the older sibling. He should have been Leader instead of this man. But Ursus gave him a club foot and later took his arm and eye. But now his club foot has been repaired and his missing arm and eye have been replaced. He might be older than this man, but he looks like a man half his age.”
“It’s because of his magic,” signed Ayla. “People with magic age slower.”
“That is why this man thinks, he should be our Leader, the man who invented sling magic, The famous Mog-Ur. The man who risked his life to save children of the Clan from the Others. Creb should be our Leader!”
Creb looked around . . . all the adults in the Clan agreed with Brun.
They wanted him to be their Leader!
Zorg, son of Vorga, ran. He was one of the boys that was too young to be a man when Groob had recruited him to join him in finding mates. And for a time, he had a mate. When they got back to the cave, Broud said he was too young and hadn’t had a manhood hunt. But then Groob had changed Broud’s mind and let him have a mate, anyway. Groob was planning to take him on his manhood hunt on the next hunt. Instead, Groob was now dead. When he saw his fellow men of the Clan dying around him, Zorg had run away. He’d keep running until he found a new Clan to live with. Groob had taught him the mind control spell. All he needed was to find a new Clan and he could be Leader of it. . . .
