"I'm going to grab a drink," Tyler said, awkwardly shoving his hands in his pockets and heading into the ballroom.
Jade stood there staring at them both. Litzy didn't catch on. She let out a squeal and ran to hug Jade.
"Hey Litz," he said, hugging her back.
"Jade, my darling! I feel like I haven't seen you in 8 million years even though its only been a month!" she laughed.
"I missed you, too," he laughed.
"I'm going to go powder my nose, I'll be back," she said, and left the two of them alone.
Davey attempted to walk past Jade and into the ballroom but he stepped in his path.
"Is there something you wanna tell me?" Jade asked.
"Uhm....no."
"Really? Because I'd like to know what the hell is going on here! I try to set you up with a handsome, intelligent, artistic, young man -"
"I never asked you to!"
"Well you're always going on and on about how lonely you are so I thought I'd be the good friend and find you someone. Course I never would have tried had I known you have a girlfriend!"
"She's not my girlfriend."
"Well even if that's true - how are you supposed to find a man when you're going around kissing girls?"
"She's the only girl I kiss!"
"Wait: Explain to me how that does NOT make her your girlfriend?"
Davey laughed. He did have a point.
"Listen, Litzy knows I'm gay -"
"Good, cause you apparently don't."
"Look, Jade, I don't have to prove my sexual orientation to you!"
"You do when I catch you kissing girls!" he yelled. He lowered his voice to a whisper and took on the look of a naughty 8th grader. "Do you two...Do It?"
"No," he laughed.
"Good. But...do you want to?"
He took a moment to think about it. He had only been with a girl once. His first time was with a girl, actually. It was when he was fourteen. He didn't really remember what it felt like, but he remembered that he thought it was kinda nice. He wasn't about to tell Jade that. Jade couldn't even stand the thought of hetero sex.
Truthfully, though, he had thought about Litzy...not about technically having sex with her, but about being close to her. Once she had gone from Chicago to Detroit on the tourbus with them, and it rained all through the night. They had spent hours on the back of the bus together under a blanket talking. She'd said that it was so much fun being on the road. He'd thought to himself that it had never been so much fun before. She fell asleep and he got to cuddle her and stroke her hair while she slept and was unaware. He studied her features and lightly caressed her skin. He started to think about what it would be like to someday do a more...in-depth...exploration of her body, but then stopped his brain short. She was his friend and she was a woman. It was just too complicated.
"It would just be too complicated," he said, in response to Jade's question.
"'It would just be too complicated,'' Jade mimicked back, moving his head from side to side, mockingly. "You're changing. Who are you?"
"I'm me. You're blowing this way out of proportion."
Jade just rolled his eyes.
"What if I did? What if I did sleep with Litzy? Then what?"
"Then you'd be denying who you are. And you'd be fucking up the dynamics of this band."
"That's bullshit, and you know it."
"No, man, we're tight because we stick together and we stick together because we're the same. We're all straightedge, we're all vegan and we're all gay. When you start fucking girls, getting high and eating Whoppers I have no fucking clue what's going to happen. But hey - if you wanna go and be like all those repugnant self-absorbed unoriginal assholes we hate, go right ahead and shit on everything we stand for."
Jade had gotten so angry he'd turned red. "If you'll excuse me, I have to go do damage control with Tyler," he said, then turned and walked away.
Davey was in a state of shock. He couldn't believe Jade's reaction to an innocent kiss or the idea that he might have feelings for Litzy. And the more he thought on it, the more he knew the rest of the band would feel the same way. He didn't want to think about it, though, because the idea of them being disappointed in him wasn't a pleasant one. He decided to go mingle. He didn't really want to, but he knew people wanted to see him.
He went back into the ballroom and talked to some people, danced with a few guests and received gifts and birthday wishes. Then the cake was brought out and everyone had cake. This year nobody even complained that it was vegan. The gift table was overflowing, and though he was dreading going through them and opening them, he figured it meant he was loved. And that made him feel happy.
He surveyed the crowd. Paris Hilton was getting shitfaced on champagne, Beyonce and Jay-Z were all cozy in a corner, the Olsen twins were hitting on guys twice their age and Ville Valo and Bam Margera were drawing a lot of female attention. There were no surprises that night.
"Hey," Litzy said, bumping him from the side.
"Hey," he smiled. "Having fun?"
"Yep. Are you?"
"Yeah. Its actually a good time."
"Good, you're embracing the whole birthday concept. Now it's time for me to give you your present."
"Now?"
"Now," she said, nodding her head.
"How about later?"
"When's later?" she asked, eyebrow raised.
"Later is when we get back to the hotel and we have some privacy."
She thought this over.
"Okay," she smiled.
"In the meantime, would you like to dance?"
"I would love to -"
Before she could finish a blonde woman in a skin tight black dress pushed her aside.
"Davey! I've been waiting to say hello to you all night! Do you remember me?"
Vaguely. But he had learned never to say he didn't remember someone.
"Of course. How are you?"
"Well on cloud 9, this party is amazing! Come dance with me?"
"I'm sorry, I just promised a dance to this lovely young lady," he said, taking Litzy's hand.
The floozy shot Litzy a deathglare but then smiled at Davey sweetly. "Save one for me?"
"I sure will," he smiled and led Litzy onto the floor.
Back at the hotel, Litzy waited up until 4:30 for Davey to come get his present. The party had ended around 2:00 and everyone made their way to after parties or bars or home or off to shag someone. Jade was in a foul mood, she could tell, and when the limo reached the hotel Davey whispered in her ear "I'll come down to your room." That was at 2:30. Around 4:00 she was near passing out because the time zone change was kicking her ass. She could barely keep her eyes open. She so wanted to see him before she went to sleep that night, and she wanted to believe her present meant enough to him for him to at least come get it. She was sitting up watching television but then she just gave up. She stood up and peeled her dress off, drowsily throwing it on the chair. She bent over to unhook her garters from her thigh his and stopped as there was a knock at the door.
"Who is it?"
"I'll give you one guess," Davey said.
She looked back at the dress on the chair and considered the work it would take to get back into it. She looked down at her La Perla red satin and lace bra and panty set with matching garter. She looked at her suitcases thinking of all the trouble it would be to go through them and find something to wear. She looked at the door, wistfully. She decided it didn't matter, since life was cruel and henceforth Davey would never be turned on by her, or anything she wore, anyway. So she answered the door.
"Hey," she said, leaning in the doorway. "I thought you forgot all about me."
Davey stood there staring at her blankly.
"Davey?"
He cleared his throat.
"Uh...wh..."
"Are you okay?" she asked. "Do I need to feel your forehead?"
He cracked a smile then. "No, no I'm okay."
"Wanna come in?"
He gave her a strange look, but walked in and had a seat on the edge of the bed.
She went to the nightstand and picked up a black box then handed it to him. She sat down next to him and watched him open it. He gasped then smiled.
"Where on Earth did you find this?" he asked, taking the silver necklace out of the box and looking at the pendant. It was a bunny, the same kind as on the latest AFI CD, encrusted with diamonds.
"I had it made," she said.
"That's a lot of diamonds."
"It's Bling Bling Bunny," she giggled.
He laughed.
"Thank you," he said, hugging her. "It's...awesome. Amazing."
"Well you're welcome," she said, softly.
"Put it on me?" he asked, handing it to her. So she did. He went to the mirror to admire it, and when he came back she was lying in the middle of the bed, half asleep.
"Litzy?" he called, climbing onto the bed and looking down at her. "Litzy love? Are you asleep?"
She woke up and upon seeing his beautiful face above her she did the only thing she could do. She pulled him down to her and kissed him.
Jade stood there staring at them both. Litzy didn't catch on. She let out a squeal and ran to hug Jade.
"Hey Litz," he said, hugging her back.
"Jade, my darling! I feel like I haven't seen you in 8 million years even though its only been a month!" she laughed.
