The Storm
The night-time world may be dark,
but it is never still or quiet.
In every city, town and park,
the night-chorus can drown out a riot.

Yet, when dark clouds roll in over the moon
and the air grows thick with threat of violence
The night-time singers seem to swoon
into a deafening silence.
A rolling and rumbling,
growling, grumbling
follows flashes of light
eerily piercing the night.
The crack of lightning, the thunder's boom
must surely portent the earth's doom.

Suddenly rain begins to pour.
The dry earth groans and sighs with relief,
then greedily begs for more.
And hoards the treasure now soaking the ground, like a seasoned thief.

Then thunder rolls through the night once more,
But further away than before.
And the rain begins to slow.
Then stops.
From the previous continuous flow,
now remains only drops.
Silence descends once more on the night.
Then the silence is broken.
Having now forgotten their fright,
as if by some agreement unspoken,
the night singers emerge from their holes,
eager to resume their appointed roles.

The night-time world may be dark,
but it is never still or quiet.
In every city, town and park,
the night-chorus can drown out a riot.
