Three Words
Fire, Clock, Certainty.
She inadvertently stroked the mug of coffee sitting forgotten on the kitchen table as she gazed, unseeing, into the blazing fire. Gone. A solitary tear trickled down her cheek, unhindered. The solemn ticking of the clock on the wall was the only noise that accompanied the pops and cracks of the burning flames. The lukewarm coffee offered little comfort to the distraught woman, but comfort was not a pleasure she could endure now. Gone. She drew herself out of her unthinking, indefinite reverie and pulled her hands away from the cup to hug her coat close to her shaking body. Dead. The certainty of her movements went unnoticed, for there was no one left to witness her precise actions. Dead. Gone.
