That night was the VMAs and the boys were worried because what with their time at the hospital they hadn't had much time to practice their performance. Then there was the fact that Tyler was still a wreck when they'd left him but they couldn't stay. And they had no idea what to do for him or where to send him after he was discharged, since he would need someone to help take care of him for awhile. They had decided to worry about it after the show.
Litzy, on the other hand, was worried about the fact that this was the night when everyone - the band, the press and the fans - would find out about the engagement. She had been surprised to learn that Davey hadnt told anyone in the band that he was going to propose to her. He'd said he didn't need their permission to live his life. She could understand that, but she also worried that maybe he hadn't told them because he expected the response would be really negative. He didn't want to keep it from them, so he was planning on telling them at the after party when they would be in a good mood.
Then there was the fact that a long time ago Davey's fans had pretty much either figured out he was gay or decided for themselves that he was, and that was the way they liked seeing him. This would be the first time ever that they would see their idol with a girl on his arm. And this girl was going to be wearing a red halter-style dress with no sides and a pair of gold sandals that tied around her ankles and all the way up her calves. Had she known the significance of the evening before she did her shopping she would've chosen something much more understated. However, it was a very expensive piece of fabric loosely categorized as a dress, and she didn't really have any other options handy.
When Davey saw her all done up for the night, he got this dumbfounded look on his face.
"You hate it. It's too much. You know what, I just won't go -"
"No no no, I don't hate it."
"You don't?"
"I definitely don't hate it," he said, looking her up and down.
"There's not enough of it is there?" she whispered.
"I was thinking there's far too much of it," he laughed.
"Oh c'mon. Any less and I'd just be naked!"
"Exactly!" he said, putting up a finger as though that was his master plan.
"Funny. I am not going naked to the VMAs," she giggled.
"I didn't say anything about going anywhere..."
"Ooh, I see how you are. Naughty. Well, we are not staying home tonight, because you have to go get your award for album of the year."
"We're not gonna win," he pouted.
"You will. Decemberunderground was pure genius. And now back to the important subject of me. I'm glad you like the dress, but I'm not sure it'll go over well tonight."
"Who cares if it doesn't?"
"Don't you care? You're the one the press is gonna tease for having a fiancee with poor fashion sense."
"You don't have poor fashion sense, you always look great. And if some idiot thinks otherwise, no, I don't care. Litzy, from tonight on people are going to make fun of you. Just like they make fun of me. It just comes with the territory. Are you really going to let them spoil our fun tonight?"
"No. You're right. No matter what happens I'm not going to let it get to me."
"Good. Besides, it doesn't matter what you wear. I think you're amazing, and I'm proud that you're mine."
"Awww. Thanks, baby," she said, going all warm and fuzzy.
There was a knock at the door. It was Jade, come to tell them that the limo was waiting. He gave Litzy the once-over.
"Nice. What is that a sash?" he asked, inspecting her dress. "Oh no, it really is a dress. Wow. Can I try this on later?"
"No!" she laughed. "To the car, you!"
"Stingy," he shot back over his shoulder.
There was an odd silence in the limo. Nobody was talking. She had traveled with them a lot of places and had never seen anything like this. Even when they were angry with each other they had the camaraderie to just bitch at each other until they either felt better or worked it out. Whichever came first. But this silence was scaring her. This was the kind of silence you heard when things were beyond conversation. She and Davey weren't saying anything either. She had no clue what to say. She'd never been more uncomfortable in her life. Especially since she knew the silence was about her. Aside from the fact that they probably didn't want Davey dating a girl, there was also the fact that Management never let them bring male dates to public events. So Davey was the only one enjoying the company of a significant other that evening. That had to make them at least a little jealous.
She didnt know if Davey just got sick of their brooding and decided he didnt care or if he wanted to piss everyone off, but he decided to cuddle her. He put his arm around her and pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her. She definitely wasnt going to protest. If there was anywhere on Earth she'd want to be it was in a limo in Davey's arms. But before she could really truly enjoy it, there was a loud scream from Hunter.
"OH MY GOD! WHAT IS THAT?!!?" he cried, pointing in their direction.
They both thought it must be a scary bug or something so they started looking around on the seat and windows.
"Where?" they asked.
"There - that huge rock on your ring finger, Litzy!"
They both looked at each other, knowing the jig was up.
"Is that what I think it is?" Hunter asked.
"We were going to tell you guys this later tonight," Davey said. "But since you noticed...Litzy and I are engaged."
"You're WHAT?" Jade exploded.
"We're getting married."
They all sat there looking too outdone to comment. Litzy was sure they'd be having a very serious conversation with Davey if she wasn't there.
"Well you could at least pretend to be happy for us," Davey said.
Adam cleared his throat. "Congratulations."
Hunter just stared as if he didn't get it.
"Yeah, congratulations and all that," Jade said. "When's the wedding?"
"We haven't picked a specific date but we're thinking mid April."
"Really?" he asked.
"Yeah. Really."
Silence.
For about five minutes everyone rode in silence.
"Can I just say -" Jade began, with a look on his face that told all he was about to open up a can of worms.
"NO," Adam cut him off. "No you can not say. Not right now."
Jade rolled his eyes and commenced to staring out of the window.
Finally, they arrived at the Awards and they made their entrance. They did some interviews on the red carpet. Everyone kept asking Davey who he had with him. Once he introduced her, they wanted to take pictures of her and her dress and her ring. Then they wanted pictures of her and Davey together. It was a bit overwhelming. When they finally were able to make it inside, she was relieved. She could relax and not worry about whether or not she was smiling too big or if her boobs were showing on the sides of her dress or if people thought she was a good match for Davey or if her jokes were witty enough.
Davey went backstage but she headed to her seat and mingled with the people around her row. She ended up sitting next to Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, and they were really nice. Gwen complimented her on her dress. Given Gwen's maverick style, she wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Then Gwen mentioned she was pregnant with her second child and that's when they really hit it off. They started talking about babies, pregnancy and labor and soon Gavin had to switch seats with Gwen for them to sit by each other.
AFI was playing early on in the night so Davey wouldn't be coming out for awhile. She knew she could be back there with him but he was probably either doing interviews or fighting with his band. Besides, being a huge music freak, she wanted to watch the show. So she stayed in her seat until the show started and she enjoyed the performances, but especially the AFI performance. She'd been a hardcore AFI fan in her college days and she even had an AFI tattoo on her shoulder. She'd kept it hidden from Davey for about a year, though. She didn't want him to think of her as a fan and not a person that he could really spend time with. When he did find out about it he was blown away. It seemed it made him like her more instead of less as she had feared.
After their performance they changed and took their seats out front. Litzy was so happy to have Davey with her. Even though all he did was make fun of other people in her ear and cause her to almost die of suppressed laughter. AFI was nominated in a couple of categories, one of which was Best Video, and they lost that one. That perhaps explained Davey's surprise when their name was called for Album of the Year. It was a moment of sheer elation and the 5 of them all stood up. Davey gave her a big kiss and hug, which she wasnt expecting at all. But it felt really good to be included in the joy. She sat down as they made their way up to the podium, looking fabulous as they always did. Each member said his thank-yous. Davey went last, and once again she found herself bowled over.
"I'd like to thank our fans first and foremost for supporting us over the years. You're amazing, every last one of you. And I want to thank my family - my parents and my beautiful fiancee - your love and support means the world to me, I love you, I couldn't have done this without you."
She had always teased Davey over the years about thanking her in liner notes, to which he always said with a smirk 'What for? All you do is look pretty.' But he must not have truly believed that because she did start showing up in the liner notes. She'd never thought that one day she'd be thanked on MTV and named as family. She decided that despite the fact that the day started off on a bad note, it had turned out to be one of the best days of her life.
