Learning to Love the Smell
(of Vomit in the Morning)

learning to love the smell of vomit
in the morning
it's pungent, sour odor signaling
i'm still alive

some grey dawns i smell it,
coming from another room
after a long night of discipline
it lets me know,
I was successful, power still in my hand

some putridly bright spring mornings
i wake up in it caked around me
and i am disgusted and humbled
while i wait to be rescued from my filth

i hate it,
it's gross,

but i learn to love the smell
it means i'm still alive
