A Tribute to Neruda and Unrequited Love

by angelican 1 review

I love Pablo Neruda's works. They are thought-provoking, incredibly sensual, and absolutely beautiful. I hope I don't do him a disservice by attempting to make one of his poems in a way be my own ...

1Insightful
tonight i can write the most pathetic lines.

write, for example, "i'm sitting by the window,
it's raining and you are not with me."

the night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

tonight i can write the most pathetic lines.
i loved you, though you may not have ever loved me.

through nights like this one, i longed for you in my arms.
in my dreams, i kissed you again and again under the endless sky.

did you ever love me? for till now, i remember how i loved you.
how could i not adore your warm, loving eyes.

tonight i can write the most pathetic lines.
to think that i do not have you. to feel that i'll never do.

to hear the immense night, still more immense without you.
and my sighs fall from the watchful sky like dew to the pasture.

what does it matter that you did not know that i loved you?
the night is shattered and you are not with me.

this is all. in the distance, i see you with someone.
my soul is not satisfied that it has not known you.

my soul searches for you as though to go to you.
my heart looks for you but you are not with me.

the same night darkening my new grief.
my chance, of that time, has now passed.

i no longer love you, that's certain, but how i loved you.
my heart tried to say the words but they did not touch your hearing.

another's. you are now another's. like my kisses before.
your smile. your bright mind. your infinite eyes.

i no longer love you, that's not certain, for i still do.
for love that has never been spoken is rarely forgotten.

because through nights like this one, i longed for you in my arms.
my soul is not satisfied that it has not known you.

though this be an eternal pain that you'll make me suffer.
and these the first verses that i write for you.
