Davey had absolutely no experience with the OB/GYN's office, nor had he ever prior concerned himself with what went on inside it. Henceforth, when it was time for Litzy to have her first ultrasound, he wasn't quite sure what to expect. She had told him pretty much what it would entail the night before. So he wasn't worried. But he was very uncomfortable in the waiting room. Other women kept staring at him or staring at both of them. And it was so quiet in there. He was so impatient that he was chewing the pink fingernail polish off of his nails. In fact, he had several of his fingers plugged into his mouth and he was leaning forward in the chair with his sunglasses on his head to hold his hair back. With his other hand he held hands with Litzy, mostly because he was on edge. She seemed to be doing fine. He just wanted to go in there and have the procedure done, then hear that his baby was doing fine in there and everything was going to be alright. And.....that it was a boy.
They had been told before coming in that it may be too early to determine the sex of the baby, but he had his heart set on finding out. Litzy had asked him in the car on the way over if he would be disappointed if it was a girl. He'd said "of course not," and gave a long speech about how he would love and cherish her and she'd be Daddy's Little Girl. That was true, but deep down he still really wanted a boy. A son to be just like him and look like him. A son he could teach things to and guide in the right direction.
Because his biological father had died when he was a young boy, he'd always wished for the true father/son connection. Paul had been a wonderful stepfather to him, he'd always been there for him. But he was not his biological father. It seemed the only way he would ever understand that connection would be to have a son of his own. Of course he wanted daughters with Litzy, too, but since she'd said she was only giving him one child, this was his only shot.
His phone vibrated and he took it out of his pocket and looked at the display. It was Jade. He'd called twice that day. He put it back in his pocket. He would call back later.
They were finally called and Litzy's doctor, Dr. Bradley, introduced himself to them. He seemed nice and professional enough for him to trust him with the care of his fiancee and baby. Davey took a seat next to Litzy while the doctor got her all ready and began the procedure. He was surprised that he couldn't see more on the monitor, but Dr. Bradley seemed to see a fair bit. He did measurements and checked out everything, then said everything was going normally for her stage of pregnancy. He let them hear the baby's heartbeat and showed them on the screen the baby's outline. It was amazing. It just made it so much more real to him that there really was a baby inside her. Their baby.
"And perhaps I can tell you what I'm sure you're dying to know, if we could just get a different view," Dr. Bradley said, rolling the device across Litzy's abdomen. "There we are. Well, would you like to know the sex of your baby?"
"I think you should tell us before Davey bursts," Litzy said.
He chuckled. "What do you want, Dad, a boy or a girl?"
"A boy," he said. "But I'll be happy either way."
"And what do you want, Mom?"
"A short labor and a healthy baby?" she offered.
"I'll do my best to help you with that," he smiled. "I can't make it shorter, but I can make it safe."
"Works for me," she said. "Can you make it painless, too?"
"No, it is going to be painful," he admitted.
"Great. And can you believe he," she said, pointing at Davey, "asked me how many kids I want last week?"
"Oh no no no, you don't ask a pregnant woman questions like that. If you want more kids you wait until this one's at least six months. By then she's forgotten all the discomforts of pregnancy and labor."
"Thanks for the advice," Davey said, with a smirk. "But are we having a boy or a girl?"
"You're having a boy."
Litzy looked at him and smiled and a big grin spread over his face.
"I told you so," he told Litzy.
"You did tell me. Now we know what color to get when we go shopping for the baby."
"I cant believe this, this is so wonderful," he said and kissed Litzy's forehead. "You are so wonderful."
"No, you are wonderful," she said, stroking his hair.
"What about me? I am pretty wonderful," Dr. Bradley joked.
Litzy laughed. "Yes, you are."
Davey's parents, Penny and Paul, were ecstatic to hear as everyone sat around the dinner table that they were going to be having a grandson. They ooh'ed and aah'ed over the ultrasound photos even though there wasn't much visible except a head and an eye. They were already convinced he was going to have Davey's eyes. Litzy just laughed and made a face at Davey while they weren't looking.
"Oh, it'll be so nice to have a baby boy in the family again!" Penny said, beaming. "Litzy, I'm so glad you moved here. I'm so glad you and Davey decided to get married."
"Me too," Litzy smiled, squeezing Davey's hand. He kissed her cheek.
"So have you two set the date yet?" Paul asked.
"We're going to really soon, we just have to sit down and work some things out and look at the schedule and call a wedding planner."
"You'll have plenty of time for that," Penny said. "I mean, you have a year after all."
Litzy looked at Davey as if to say 'Eek!'
"We don't really want to wait that long," Davey said.
"Why not? You dont want to get married while you're pregnant, do you, Litzy?"
"Ah, I wouldn't want to be showing," she said. "But I did hope to be married before my baby is born. I want him to be born into a family. And as much as I may feel part of this family, I'm not."
"Not in the fullest sense," Paul said. "But you will be."
"So then you were shooting for an earlier date?" Penny asked.
"Mid-April," Davey said.
"But how would you manage that?" she asked.
"Wedding planner?" Litzy suggested.
"That's not enough time even with a wedding planner. You have to give your guests enough time to clear their schedules so they can come, Davey."
"Well, we dont want THAT many people there..."
"Well how many guests do you want?"
Davey and Litzy both looked at each other, having no clue. Litzy said 200 and Davey said 2,000.
"Do you even have 2,000 friends?" Litzy asked.
"Oh sure."
"Wow, I think I have like five."
Davey laughed, grinning his adorable grin where he gets crinkles by his eyes.
"It's okay, hon, soon my friends will be your friends, too."
"Well you just cant have any kind of wedding you'd want without six months bare minimum of planning," Penny said. "You dont want everything to be rushed and cheap do you?"
"No," both Litzy and Davey said at the same time.
"It's up to you, it's your wedding," Paul said.
"No, you're right. We need more time to plan," Davey said. "What do you think of Valentine's Day 2008, Litzy?"
"That's fine," she said, blandly.
"Now that's reasonable," Penny said.
His parents smiled, content, but Davey could tell this wasn't going to sit well with Litzy.
After dessert and coffee when the Marchand's had gone home, Davey returned some of his phone calls. Jade was in a foul mood because he hadn't been returning his calls, and when he explained what he'd been doing that just seemed to make him even more perturbed.
"So since you've spent the last consecutive 2 days with Litzy, did you at least ask her about the song like you told me you would?"
"No, not yet -"
"Figures."
"But I'm going to right now!"
"Yeah well, let me know what she says."
He went upstairs to find Litzy and ask her. She was in the master bathroom in the big round tub taking a bubble bath. She had some soft moody music on and her hair was piled up on top of her head. When she saw him she blew bubbles at him like one would blow a kiss.
"Hi," he smiled.
"Hi."
"I uh...I wanted to ask you something," he said, forgetting for the life of him what he'd come to ask her.
"What's that, love?"
"I seem to have forgotten. May I join you?"
"I thought you'd never ask."
She watched every single second of him undressing and invited him into the tub with open arms. He greeted her with a kiss, enjoying the relaxing sensation of the hot water and jacuzzi jets.
"So this whole idea of us putting off the wedding..." he began, caressing her face.
"It's not what I want."
"Me neither."
"So..." she said, tracing a finger across his bottom lip. "We need to find a way to make us happy, but still make everyone else happy."
"I have an idea," he said, and kissed her.
