All around Harry was only grassland. He could see nobody, nothing moved; the only thing he could sense was the wind, which seemed never to stop there. At last, he was alone in an area somewhere in Ireland. Now he could play and see what the results would be.
To get there was easier then he thought. At five in the morning, he sent a note to Dumbledore, explaining his problem and asking him if he could help. He needed a large piece of land, where nobody lived, and where he could experiment with his elementals. Hedwig seemed to be faster than normal for an unknown reason, because after he was back from his morning exercises with Tonks, there was the answer waiting for him. A short note from Dumbledore and an old shoe were lying on his bed. How it had come to his room, he was not sure, but he expected Fawkes, the amazing Phoenix from Dumbledore.
Dear Harry,
Here is the Portkey, which will bring you to an empty area somewhere in Ireland.
When you are back, please let me know how it went and if there are any new developments. I want to visit you tomorrow, if that is all right with you.
Good luck,
Albus Dumbledore.
He held out his hand and concentrated on a fire element. One of the twenty red light bulbs shone more brightly, and a flame came into his hand. Harry released the flame and the flame disappeared.
He concentrated himself on two fire elementals, and willed the flame back to his hand. The flame appeared, but he saw no difference in the flame - it was neither brighter nor larger, it was the same old flame.
He concentrated himself now on creating a wall of fire.
In front of him, a ball of fire appeared out of nothing. The colour of the flames was white, he did not notice smoke, and only pure fire was burning in the form of a ball. Harry wanted to see a wall. He concentrated on the ball and wanted to stretch it. Slowly the ball stretched, but not by much. With a sigh, the ball disappeared, and Harry continued to experiment.
After two hours of hard work with his fire elemental, Harry managed to stretch the ball of fire until it looked like a wall. Actually, the fireball was still a ball, only now it was oval shaped. This work was taking a lot of his energy... he felt tired. When Harry studied his light bulbs above his head, he saw no difference in the colours that they were before. He felt a bit anxious, because working with fire was something that awed him. He realized the danger of the fire, and if something went wrong, he could lose his life!
Harry concentrated on one earth elemental. He willed it to scan his body, and to correct what was wrong. The wonderful feeling of freshness streamed from his abdomen, spreading all over his body. He could feel some sharp stabs of pain in his stomach, but it went away quickly and Harry felt rested. He didn't realize that he could use his elementals to give himself more energy. That was truly amazing.
The wind became more intense, and he became a little cold. Harry concentrated on his elemental to slow down the wind. It did not work, because the wind was still there. Then, he visualized a large cocoon, which surrounded him and where there was no wind. That worked. He willed the cocoon to change its colour... a bluish dome appeared around him, and there was still no wind. The wind was gone!
He let the dome collapse, and the cold wind appeared immediately. Harry heard a small smacking sound, and assumed that was because of the collapse of his dome. Harry willed the dome to come back, and immediately the wind was gone and the bluish dome reappeared. He willed the dome to become larger, and the dome grew in size. He willed the air to thicken at the borders of his dome. He did not see any difference, but he had the feeling of accomplishment.
That feeling was always the same when he used his elements to do a task with success. When something did not work, he always had a feeling of loss. After some experimenting with the size and colours of the dome, Harry decided to play with an air elemental more, while maintaining the dome.
Harry looked around him, searching for a larger object, like a stone. Fifty meters away from him, he saw a rock. He willed his air elemental to lift the rock, and to his pleasure, the rock was lifted. Then he willed his elemental to throw the rock with all his might into the sky. The rock disappeared immediately.
Harry repeated the process. He found the rock, and willed it to be thrown in the air, but with less power. Harry continued to experiment with throwing rocks, but still the rock simply disappeared. He repeated the process with other elements. He used the fire elemental to throw the rock, but that was much slower. Then, he saw the actual movement of a rock being lifted and thrown into the air. When he tried to repeat the process with the water element, the effects was better than the earth and fire elements, but not as fast as the air. The rock was thrown into the air in a straight line with a lot of power - almost like a rocket. Then, he saw a long tail of fire in the sky where his rock had disappeared.
He repeated this process several times with the water element. The bigger the rock, the more fire in the sky; he suspected because of the speed, the rock started to function like a rocket. The fire in the sky was caused by the heat, produced by air-resistance. His rock flew simply too fast.
This brought him back to the air elemental. When he moved the rock, there was no fire, and the disappearance was immediate. After several hours throwing rocks, Harry became bored. He had a good control over his throwing powers and was satisfied that at least he learned one thing to control.
Suddenly, he realized something that he hadn't thought of before. Could he see what an element could see? Was it possible that an element could see?
He willed an elemental to move hundred meters north from him. Indeed, one air elemental disappeared from the crowd of his light bulbs. Harry was looking to the north, but he could see no light bulb. Now he concentrated himself on the elemental, and willed it to see what the elemental could see. He could see himself from a distance!
The view which came to him was much sharper than Harry himself could see. He was amazed! He willed the elemental to come towards himself, and he saw the view changing. He became suddenly larger, and the environment surrounding him came into view, but in an opposite direction. Very weird feeling that was, he thought.
Then he willed the air element to move one kilometre away, and looked again. He saw himself very small in the middle of the grassland. Suddenly Harry smirked. Harry willed his air elemental at Privet Drive. Nothing seemed to happen at first, but suddenly he saw the house of his uncle and aunt in view. He willed the elemental towards the house, and the house came into focus. His elemental entered the house, and saw his aunt busy cleaning the living room. She did not notice anything.
Harry let the elemental zoom into the face of his aunt, and the large horse-like face of his aunt zoomed into view. His aunt still hadn't noticed anything. Harry was busy experimenting for several minutes with the air elemental, and watched several people at the Privet Drive. He willed his elemental to move to Hogwarts. He was watching professor Dumbledore sitting on his desk in his office; the old man was sleeping. Harry laughed. Then he moved his elemental to the Burrow, and he saw Mrs. Weasley working in the kitchen. She was busy to prepare dinner: potatoes with salad and chicken. Yummy! He noticed Ron at home, and he was busy talking to his mother. Harry could see the lips moving, but could not hear any sound.
Whatever he did, he could not let his elemental hear sound; it could only watch. Pity, but he could not have everything, he realized.
Then, he swapped to other type of elementals, but that did not seem to be possible. Only his air elemental was able to show him pictures. The earth elemental refused to move at all, and his water elemental disappeared at his command, but he could not contact it. He tried with the fire elemental, but that did not work either.
Then he tried something else. With his air elemental, he was concentrating himself on his room at the Privet Drive. He was searching for a book, and he found it. He willed his elemental to take the book, which it did not. Harry decided to return his elemental, and he did the same with a rock nearby. The rock floated in the air in front of his face. Harry willed to rock to go to Privet Drive, and the elemental with rock disappeared! He concentrated on his elemental, he could see the view of his room, and the rock lay in the middle of his bed.
After practicing for fifteen minutes, he managed to move thirty rocks on his bed. It looks like that he was able to move things from his location to the other location, but he was not able to move things from somewhere else to himself. He wondered if he would be able to use his air elemental to move himself.
Harry looked to an air elemental, and willed himself ten meters away. Harry blinked. Was he ten meters away? It seemed that something had changed, but he was not sure. He repeated the experiment again, only this time a kilometre. Harry was aware that his position was changed. It happened instantly. He willed himself to the front lane of the Privet Drive. Instantly he was there. Again, Harry willed himself to Ireland, and he was back to where he was before.
He realized the possibilities he had now. He could travel at will. Let's try to move to Hogwarts. First, he sent his elemental to his Gryffindor common room to see if somebody was there. Nobody was there, and everything seemed to be quiet. He willed himself to the common room, and after a strange stretching feeling, he appeared in the common room!
That strange stretching feeling he had when he arrived at his common room was not there, when he moved to Privet Drive or the Burrow. Harry suspected that it came because of the wards of Hogwarts.
Harry was grinning. He took his portkey out of his pocket, and looked at it. It was an old shoe, which Dumbledore had prepared for him. He willed the old shoe to Dumbledore's desk, and it disappeared from his hand. He smirked. He would love to see Dumbledore's face now, and realized that he could! He willed his air elemental to the Professor's office, and he saw the old shoe on the desk, but the Professor was still sleeping. Pity, there was no reaction from the old man. He willed his elemental back to him, and returned to the grassland in Ireland.
Harry thought about the possibilities of his air elementals. He was able to look into places without his presence, he was able to move things to those places, also without his presence, and he was able to move himself to those places. He wondered if he could bring things with him when he was moving with the help of the air elemental. Harry willed his earth elemental to grow a small tree... the tree grew in front of his eyes. He willed the growth to stop, and he pulled the tree out of the ground. He willed himself to his room Privet Drive with the tree. He arrived in his room with the tree. He looked to the rocks on his bed, and willed them back to the grassland in Ireland and they disappeared.
He moved back to the grassland as well, and he saw the small mound of rocks, which he moved from his bed before. He was amazed.
Now, he was thinking about the other possibility. Was it possible to use the elemental to search for a person? He concentrated himself on the air elemental, but there was no reaction. He switched to other elementals and after ten minutes of concentration, there was no reaction at all. He assumed that it as not possible to use an elemental like that.
That was a pity, because otherwise, he would order his elementals to Voldemort and drop some bombs on his head and that would be the end of the threat. Still, the possibilities were amazing and very interesting.
He had to speak with the headmaster about his new abilities. If he could detect Death Eaters somewhere, the only thing he needed to do was drop grenades on their heads, and the Death Eaters would be no more. He even did not need to be physically present to fight them.
If someone could detect Voldemort, the same surprise for that monster. Harry was very excited, because it meant so much for the fight against the dark. He possessed the ultimate weapon against the Dark side of this war.
Harry was considering his options. Should he continue to experiment with his elements? Should he try to control the weather and the elements of nature? Should he try to summon fires and lightning? Somehow, Harry suspected, this was not only dangerous, but also almost impossible, unless he could gain knowledge of the nature. He could not control the wind here, because he tried. He could only summon the dome surrounding him, and by pressing the air along its edges, he could stop the wind.
He remembered vaguely that the wind was created by difference in air pressure. That means if he were able to figure out how to change air pressure, he would create wind. However, he also needed to study where the air pressure must be manipulated, in order to create wind and control the direction of the wind. In order to control the wind, he needed to create many other centres of air pressure. That was not a good idea, because he realized that when he was able to create the wind, he would not be able to stop it!
Harry was satisfied. Even if he did not want to play with the big things in nature, he was able to look to places where he was not present, he was able to move from place to place, and he was able to move things to any place he knew.
He decided to move to Hogwarts, speak with Dumbledore, and see what he thought.
Harry willed an air element to see if Dumbledore was in his office. The old headmaster was looking in astonishment to an old shoe in the middle of his desk. Aha, it seems that the old man woke up and realized that there was an old shoe on his desk.
Suddenly, Harry thought that it would be much funnier to let his professor wonder. He felt more like going to his room at Privet Drive, and write the professor a letter with the information, also explaining the shoe.
Harry grinned. He concentrated himself on a different air elemental, and moved himself to his room at Privet Drive. Nobody was in his room, and Harry realized that he made a mistake. He suppose to use the elemental to look first if it was possible to move, and then to decide if he could or not. Well, he was lucky.
Harry sat down, took parchment and started to write the letter to Dumbledore.
Dear Professor Dumbledore,
I thank you for the fast response, and your help in creating a Portkey this morning. I used your Portkey, and I arrived in the grasslands of Ireland. There, I was able to experiment with my elements. I learned many things, but I think a personal conversation would be better to tell you about it.
There are three things, which are immensely interesting and useable for the fight against Voldemort and his Death Eaters.
Here follows a general overview what I have discovered.
I am able to move things from my direct environment to any other location of which I know. That is how your Portkey got back on your desk. See it as a proof of concept.
The other ability is that I can look to a location I know, without my presence. I am not able to listen, or smell or feel, but only look.
The last, and the best... I can move my self to that location.
I am hesitant to experiment with the elements of the nature on a grand scale, because I have no idea how to control those elements, if I were able to create one.
That is all in summary. I hope to see you next time in good health,
Yours,
Harry Potter.
Harry looked at Hedwig, who was staring at him. "Sorry my girl, this parchment I will deliver my self," he said.
Harry willed an air elemental to deliver the parchment on Dumbledore's desk, and the parchment disappeared. He concentrated on the elemental still in Dumbledore's office and he saw Professor Dumbledore looking at the parchment on his desk. The old man took his wand, pointed to the parchment and Harry could see him murmuring incarnations. Harry laughed; it was so funny to see the headmaster being mystified for the change.
The Professor stopped incanting, and carefully picked up the parchment and started to read. When Professor Dumbledore was finished reading the parchment, he was smiling. The professor took a fresh piece of parchment and a quill, and started to write a letter. Harry did not want to see what the professor was going to write, because he knew that Dumbledore was now aware of his ability to spy, and did not wanted to be accused of spying. Harry pulled back his air elemental.
An owl flew into his room. What Harry could see, it was a post office owl. He unbound the note and the owl flew away immediately.
Harry opened the note, and he saw it was a note from Hermione.
Dear Harry,
I told my parents about the whole thing. They want to meet you and the girls as soon as possible.
I thought about having you to dinner with us tomorrow evening.
All the love,
Hermione
Harry smiled. He would need Hermione's brainpower very much if he wanted to learn the rest of his elementals. He needed to know how lightning was created in nature, in order to use the same, or to investigate how he could use lighting, if possible.
Harry wrote a short note confirming that he would come. He realized that he did not know where Hermione lived. He took Hedwig, gave the note to her.
"Here girl, can you bring this note to Hermione?" Harry asked his owl.
Hedwig softly nibbled his fingers, and flew through the window, delivering his note to Hermione.
The day was not over yet, but he accomplished a lot. Only now did he start to appreciate his elemental gifts, which gave him extraordinary abilities, which supplied him at least with freedom and some sense of power.
The next thing he wanted to experiment with was mixing the elementals with his magic. He wanted to see if he could use the elementals to empower his magic, as the books had already mentioned. What the books failed to explain was how he would be able to do that.
