He was as exact about his tea as he was about everything else. He let the bag sit in the cup for exactly three minutes, then added one spoonful of sugar and a good dollop of cream. He stirred the resultant concoction three times to the left, back to the right twice, then once more to the left. The ritual soothed him almost as much as the tea.
He sat on his desk, not at it, one leg crossed over the other, the curtains to his office pulled back. The lights were always left off so that, on the off chance someone else got out of bed early, they wouldn't see him, sitting among the shadows he controlled, enjoying the silence, sunrise, and his morning cup.
