Warnings: kissing between men
Disclaimer: don't own it, don't profit from it. This is all for my own personal enjoyment (and hopefully yours as well).
A/N: Beta'd by the wonderous omgcats over at livejournal. Any errors remaining are mine and mine alone. As always, I welcome all reviews (constructive crit too of course), as I'm working hard to become a better writer.

The night air was damp and cool against Kiba's face as he made his way through the twisting streets of Konoha. It had rained earlier in the day, a downpour that had flooded the streets with its ferocity and littered the pathways with puddles. Akamaru paused occasionally to snuffle in some of the more interesting ones but Kiba ignored them, stepping around the small pools simply because he didn't want wet feet for the second time that day.
He was winding his way towards the western wall of the city where the Hyuuga compound was located. It had been three months since the incident in Tea Country, three months in which Neji had continuously brushed him aside. Their interactions were characterized by Kiba flirting and the Hyuuga studiously ignoring him. The repetitive behavior was beginning to annoy Kiba.
Having reached the fence surrounding the compound, Kiba raised a hand to one of the Hyuuga monitoring the exterior. Hinata was one of his closest friends and a result of his comings and goings was that the family guards knew him. The guard nodded his acknowledgement before disappearing.
Kiba propped himself up against the fence to wait, picking at a healing scab on the back of his right hand, positive that Neji would be informed of his presence. He had asked after the man often enough the past few weeks after all.
Any other relationship, any other person, and Kiba would have gotten bored with the game; he didn't enjoy playing games with unwilling participants. He didn't understand what was so different about Neji, why he didn't just walk away when it was apparent that the other wasn't interested.
Of course, Neji wasn't nearly as uncaring as he would obviously like to appear. Every time they met Kiba could smell the arousal spiraling off of him, musky and heady. It did things to him. But despite what his pheromones were saying, everything else about Neji was saying "no."
Reaching down to rub the soft fur on Akamaru's ear, Kiba thought about the thing between him and Neji. He would have been comfortable with a one-night stand if that's what it had been; it was hardly unusual for ninja to hook up after hard or traumatic missions. It was a way to temporarily distance themselves from the realities of life and he'd certainly been a willing participant many times. There had been nothing to indicate that fucking Neji would be different from any other one-night stand.
The patrol must have alerted Neji to Kiba's presence because he sensed the other man walking through the shadows towards him. As he neared, Kiba could see that he'd been training, clothed as he was in a loose tunic and pants, his hair sticking to the sweat beaded on his neck. His mind brought up another image, startlingly similar, of Neji above him, flushed and sweating, though his eyes had been narrowed in arousal then and not in irritation.
"What?" The question was spoken without any preamble, the voice cold and distant.
His mouth twisted into a grin that was cocky and feral, pure Inuzuka. "Want'd to see you, it's been awhile."
"I thought I made it obvious I wasn't interested." It was spoken evenly and resolutely, with very little inflection. Kiba wondered which of them he was trying to convince.
Stepping into the Hyuuga's personal space he shrugged, "Not what your body's telling me."
He was already half hard just thinking about it. Of course, being so close to Neji, his scent wrapping around him, a hard-on was pretty much a given. Considering the flare of arousal his words had provoked, he figured Neji was remembering that night in detail as well. Neji was good with details.
Deciding that Neji needed a reminder of how intense it had been between them, Kiba tugged the taller man down, pressing his lips against harsh line of the Hyuuga's mouth. Neji resisted briefly, denying Kiba access to the warm confines of his mouth before allowing him to deepen the kiss. Kiba took the opportunity offered, leaving a biting kiss on Neji's lower lip before delving inside.
Neji allowed Kiba a few moments of teasing play before he took control of the kiss, his lips firm and punishing as his tongue plundered Kiba's mouth. Kiba felt as though he was being devoured and it was electrifying, startling in its intensity. This was what he had been missing, it was the reason he was still chasing Neji despite Neji's obvious reluctance. Kiba felt a groan slip past his lips as he pressed himself closer to the body in front of him. Neji's hardening erection fit perfectly against his own.
Suddenly Neji was stepping back, forcibly removing himself from Kiba's embrace. Kiba blinked at the sudden loss of contact, trying to fathom why he was backing up and not moving closer. Neji was breathing heavily, as though he'd just finished three hours of intense katas without pause, the last of his hair coming unbound from its tie to further shadow his face. He stared at Kiba for a moment before turning without a word and walking back the way he had come.
"The fuck's your problem?" Kiba snarled, confusion and anger coloring his voice.
Neji didn't bother to answer, his figure disappearing back into the shadows cast by the perimeter wall. Crouching down, Kiba ran a hand through his hair, smoothing down the peaks that Neji's hands had made, trying to calm the arousal still coursing through his bloodstream. Akamaru leaned against his side and Kiba took a second to bury his face in the coarse fur. Frustrated didn't even begin to cover how he felt.
Akamaru made a soft, questioning bark but Kiba just shook his head. "Fuckin' stubborn bastard...."
He stood, adjusting his jacket before turning back towards the center of town, Akamaru at his heels; he needed a drink and some friendly faces.
There were several bars in town that catered strictly to the shinobi crowd and each tended to attract a certain type of ninja. The Konoha Eleven all went to a bar that didn't mind a little roughhousing or loud voices, indeed between Kiba and Naruto and Ino they'd been kicked out of several places before stumbling upon Ukai. It was an older bar, tucked down a dingy little side street, but for all its lack of flash it had cheap beer and a good crowd.
The walk seemed to take forever; it took him nearly the entire way to calm down.
Pulling open the door Kiba was hit with the noise and the heat of the place. He nodded at the waitress as he made his way to a table at the back, sure that she would bring his usual over to him. He was glad to see several of his friends talking loudly and nursing drinks; they were just the sort of distraction he was looking for.
Sitting down between Shikamaru and Sakura, he found he'd joined the group in the middle of one of Ino's rants about her genin team, complaining about their near constant inability to focus.
"Every time I turn around Hisako's whispering to Yukiko about Tetsugaku, and if they're not whispering they're trying to outdo one another. I swear it makes mine and Sakura's rivalry look..."
It was a rant they heard weekly and he tuned her out, turning to talk with Shikamaru instead.
"Anything happening?"
In the process of tapping a cigarette out of the carton Shikamaru took the time to light it before shaking his head. "Apparently Ino's team is driving her crazy. Can't cope with how boy-crazy her two girls are."
Kiba snorted at that, sliding a cigarette from Shikamaru's pack and lighting it, ignoring the cross look he received from his friend.
"Poor Choji, having to put up with it day in and day out."
Shikamaru nodded in agreement before tipping his head back to stare at the ceiling, blowing intricate smoke rings at the dim expanse above.
"Any word on Naruto?"
Shikamaru didn't bother to look away from the ceiling, simply shaking his head in response. Their friend was on another, most likely fruitless, search for Uchiha Sasuke. They'd all gone with him at some point or other over the past eight years, tracking down sure things that ended up being nothing more than hearsay and rumor. But, Naruto being Naruto, he hadn't given up. They'd all lost track of how many times he'd gone, chasing down a promise he'd made a lifetime ago.
His beer arrived and he flirted briefly with the waitress; she was a nice girl, brown eyed and curvy, and she'd caught his eye when he'd been younger. They'd gone on a few dates and had some fun but it had never been anything serious.
Laughing off a particularly absurd compliment, she turned away from him to take Choji's order.
"Shots around please."
He was pretty sure he heard Shikamaru groan. Reaching over he flicked the other man's ponytail.
"Hey man, work hard, play hard, that's my nindo."
Shikamaru leaned forward to stub out his cigarette before pushing himself up out of the chair he'd been reclining in. At Kiba's grin, he slid the pack over to the Inuzuka, watching with a sour expression as he quickly liberated a few. Placing one between his lips, Kiba looked at his friend quizzically.
"I thought you didn't have any shifts at headquarters this week. After the mess in Earth Country."
Shikamaru shrugged, biting back a yawn before replying.
"Things happen. Don't get too stupid tonight."
Kiba brushed off the advice; he was free and clear for a few days, assuming nothing untoward happened. Both he and Shikamaru technically had time off due to the snafu in Earth Country. Not that it had been entirely their fault, sometimes things just got out of control. Even Konoha's most elite were capable of screwing up. Not that he was complaining about some vacation time....
Thankfully the shots arrived just then and he could stop thinking about all the cluster fuck missions he seemed to pull in ANBU lately.
Raising his glass in salute to Choji, he downed it in one gulp, chasing the fiery liquor with a mouthful of beer.
"Who wants to bet that Sakura can drink Ino under the table?"
The resulting uproar proved to be a worthwhile distraction.
