Hermione's mind spun as his lips met hers again and again, turning her world into a dizzying blend of colors and sensations until his lips fell away from hers. He looked into her eyes and lamented, "I'm afraid that I must leave for the night, my dear Miss Granger, before I'm caught." Hermione begged, "Oh, Severus, please. Please stay. Tonight. It's been too long since we last spent a night in each other's arms." "I know, my dear," Severus sighed, "yet even now we both run the risk of being caught. Your esteemed boss at the Ministry of Magic would just love to see this. You, my dear, would probably be brought up on treason charges and sent to Azkaban... or something equally as evil. Heh! As for me, there are orders to eliminate me on sight. No trial - just straight to the /Avada Kedavra/. So I regret to inform you that I must leave." Hermione sighed, clinging to his robes. She nodded, knowing this truth. If Harry or Ron ever discovered that she was with Snape, let alone find out that they've been carrying on a relationship over the past three years, they would immediately put this slender, dark-eyed, raven haired wizard to his death and ask questions later... maybe. They exchanged "I love you's;" with a kiss, he threw on his cloak. Taking a few steps away from her, he apparated. She never knew where he went once he left her, she simply prayed to Merlin that he'd be kept safe until their next meeting.

~The Next Morning...~

"...'Mione?" Poke... poke. "...'Mione!" A frustrated grunt. "'MIONE!!!" Hermione's eyes flew open, her hand instinctively drawing her wand. Once she saw the pale, red-headed boy, she lowered her wand and asked, "What is it, Ron?" After regaining his composure, he managed to say, "I've been sent to remind you that there's a Ministry meeting about some new information on Snape this morning." Hermione completely forgot about the meeting, not that she wanted to go anyway. It may have appeared that she detested this abomination of society, but it didn't take the mirror of Erised to tell her that what she really wanted was him - a life with Severus, one where they were free to be together - not on the run from dementors and other members of the wizarding community. Hermione put on her best business face and told Ron, "I'll be along shortly. Go on ahead with Harry." She flashed him a reassuring smile and he left. It had been a year since Harry defeated Voldemort - "The Three Saviors" the "Daily Prophet" had called them... A year since they were all offered jobs at the Ministry of Magic - with Mad Eye Moody as the new chairman of Wizarding defence and Harry as his right hand man and unofficial co-leader.

It had also been 2 years since Hermione felt like a real human being. She felt as if her entire life was a pretense, nothing more. Her interest in Severus Snape grew from fascination and infatuation during the days of the Order of the Phoenix to a full-blown relationship by the time Harry, Ron, and Hermione reached Hogwarts to begin their 5th year. During Potions classes, they would steal glances at each other, and sometimes meeting in his quarters late at night for a few hours of contentment and passion. Those days seemed eons ago, and how Hermione longed for those days once more.

"Now, as we all know, Hogwarts was destroyed during the final battle. So, what's stopping Snape from using his old Potions dungeon as a safe haven?" asked Mad Eye Moody. "Nothing's stopping him, so why haven't we checked there before?" stated Harry, glaring at the wizarding WANTED posters of the man known as Severus Snape. "Harry," Hermione stated, "You know as well as I do that the building collapsed. So either it collapsed as well or it's buried beneath a ton of crumbled stone. Either way, it's highly unlikely." Ron smirked, "Wouldn't surprise me if the Greasy Git was hiding in a cemetery or something like that." Harry sneered, "He'll be there soon enough, though I think burial is too good for the murderer..." Hermione, letting her emotions get the best of her, shouted, "Don't say such things as that! You don't even know him! You're so blinded by hate and rage that you're acting like a stupid little boy! Both of you!!" Mad Eye looked at her as she ran out of the room, tears streaming down her face. The meeting recessed and he went in search of Hermione.

Hermione sat in her office, sobbing - torn between the two most important things in her life - her job and her lover. She couldn't and wouldn't turn him in, she knew he'd be dead five minutes after the news had spread that he had been captured. She very well couldn't quit her job and not give a reason - someone was bound to get suspicious and try to track her down to find out why. Talk about the proverbial rock and hard place, she thought. A knock came at her office door, she replied, "Piss off, Ron! You too, Harry!" The door cracked open anyway and the well-seasoned voice of Alistor Moody asked, "Well, since you've told them to piss off, what would you have me do?" Shocked, Hermione quickly wiped the tears from her face and replied for him to enter.

"That was quite a show you put on back there," Mad Eye chuckled, trying to begin a conversation. "Yes, I know, sir," Hermione replied. "Is there something the matter, Miss Granger?" he asked. "Oh no, sir," Hermione replied, "I've had a lot on my mind recently and haven't had enough sleep. It's made me quite emotional." Alistor Moody's eye examined her, as if trying to sense something. After a few moments of silence, Alistor proposed, "Hermione, why don't you take some time off? Since you're obviously stressed, take a week's vacation. Relax, and then come back once you've cleared your head." Hermione thanked him and smiled with gratitude. "And don't worry, Miss Granger, we'll capture the dark fiend. Snape will be punished to the fullest extent of the Wizarding Laws. Have no fear, Hermione. Enjoy your vacation!" Once he left and Hermione was certain that he was out of hearing range, she whispered, "That's the very thing I fear. My heart freezes in terror at the very thought." She stood and gathered her things from her office and the meeting room and went back to her flat.
