And, in case you are wondering, Kinder's name is pronounced /kin-derr/. Kind of like kindred.

Unexpected Places

"It's been four whole days!" Garrett growled as he slid to the ground, throwing a stone out into the torrential downpour that continued to rage outside of the cave. The rain plastered his golden hair to his face in a matter of seconds, but he refused to move from his spot near the entrance. Weather be damned, but he would not back down, even from the elements. "How much longer can this possibly go on?"

"Hard to say." Kinder said with a shrug, running his hand down Sabbien's dark coat as they wisely stood further back in their shelter. They had both had enough of the dampness, and neither had any desire to become wet again. Although, Kinder had to admit, Garrett made it look almost appealing as he stared out at the mountainside with a fierceness that rivaled the wild forces of nature. Sabbien, however, obviously found his master's behavior a bit on the ridiculous side as he whinnied in a manner that surely would have been mocking laughter had he been a bit more daemon than animal. "Although, you might want to stay away from the mouth of the cave. He has a habit of sending down lightening bolts directly to the ground when he's angry."

"He?" Garrett didn't like backing down from anyone or anything, but he begrudgingly rose from the ground and made his way back into the cave. He might not like giving in, but he was anything but stupid, and the other man was more familiar with the area than Garrett was. If Kinder said move, then moving was most likely the best course of action. His dying from a bolt of lightening would not save his people. "He who?"

Garrett stopped right in front of Kinder and shook his hair out like a dog, water flying everywhere, and Kinder had to cover his mouth with one hand as he sat down while feigning a sudden coughing fit to hide his laughter. Only a narrowing of pale green eyes told him that the would-be-king knew that he was being laughed at.

When he'd succeeded in clearing his throat Kinder looked back at his companion and answered his earlier question. "Who's he? He is the water kulshedra who's currently causing this storm."

"There's a water kulshedra causing all of this?" Garrett sighed. "I knew that this wasn't a natural storm, but a water kulshedra? Just my luck." He started pacing, wanting desperately to get out of the stifling confines of the dimly lit cave. Now, knowing that there was a someone and not just foul luck behind the storm, he wondered if he ever would. "Might I ask why he's causing such a ruckus?"

"Why do the Greater Powers always start trouble like this?" Kinder answered, looking at Garrett as if he were a simple child. The answer had been obvious to him even before he had heard the complete story for the first time. "He's at war with a fire deity over the affections of a woman."

"A woman?"

"Yes. She's the daughter of a cythraul, supposedly in love with the kulshedra that lives in these mountains, and her father doesn't approve. It's sad really." His dark eyes grew even darker as he looked off into the raging storm, a soft sigh escaping from his lips. "She only wants to be with the one that she loves, to be happy, but her father has locked her away in a fiery pit beneath the mountain where the kulshedra can not hope to reach her. So, he has declared war on the cythraul and fights him by battering the mountains with rains in the hopes of drowning out his rival's fire so that he may reach his beloved."

Garrett just gave a bitter laugh, not nearly as moved by the story as Kinder obviously was. "She's probably hiding from the bastard in the hopes that he'll give up and go bother some other poor lass."

"You don't believe that their's could be a true love?"

"I'm not even sure that true love really exists."

Kinder just looked at Garrett for a moment, his dark eyes searching for the truth in his words. After a moment he seemed to find something in the warrior's face, because when he spoke next his voice was heavy with emotion. "Then that is even sadder than the tale of the cythraul's daughter."

Garrett winced when he heard the sorrow in Kinder's voice, saw the pain in the other daemon's blue gaze, and he sat down beside Kinder with an apologetic smile. "Look, I don't know what I believe, to tell you the truth. I..." He spread his hands wide, confusion clear on his face as he tried to explain something that he himself did not fully understand. "I've never been in love. I've never known that quickening of the heart at the sight of my beloved, never known the all consuming passion that seems to overtake lovers who are connected by hearts and not just by bodies, never known the joy of joining my soul with another. I've never experienced it myself so I can't say for certain if it exists or not, really."

"I've never known love either but I know that it exists." There was a desperate quality to Kinder's voice, his eyes pleading with Garrett as though by convincing the kanarian he could validate his own thoughts. "I have to believe that it exists."

"Maybe it does." Garrett answered with a wistful smile. "Aviann, my best friend, has been in love with my sister Lisbet since almost the day that she was brought into this world. He worships the very ground that her dainty little feet walk upon, would give up his very life for her, and I know with all of my being that his love for her is true." He seemed to become lost in thought for a moment, and Kinder watched him question himself internally, his broad shoulders giving a shrug when he found an answer within himself. "I guess that means that I do believe in true love."

"That's good to hear."

"Is it?" Garrett teased.

"Yes." Kinder said with all seriousness. "A king who does not know love can not love his people as they deserve to be loved. And, if you do not belive in love, it will have a very hard time finding a place in your heart when Fate gives you it's blessing."

"You are a very wise man, Kinder."

His pale grey skin pinked instantly with shame, and Kinder hung his head as he mumbled a response. "No, I am just a fool who talks too much. Forgive me."

Garrett opened his mouth immediately to argue against that statement, having only meant to complement Kinder's insightful views, but looking at the suddenly sullen young man beside him Garrett got the distinct impression that the words stemmed from deeper wounds than he could see and nothing that he said would change the other's mind. He considered saying nothing. Remaining silent and letting the other man believe what he wanted. But, in the end, he couldn't. His people had never been the kind to allow another to suffer in silence, even if there was seemingly nothing that they could do to make it any easier.

Knowing that nothing he said would make much of a difference Garrett instead chose to silently scoot a little closer to Kinder, not stopping until the line of his body brushed against the other man. He let his warmth speak for him, leaning into the other daemon's body, smiling a comforting smile when dark blue eyes turned to him with shock.

Kinder's body had tensed when Garrett had first touched him, but when he saw the kindness in the other's eyes he couldn't help but relax, the darkness of his thoughts moving to the back of his mind as he carefully laid his head on the larger man's shoulder. He sighed contentedly when Garrett's only response was a low chuckle, closing his eyes and saying the only thing that came to mind. "You will make a fine king."
