Chapter Five
Patrick and Cadence are best friends. They are there for each other through everything, or are they?
?Blocked
Walking through the street Cadence kept her hands in her pockets. She didn't want to go home. The more time she spent from there the better. But, now she could never walk back into Patrick's house without thinking about what she had saw. That was even if Patrick ever talked to her again.
Running her fingers through her hair, she turned up another block deciding that she was going to stop and get something to eat. There was no point in wandering the hot streets when she hadn't eaten yet.
Pulling the door open, she walked up to the counter behind the person in front of her. Reaching out and taking a menu, the guy in front of her was obviously startled. He turned around to look at her and broke out into a smile. "Aren't you Patrick's friend? Cadence?" He questioned.
Cadence looked up, her stomach turning at the Patrick reference. "Yeah, I'm his...friend." She trailed off as she looked down at her menu. "Pete right?" She had been gone for a while so she really hadn't gotten a chance to get to know all of the guys in Patrick's band.
"That's me. You've been missing in action for a while, huh?" He smirked as he ordered his lunch. "Let me get yours." He said as he took her menu and putting it down.
"You really don't have to." Cadence said. "I have it." She told him as she took out her wallet.
"No, please join me for lunch?" He questioned giving her a little bit of a pouty face.
Cadence let out a sigh and looked at him. "Okay, sure." She nodded as she told the person at the counter her order and let him pay for it. She wasn't going to fight him about it. After all it meant she had some company while she ate lunch.
"So, we haven't seen you around in a while. Where have you been?" Pete asked as he picked up a french fry and put it in his mouth.
"Oh, I was up in the woods in a cabin with my Uncle..." She trailed off, not wanting to think about it. It wasn't exactly the most pleasant experience. It was worse than she could have ever imagined.
"Oh, did you have fun?" He asked as he took a sip from his soda. "Sometimes being out in the woods is nice."
"Mm, sometimes." She nodded in half agreement. He would never understand even if she came out and told him. Plus, why would she do something as stupid as that? He didn't need to know anything about her. He was just a friend of a...friend.
"So, now that you're back in town what are your plans?" He asked, as he moved his napkin, playing with it.
"I don't know, I didn't really make any plans." She shrugged her shoulders. "Why are you so curious?" She took a sip from her soda and then moved the straw around through the ice to get to the bottom.
"Well are you going to start coming to watch the band play?" He crumpled his napkin up and tossed it to the side.
"I don't know, I think I might jus-" Cadence was interrupted as she heard Pete's name being called. Turning around she saw Patrick and the girl from the kitchen coming towards them. Shaking her head, she looked down at her food and began to pick at it.
"Hey, dude." Pete smiled as they came closer. "Hey Marcy." He got up, leaning over and kissed her cheek.
"Hey." Patrick smiled. "What are you doing here, Cad?" He asked as he playfully hit her shoulder. "You didn't tell me you were home." He smiled as he wrapped his arms around her.
"I just got back and was hungry. I met Pete here." She told him as she half heartedly hugged him back. It hurt more than anything else in the world to do.
"Oh, well, Cad, this is my girlfriend, Marcy. Marcy this is my friend, Cadence." He introduced the two girls.
Cadence's heart almost skipped a beat as he introduced her as his 'friend', not even best friend status anymore. All this had changed in a matter of a month. Or, less than a month. When she left, Patrick didn't even know other girls existed let alone fall in love with them and be having sex with them in his kitchen. His mother's kitchen!
"Hi." Cadence said dryly as she gave sort of a wave. "I better get going. Thanks for lunch, Pete." She leaned over and kissed his cheek gently. Turning to Patrick she gave him a half, less than genuine smile. "Bye."
"Anytime." Peter smiled giving her a nod. "Anytime at all." He told her.
"Where are you going?" Patrick asked as he looked at her, expectantly.
"Home." She told him, as she grabbed her bag and walked out of the restaurant. Even a simple lunch was ruined by him. And, now things were worse than they had seemed an hour earlier. There was no going back from this now.
