Wilted Poppies
by Mina Lightstar
They are fighting, as they often do. Initially, it was over Kurapika's alleged affair with Leorio (/"He's a/ doctor,/ need I remind you?"/) and soon it escalated to accusations about secret meetings with Hisoka. Kuroro thinks those are absurd. He tells Kurapika as much. Besides, he adds, everyone knows Hisoka's energy is devoted entirely to two things: Power, and masturbation. Of course, this suggestion goes over like a lead balloon. The argument progresses, touching on subjects like cooking and cleaning to even poor taste in clothing. Eventually Kurapika insists that they stop, and Kuroro agrees. Their verbal battle is unearthing past differences, and in their irritation they are bringing in topics that are irrelevant. They need time to cool down. They sleep in separate rooms, and the following morning, Kurapika is called away.
Kurapika is a handful. Kuroro knows this, as the two once mixed as well as oil and water. Because he knows this, Kuroro blames himself for what happens next. He neglects the garden while Kurapika is away on business, the one thing the blond insists is maintained because of the variety of flowers they keep. The flowers have sentimental value, Kurapika has said, and when the Kuruta is not around to tend to the garden himself, he asks -- no, insists -- that Kuroro take charge of it.
Kuroro doesn't for that week, because he is still irritated and still fuming. After a couple of days pass, he is no longer so angry. By the end of the week he has a speech prepared, plans for the evening after he apologizes. He knows Kurapika will apologize, too -- that he is simply waiting for Kuroro to make the first move.
When Kuroro remembers the garden, the poppies have wilted. Everything else has survived a week of neglect, though, so he isn't particularly worried. He makes a round, tending to the other flowers, and then goes to take a shower before Kurapika gets home.
He is still in the shower when the Kuruta returns, and knows exactly why the blond storms into the bathroom: He always checks on the flowers first. Kuroro braces himself for scolding, brainstorms ways to make Kurapika forgive his forgetfulness.
He isn't prepared when the blond flushes the toilet, and the scalding hot water is even worse than a lecture.
