"Indirect"
by Mina Lightstar

They are indirect, Leorio affirms one day. He reiterates this conclusion over lunch one afternoon, pauses mid-bite to observe the younger man across from him. He catches Kurapika's gaze and the other cocks his head, inquiring. In his right hand is a pair of chopsticks; they hold a piece of sushi that his mouth was poised to accept. For a moment, Leorio is distracted -- wants to be the sushi.

Then the moment is broken. Something Killua says evokes a yelp from Gon, and the table shakes as the dark-haired boy leans over to swat at his best friend.

"Well, it's true!" the former assassin insists, laughing. "You didn't know it was the girls' section!"

"I'm gonna' get you later!" Gon promises, sitting back once he realizes their table has become the topic of conversation.

"Well," Kurapika says, appeasing, "at least you managed to get away before anything went terribly wrong."

"But they did go wrong!" Killua snorts. His spoon clatters against his plate of ice cream as he doubles over and snickers some more.

"KILLUA!"

"But not terribly wrong," the Kuruta points out. The blond smiles at them younger boys, but Leorio knows that the brief flicker of a gaze he receives is meant just for him.

"Hey, Gon, are you going to eat that sausage?" Killua pipes up, and then plucks it up with his chopsticks.

"You have your own!" Gon snaps, catching Killua's wrist and putting up a fight.

"You're disturbing the peace," Leorio chides them. He leans back and sips his daiquiri. Sitting in this restaurant, surrounding by those closest to him, Leorio feels like the richest man alive.

The four of them are friends, close friends with an unbreakable bond. However, within this bond, two others have formed -- these ones even deeper. It is not something they have ever discussed, but neither is it something they all avoid. Simply put, it just is. Actualities have never been clearly defined, and none of them seem particularly inclined to define them. It is a natural division: Gon-and-Killua, Leorio-and-Kurapika. None of them wish to inquire about or intrude upon something that seems to be going so well.

Leorio and Kurapika do not have what Gon and Killua have. In fact, they are just the opposite. Where as Gon and Killua are rowdy, casual, inseparable, and open/, Leorio and Kurapika are quiet, subtle, realistic, and patient. It is simply unthinkable for Gon and Killua to be separated for any great length of time, but for Leorio and Kurapika it is a frequent occurrence. But they do not think "separation;" they think, "Wait for me."/

Leorio often watches Gon and Killua exchange affection in public. He smiles when Killua tugs on Gon's cheeks, when Gon ruffles Killua's fluffy hair, when they argue over who gets to sleep on which side of the bed. It warms his heart when he catches the two of them playing games, trying to guess a fact about the other -- hobbies, favorite color, favorite kind of music. It delights him that he knows Kurapika's (reading, blue, anything Senritsu plays) and that the information came to him naturally. He doesn't think he and Kurapika have the same intensity as Gon and Killua, though; they are simply too subtle about things. Besides, Leorio is of the opinion that Kurapika can do more with a warm expression than he can by leaping into Leorio's arms in the middle of a crowded street.

Leorio is shaken from his thoughts when the blond sets his chopsticks down. He lifts his drink (it is some kind of mixed beverage: Pineapple and coconut) and takes a sip. Leorio wants to be the bottle between those lips, wants to taste that tongue. He wants to stand, toss the table aside and take the bottle's place -- wants to pull Kurapika against him so no one in the restaurant will have any doubts what is between them.

But he doesn't, of course. Instead he watches pink lips release the bottle, follows a pink tongue with his eyes as it licks away traces of the drink, accepts the offer when Kurapika holds out the bottle and asks, "Want to try?"

And while Gon and Killua are wrestling for Gon's ice cream, Leorio savors the indirect kiss.
