It was well into the evening before Kurapika, Leorio, and Gon were permitted to head on upstairs to their borrowed room and get ready for bed. Kurapika, for one, was glad to go -- and from the looks of things, Gon and Leorio weren't about to complain, either. The day had been full of household and outdoor chores, and those tasks had been completed with limbs burdened by weights used for training.
"Is tomorrow going to be worse?" Gon wondered. His movements were slower like the rest of theirs, but aside from an aura of fatigue, he didn't look horrible. Kurapika had been privately worried about the younger Hunter, as he had been injured during the Hunter exam. It didn't matter that Gon was resilient; the work must have been more difficult with a broken arm. Kurapika hoped it would be fully healed soon.
"I'm hoping tomorrow will be easier," Leorio put in. He raised a hand to rake his fingers through his hair, and Kurapika noticed that the limb quivered slightly. The aspiring doctor was the strongest of the three of them, and now even he was showing signs of exhaustion. "It's training, after all. You'd think we'd be getting better."
Kurapika's lower back was sore. Cleaning out the all of the cupboards, top and bottom, had involved being bent over for extended periods of time. He couldn't wait to take the weights off.
They reached the second floor after a trip that seemed to have taken an eternity. Once they found the extra bedroom, they filed in one after the other, and Kurapika, going in last, somehow managed to shut the door.
"Uwaaaa!" Gon exclaimed with a sudden burst of energy. The outburst made Kurapika start, thinking something was amiss, but he relaxed when he saw that Gon was simply stretching. How the younger Hunter had managed to dig up the strength to do so was beyond him, and Kurapika found himself smiling.
"Which bed do you want?" It didn't matter to him, but he asked in case his friends had any specific preference tonight.
"I want that one." Gon pointed to the furthest. He didn't give any reason, because there wasn't any, and neither Leorio nor Kurapika questioned it. Leorio selected the bed closest to the door ("So I won't trip over either of you,") which left Kurapika in the middle.
"Time for these to come off," Leorio pronounced, suiting his words by undoing the straps and taking off the weights. Gon and Kurapika followed suit as soon as they'd dragged their belongings to their own beds.
"You should go to sleep right away," Leorio cautioned, building a small pile of gear near the end of his bed.
"I am!" Gon said. "I wanna' be ready for tomorrow," he added emphatically. "Killua's waiting up there."
Kurapika smiled again, because Gon's determination was always something he found endearing, and finished taking off the gear he'd worn all day.
He should have considered it, really. The weights had been heavy, so it had required more effort on his part to move around like he normally did. With the weights gone, obviously things would be back to normal. But he wasn't thinking, and stepped forward with the extra burst of strength he'd grown accustomed to using, and ended up stubbing his little toe on the bedpost much harder than he might have otherwise.
When the initial, almost-blinding pain faded, he was on the mattress, hands clenching bunches of the blankets. He tried wiggling the toe and decided that wouldn't be a good idea for at least several minutes. It was when the pain had dulled to an insistent throbbing that he realized Gon and Leorio were staring at him, wide-eyed and mouths agape.
"...What?" he asked after a few moments of suffering their shocked expressions. Then he remembered being angry, and shouting, and.... He gasped, one hand coming up like he was about to cover his mouth. "Gon, I'm sorry." The apology was out of his mouth automatically, because the fact that he considered Gon his equal and friend didn't mean anything; he'd been told time and time again that such language had no place around any minors. "I didn't mean to be vulgar."
Gon shook his head, and his stunned expression vanished. "I-it's okay. That looked like it really hurt."
Kurapika mumbled another apology, and then noticed that Leorio was still staring at him incredulously. "What?"
"Nothing, nothing," the older boy assured him, hands raised in surrender. "I just... didn't even think you knew that word."
