"Patrick, look at me." Marcy's voice rang in his ears as he tried to focus on his girlfriend. "What the hell are you thinking about?"
Patrick shook his head as he shooed her hand away from his lap. He really wasn't in the mood to do anything. He didn't want her touching him right now. "Just don't." He told her as he moved away on the couch a little bit. He was starting to just wish she would go home and leave him alone. "Nothing." He answered half heartedly.
"You have to be thinking about something and I know it's not about me." She pointed her finger at him as she moved away from him on the couch.
"I'm just worried about a friend alright? Not everything has to be about you, you're the only person in this world. You don't have to have all of the attention!" He shouted at her as he stood up. He was tired of her attitude. If it wasn't about her, it wasn't right.
"A friend?" She shot back at him as she stood up, reaching his height. "You mean Cadence right? Because she's all you ever fucking think about. News flash, Patrick, you're in a relationship with me and not her. She didn't want you." She shot at him as she crossed her arms across her chest.
"Shut up! You do not know that!" His eyes immediately went wide as he realized what he had said to her. "She is my friend, Marcy, nothing more and she is in a bad way. I need to help her, so don't tell me what or who I can think about!" He yelled at her.
"I don't know that? You want her, don't you? You fucking asshole!" She screamed at him as she pushed him away from her. "You are such an asshole. Fine, Patrick, if you want her then go get her. I can do so much better than you, anyway." She grabbed her jacket from the banister and walked out of the house.
Patrick cringed as she slammed the door behind her. The sound increased his heart beat and rang in his ears. Sighing, he fell back against the couch and put a hand over his face. He knew he should be more upset about the fact that his girlfriend just broke up with him, but all he could think about was the fact that Pete was hurting Cadence and there was really nothing he could do to help her.
She wouldn't believe anything that he told her just because she was probably the one filling Pete's head with all of those things that he had shot at him. She probably thought he didn't care and it explained how and why she blew him off that day that he made an attempt to hang out with her.
Groaning, he pulled himself from the couch and grabbed his phone as he dialed Cadence's number. He sat back and waited for an answer, he wasn't sure if she would answer, because she knew his number and she might be avoiding him at all and any costs.
"Come on, Cadence." He groaned to himself. "Answer the damn phone."
The other end of the phone rang and rang until finally Cadence's recording came on and Patrick almost vomited at Cadence's voice on the other end saying how she couldn't answer the phone because she was out with "her baby, Petey." And how that was probably the reason she didn't answer the phone.
Patrick hit the end button and tossed the phone to the side as he leaned his head against the couch. He had to think of something and fast. But, what? He had so many thoughts cross his mind.
"What are you doing, man? Think!" He scolded himself as he sat up and rested his head in his hands.
"Are you really talking to yourself?"
Patrick looked up to see his mother standing there. Laughing, he nodded. "Yeah, mom. I am. Me, myself and I, we're all pretty stupid." He sighed as he pushed his long hair out of his face.
"What happened baby? Why are the three of you stupid?" She sat down next to her son.
"Because Cadence is dating Pete and I don't want her to be dating Pete, he's no good for her and Marcy broke up with me, and I feel bad because I don't really care all that much and..." He sighed. "Sorry."
"It's okay, baby. Please breathe." She told him as she rubbed his back. "Now, more slowly. Marcy broke up with you?"
"Because she thinks all I care about is Cadence, but Cadence is my best friend and Pete's no good for her, I have to protect her." His mother knew all about the situations of Cadence's home life and although they could never do anything to make it better, she was always there for her.
"I know, baby, but isn't Pete your friend? Why isn't he good for her? Maybe she'll realize that she's worth more than what her Uncle gives her. Someone who loves her..."
"He doesn't love her!" Patrick snapped as he moved away from his mother. He sighed giving her an apologetic look. "He just wants to use her to play around with for a little while and then he's going to drop her for someone prettier or skinnier..." The thought alone was killing his heart. He should have been around more, he should have protected her from Pete.
"And you know for a fact that Pete doesn't love her? And, that he wants to hurt her?" His mother tried to reason with him.
"Yes, Ma. I do!" He shook her off. "I don't want to talk about this." He said as he turned out of the room and walked up the stairs. The only sound left to be heard was the sound of his bedroom door slamming and then locking. No one understood what he was going through, he thought his mother of all people would get what he was feeling about the Cadence situation.
Grunting he threw himself on the bed and stuffed his head under the pillow. He just wanted to forget this day ever existed.
