He pulled around and parked in the driveway in front of the attached single car garage. I watched the expression on his face wondering just what the hell it meant. Finally he opened the car door and got out. I didn’t wait for him to come around and open my door. I got out and quickly went around to him.
He was still staring at the house so I slipped my hand in his and we slowly walked around to the front door. I watched as he took out a set of keys. He took a deep breath, inserted the correct key and opened the door. The door swung open and Gerard stepped back to let me enter first.
I looked at him and smiled. Hell, what was I getting myself into this time? Taking a deep breath I stepped into the spacious foyer. I looked back to see him looking down at the keys in his hand. He seemed to be so lost in thought I wasn’t sure what to do. Finally he walked in slowly and closed the door behind him.
To my left was the L-shaped living and dining room. I was surprised to see that some of the furniture had been left behind. There was a sofa and piano in my line of sight and a wood-burning fireplace. Looking to my right I also saw that there was an organ in the room. “Why did she leave some of the stuff in the house?” I asked.
He shrugged, “I don’t know. Guess she was tired of the memories.” He answered. I watched as he slowly made his way to the organ. “Mom used to pay this all the time. Me and Mikey would stand and watch her. She’s pretty musical really. Not as much as her mom but still good.”
Her mom, I knew, was Gerard’s beloved Grandma Elena. Elena, the woman who had inspired Gerard to use the talents he had been born with. I stood in the center of the room and looked around. There was a door that lead into what I could see was the kitchen. I slowly walked towards it. Gerard stayed behind still looking at the organ, obviously lost in memories.
The kitchen was spacious and very nice. It had lots of cabinets and a large, long window above the sink to let in the sunshine. I walked through the room slowly then continued on into the recreation room. The two sliding glass doors that lead out to the patio let in a great deal of sunlight. That was good considering the walls were covered in wood paneling which without the sunlight would have made the room seem dark and uninviting. I noticed there were steps leading to the ground floor but I decided to look at the rest of the rooms on the first floor before venturing down. As I returned to the living room I noticed Gerard was on his cell phone. He looked up at me when I entered and it was obvious that he didn’t want me listening to his conversation. I motioned that I was gonna look around the rest of the house. He gave me a nod.
There were three bedrooms which I did a quick walk-thru. Same with the full bath. This was really a nice house. I started back towards the stairs I had seen earlier intent on looking over the ground floor. As I walked past Gerard I heard him mutter, “Shit Ray, just shut the fuck up.” His eyes followed me as I walked through.
The ground floor wasn’t nearly as nice as the first floor. Maybe it was just because it was darker but for some reason it felt almost sinister. Goosebumps had appeared on my arms when I hit the bottom step. What the fuck? A few times in my life I had actually felt a presence I would consider evil. Once had been touring a house where a famous murder had taken place. I remembered the day and how I had, honest to God, felt a dark presence. Let’s just say I hadn’t stayed for the whole tour. Now walking slowly down the dark hall I was feeling something that felt ten times worse. I considered going back upstairs and waiting for Gerard but something made he continue on my path. I glanced at the Kitchenette and the room I guessed was a dining area across from it. Beyond that was another hall. I didn’t want to go that way. Next down the hall was a laundry room. I walked through it quickly and into another larger room with a wood-burning stove. It seemed, well hell, it seemed less evil. I noticed another room, which I guessed, had been used as a study. Walking out of that room I entered another large room. Shit, this house had a lot of rooms and sorry to say the more I walked through the creeper it became. There was only one room left and I walked towards it. As my feet reached the entrance I felt an icy chill run down my spine. Holy fuck, it was as if the room had suddenly dropped twenty degrees. My feet suddenly had a mind of their own and took a few steps forward. My brain was screaming to stop. I closed my eyes willing myself to get a grip. This was just a room. I reopened my eyes and looked around. There were two small windows that let in just a small amount of light. The wood paneling made the room so dark. Yeah, I tried to convince myself that the only reason I had this weird feeling about the room was because it was so dark. Shit, it’s bad when you can’t convince yourself of something. I didn’t want anything to do with this room. Slowly I backed out and bumped into a body. I’ve never screamed so loud.
Gerard threw his arms around me and pulled me to his chest. His hot breath was in my ear. “Welcome to my room.” He whispered.
