I violently twisted around in his arms to face him. “What the fuck happened in this room?” I asked grabbing his face in my hands and locking eyes.
He was shocked by my actions. He blinked and answered slowly, “It’s just a fucking room.”
I shook my head, “No, it’s not just a fucking room. Tell me damn it. What happened in this room?” My voice shook.
He tried to move back from me but I held tight. “Let me go.”
I refused, “Tell me.” I screamed.
His hands came up and he pushed me away from him. He pushed so hard that I stumbled backwards but caught myself before I fell. He turned and walked away. I stood still shaking with anger and something else. A feeling I couldn’t put words to. I closed my eyes and suddenly it felt like the room was closing in on me. I sank to my knees.
“Fuck” I heard him say as he walked back into the room and lifted me in his arms. I kept my eyes shut tight as he carried me back upstairs. When he gently deposited me on the sofa he spoke again. “Laura, open your eyes. Tell me what the fuck was that all about?”
I took several deep breaths then opened my eyes. What the fuck had just happened? He was staring at me waiting for an answer. I didn’t have one.
“Tell me. What happened down there?” he asked again this time with more emotion. He was beginning to sound as scared as I had felt.
“I don’t know.” I whispered. “I walked in that room and I felt something.”
He walked across the room and took a seat on the piano bench. “I should never have brought you here. Come on, I’m taking you to a hotel.” He stood and walked back over to me.
I looked up at him. “We’re gonna stay at a hotel?”
“I’ll get you a room. I’m staying here.” He put out his hand to me.
My anger resurfaced. “Fuck you. If you stay then I stay.”
His hand dropped, “Laura, please don’t fight me on this. I was fucking stupid to bring you here. I don’t want you here.” He added.
“I’m not gonna leave you here alone.”
“Yeah, you are.” He reached out and grabbed my arm roughly pulling me off the sofa.
I struck out blindly at him. My hand connected with his cheek and he shoved me back. I fell hitting the glass top coffee table. My body rolled and hit the floor. “Stupid bitch, get up.” He screamed.
I lay on the floor curled with my knees to my chest. Hot tears ran down my face. Suddenly he was beside me kneeling. “Laura, I’m sorry. Fuck, I’m sorry.” He bent down next to my face. “Are you hurt? Did I hurt you?”
I moved on to my back and looked at him. “We need to get out of this house.” I whispered.
He sat down next to me. “I can’t, I just can’t.” Tears filled his eyes. We stayed like we were several minutes until I slowly got up. Wincing from the pain in my side where I had hit the table I stood. “I have no fucking idea what just happened to us but know this, I won’t let you stay in this house alone. If you stay here, I will stay here.”
He stood, “Laura, I swear to God I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just wanted to make you get out. I need you to get out.”
“Why did you bring me here? Why did you bring me to this house?”
He looked down unable to meet my eyes, “I just…I didn’t want to be alone when..”
“When? When what?”
The knock on the door made us both jump. Gerard moved to the window trying to see if there was a car parked at the curb. “Who the fuck is here?” he was upset beyond words.
The knocking was growing louder. Gerard stood rooted to his spot by the window. I couldn’t take it I walked to the door and threw it open. Ray’s face was distorted with anger. “What the fuck is going on? Where is Gerard?” He pushed me out of the way and strode into the living room.
Gerard was still standing at the window looking out. He hadn’t even turned when he heard Ray’s voice.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” He yelled at Gerard.
Gerard didn’t turn to face him. He just stared out the window. “You fucking asshole, look at me.” Ray demanded.
Still no movement from Gerard. Ray shot across the room and pulled him away from the window. Gerard stood staring at him, his face blank.
I stood watching the scene in stunned silence. Ray’s angry voice continued, “You bought this fucking house, didn’t you? Shit, I knew it. Why, Gerard? Why?”
Gerard stood looking at him blankly. God, I was afraid his mind had snapped. There was no life in his eyes. “Ray, leave him alone.” I screamed.
Ray never acknowledged my presence. He continued to speak to Gerard. “What the hell do you think this proves? Nothing, that’s what. Not a fucking thing. You think you can pay for your sins by doing this?”
“No” Gerard ground out. “No.”
“Get the fuck out of here.” Ray said turning to me.
I was shocked by his words. I had no fucking idea what was going on but I knew there was no way in hell I would walk out of this house without Gerard. “No.” I said simply.
He started to walk towards me but Gerard’s words stopped him. “Don’t touch her. Don’t fucking touch her.”
I took a step back and watched as Ray turned back to him. “Gerard you know she shouldn’t be here.” Some of his anger seemed to fade, “None of us should be here.”
“I know” Gerard said softly. “Laura and I are leaving. There is noting for me here. No redemption, nothing.”
Ray’s whole posture seemed to relax. “Then lets get the fuck out of here.”
Gerard walked to me. He put his arm around me and moved me to the door. I was still reeling from the scene I had just witnessed. I allowed him to lead me out the door and into the fading light. Ray followed us out.
“Laura, please wait for me in the car.” Gerard said softly.
I shook my head. Even outside I was afraid to leave his side.
“Please, I promise I’ll be right there.” He leaned over and kissed my lips lightly.
I looked at Ray and saw that he was looking off into the distance. I took one final look at Gerard and began to walk to the car.
“Laura” Ray’s voice halted my movement. “I’m sorry.”
I turned to look at him. I had nothing to say. What could I say? I reached the car and got in. My nerves were raw. Several minutes went by and I sat twisting my hands. Finally I saw Ray’s car, which was parked in front of the house drive away. I waited for Gerard. When he didn’t appear after several minutes I got out and ran back to the house. The front door was still standing open. I took the steps two at a time and ran inside.
“Gerard” I screamed his name. The room was empty. Fear clutched at my heart. “Gerard” I screamed again running room to room. He wasn’t on the main floor. My heart was in my throat as I ran for the steps. I didn’t bother looking at any of the rooms I passed. I went directly to his old bedroom. It was there I found him.
