During the frigid desert nights, he keeps her warm by brewing her tea and his coffee over the flame of his gloved fingertips.
The others soon come running into their tent, bringing their chipped mugs and smuggled smokes, begging him for a little relief from the cold, bribing them with food, stolen liquor for him and spare bullets for her, and huddle around the young major to shield the glow.
Later, when the fiery dawn breaks through the desert sky, she gently wakes him by running her hands across his skin, warming him with the heat of her naked fingertips.
