I had been aimlessly walking around the streets for God knows how long now. It had started to lightly rain a while ago; the water had seeped into my clothes making my whole body numb. The duffel bag seemed to have gained ten pounds with the weight of the water that had soaked into it.

Several times I had thought about going back to Pete’s house. Maybe he could look past this time and tomorrow morning when we woke up everything would be back to the way it always was. Though this time seemed different, I’d never seen Pete that upset at me before.

I’d also thought about going to my parents’ house. I decided against it though, they didn’t deserve to put up with my bullshit either. And maybe because they lived too far away…

So here I was, no where to go, walking the streets of an almost deserted city.

The tears had stopped a few blocks back, though you couldn’t tell with the rain. The echo of my heartbeat was back booming throughout my head and now, to add to the list of my troubles, my heart ached.

People passing by would give me odd looks, I guess I must have looked slightly out of place walking in the middle of the road. I figured I had more of a chance of getting hit by a car if I walked on the road rather than the sidewalk.

“Excuse me, miss?” A voice asked from somewhere behind me. I didn’t bother looking around to see who the voice belonged to.

“Miss?” The voice persisted.

I still didn’t bother to look around, I thought that maybe if I just ignored the person they would give up and leave me alone. But shit, since when did things ever work out my way?

A moment later two unknown hands clamped down on my shoulders, bringing my steady walking to a halt. I didn’t scream, or even try to get away; I didn’t have the energy for anything anymore. Except to just keep on walking.

A pair of hazel eyes met with mine a moment later; the eyes held a hint of concern, but mainly just curiosity and humour. What they found funny about this situation was beyond me.

“Miss, you’re walking in the middle of the road,” the man’s voice dripped with humour.

“Thank you, Captain Obvious,” I smiled sarcastically at him, batting my eyelashes to emphasise my sarcasm.

We stood still for a few moments, his hands still clamped onto my shoulders, eyes boring into mine.

The man seemed to remember that we were standing in the middle of the road; he latched his hand onto my wrist and pulled me to the safety of the sidewalk. His hands felt nothing like Pete’s and I hated it.

“Are you okay?” He asked sceptically, the humour had left his voice and been replaced with concern.

I’m not sure whether it was because the man was concerned for me, a complete stranger, or whether the drugs hadn’t worn off yet but I began to cry. And not just a few tears, I probably could have saved a drought with the amount of tears that flooded from my eyes.

The duffel bag that I had been holding onto so dearly dropped to the ground, being forgotten the moment in gracelessly hit the ground.

The stranger pulled me into his chest and wrapped his arms tightly around me. I took note of how different and unsafe I felt when he hugged me as a pose to Pete, who made me feel safe by just looking in to my eyes.

My body was shaking even more now. It could have been due to my newfound insecurity, the cold, or the fact that I was uncontrollably sobbing into an unknown man’s chest.

“I’m sorry,” I sobbed, “I’m not crazy. It’s just…actually yeah, I think I’m slightly crazy.”

The man nodded and chuckled a little, “well you kind of looked crazy walking in the middle of the road.”

Giving a loud sigh, I detangled myself from his arms and stared at the ground in embarrassment. My sobs turning into nothing more than some sniffing and a few stray tears.

“Can I ask why you were walking on the road?” He hesitantly asked.

As I opened my mouth to answer, a car tore down the street and screeched to a halt a few feet away from us. I watched in curiosity as the car reversed until it was level with the man and I.

I felt a chill run down my spine as I noticed it was Pete’s car. If the man hadn’t of pulled me to the sidewalk, I would have been dead for sure. The irony of the situation almost made me laugh, but mostly it just made me sick.

Pete jumped out of the car and hastily walked towards me. Before he even got within two feet of me, the man, who I had almost forgotten about, stepped in front of me. Pete sent me a confused look.

“Can I help you, buddy?” The man’s voice was rough and intimidating but Pete stood his ground.

Shit, did this guy think he was a knight in shinning amour?

“No,” anger flashed through Pete’s eyes before he looked past the man to me, “Bailee, get in the car baby.”

Just the sound of Pete’s voice seemed to calm me.

I nodded silently at Pete’s request and went to walk to the car but a hand clamping around my wrist stopped me. Jesus, this guy was a joke.

“Let go of her,” Pete snarled, taking a step closer to the man.

The man sent a questioning glance in my direction and turned back to Pete shaking his head. I tried to get out of his grip but it only made the man tighten his grasp on me.

“I’m not letting you go to get beat up by some bastard,” the man addressed me but was looking in Pete’s direction.

The unsafe feeling started taking over my senses. A nervous sweat was beginning to form on my forehead and my hands were getting clammy. I wasn’t sure this night could get any worse, but I had learnt to never assume things.

“Who the fuck are you?” Pete hissed, eying the man’s hand wrapped tightly around my wrist. He clearly didn’t like the fact that another man was touching me. I suppose he’d always been like that, and usually things didn’t end so well when it happened.

“Who are you?” The man shot back, the confidence he must have been feeling was clearly evident in his voice.

“Her boyfriend,” came Pete’s simple reply, and although it was simple it was still venomous.

The man’s grip loosened a bit and I wasted no time in yanking my arm free. I took a few steps back, making sure I was out of reach of the man.

Turning around to face me, the man sent me another questioning glance.

“You don’t have to go back to him.”

Shit, I almost starting laughing. Why the hell wouldn’t I want to go back to Pete? I shook my head at the man, a small smile spreading across my lips.

“I want to go back.”

The man looked at me, confusion written all over his face. He glanced over at Pete who glared angrily and then turned back to me. Shaking his head and shrugging his shoulders, the man seemed to give up and walked away like nothing had ever happened.

Pete wasted no time in rushing towards me and wrapping his arms protectively around me. The feeling of being safe washed over my body and I tightly wrapped my arms around Pete’s torso. Burying my head into his chest, I breathed in his sent and sighed happily.

“Are you okay?” Pete asked, pulling me to arms length before checking me up and down to make sure.

I nodded, smiling lovingly up at Pete.

“You’re soaked,” he pointed out, “baby, I’m so sorry.”

Looking up to Pete, I saw the guilty expression plastered across his face. And as grateful as I was that he had come to find me, I was confused beyond belief. I mean, he did kick me out after all.

Pete must have read my confused look because he shook his head before leaning down to kiss my lips sweetly.

“I couldn’t leave you out here,” he whispered into my lips.

“Why?”

Shit, I just couldn’t seem to understand it. If I were in Pete’s place I would have kicked me out a long time ago. And more than likely forgotten that I was ever apart of his life.

He shrugged, “I love you.”
