-Chapter 1: Live in the Past, Learn from the Present
-Somewhere in Station Square
It was a cold night. The wind stood still, almost as if in waiting. The moon hung over the world below like a great white guardian, or an evil eye.
The streets of the city were dark and ominous. Dark towers of steel rose into the sky like fingers that grasped at the night above. A cool mist had settled along the streets, bathing the area in a spooky haze. It was a night you dare not go outside, for you would surely find something scary, or deadly. Yet even then, he knew they’d be out. The slime. The vermin. The filth.
He knew them all. He saw what they truly were in his own eyes. Those eyes that were red like the very fires of the underworld. Eyes that had been just as dark as theirs. He saw the robbers, murderers, villains, purse snatchers. He saw them all, just by looking in their eyes for that little tint. A tint of evil, of hatred, jealousy, greed, any sin that they had he could see. He didn’t enjoy it, but he had to do it.
His name was Shadow. He was a hedgehog Mobian. But not just any hedgehog, oh no. He was much more. He was the Ultimate Lifeform. A being with chaos powers beyond most other being in the world. Even without a chaos emerald in his hand, he had great and terrible power. The power to destroy a person’s life if needed. These days, he kept it in check, but there had been a time when it had almost caused him to do something stupid, and evil. He had almost destroyed the world.
Of course, he didn’t remember this. His memories had been locked whilst he recovered from his deadly fall through space to the planet below. The fact that he had been in Super Shadow form when he went through the atmosphere was all that prevented his death. The crash had all but killed him, but his amazing body regenerated the damage quickly enough to save him.
But not from Eggman. Dr. Eggman had found him, had taken his data and a sample of his blood, and kept him in a storage area below his base. The crash and the stasis had wiped out his mind. Now he wept at night for the lose of someone he did not know.
Or had known anyway. He had been released from the stasis by Rouge the Bat, master treasure hunter and expert thief. Along with the rebellious robot Omega, they had trashed Eggman’s robots in search of the evil genius scientist. Finally, they had found him, only to realize it was not in fact the doctor, but one of his own creations.
-One week ago: Final Fortress Lab 187
He lay there. The most sophisticated machine ever built was now nothing but a scrap heap. Metal Sonic, or Metal as he preferred himself to be called now, lay on the workbench in Lab 187 of the Final Fortress battle ship. Broken in ways he couldn’t list. He lay there. Defeated.
Nearby, Shadow and a large, well built, red and yellow robot named E-123 Omega were typing at a computer furiously. Shadow’s eyes burned with determination, and he shifted his weight often in anticipation. Omega just stood there as always, only slightly interested. Only Shadow’s help in getting his revenge on Dr. Eggman was making him stay here and help Shadow back.
A long dark blue cord led from the computer and into the neck joint between Metal’s head and torso. On the screen, a readout of Metal Sonic’s inner workings displayed all his basic body functions, most of which were inactive at the moment.
“Revert all concentration to the main optic recorder,” said Omega. Instructing Shadow on how to hack an Eggman robot was proving to be a lot easier than he originally calculated. Shadow was intelligent, for an organic.
“Ok, I think we’ve almost got his memory core open to us,” said Shadow a moment later. His fingers flew across the keyboard rapidly. Finally, he found a list of memory logs and optic recordings inside Metal’s memory core.
“Now, search for what you desire,” said Omega, “I am now going to start decommissioning this station.”
“Save the power core for last if you will. I may be here a while,” said Shadow, not looking back to Omega.
Omega took a long look at Shadow, in a state of almost admiration. “Very well then,” he said, as he turned to leave.
“Thank you Omega,” Shadow added.
Omega looked back for a second, then turned and walked on without saying anything.
About two hours of looking at log files, Shadow found what he was looking for.
Data File 1223458
Subject: Shadow the Hedgehog
A.K.A.: Shadow, Ultimate Life Form, Faker (for reasons he did not know, Shadow chuckled to himself at that.)
Most of the data after that consisted of Shadow’s physical specs, including data on himself he never knew.
Finally, he found info on his past. Rouge had refused to tell him the entirety of the events preceding their meeting, but now he had what he needed.
-Present: Station Square
He knew now. Though the memories did not return with the information, he knew. And he still did not know why.
What had happened that was so terrible that he would do such a thing. Metal Sonic’s data about his past was little more than random newspaper clippings. Metal had been interested in his physical and Chaotic abilities, and apparently his past was little more than interesting data.
But that didn’t change anything. He knew now. He had been evil. He had done terrible things. And though he had saved the world that wasn’t enough.
“I’m sorry,” he said aloud, to know one in particular.
With that, Shadow jumped from the building and landed unnaturally gracefully on the ground below. Slowly, he walked on, into the night as black as himself.
