Footsteps stomped out of the building at a rapid pace, the thin person not coming in contact with anyone has they opened the door into the warm city air. Both hands were clasped tightly around the heavy keyboard, trudging a good ways across the parking lot with it. The female popped the trunk and shoved the enormous thing inside, slamming the lid closed as soon as it was in.

Danielle was never one to get road rage, but she couldn’t help to be as angry with Ryan as she walked out on the band that was missing its own vocalist. The first and most annoying reason was for getting that song in her head. The speedy tempo pulsed through her head, causing her to tap her fingers on the wheel as she sat in traffic. She couldn’t wait to get home. The other reasons were all branched off of the events that had taken place the night before.

“’There’s a very special place in my heart for you, Danielle.’ Pfft.” The keyboardist shook her head as she pulled the car ahead as far as the traffic would allow her to.

After an hour and a half, she was home, and had convinced herself that she had never had feelings for Ryan and she would never so much as look at him again. The song was still buzzing inside her head as she opened the door and dropped the keyboard inside. It only gave her an excuse to still think about him and take out her rage on something.

I’ll never mean as much to him as his precious girlfriend does, she thought menacingly. And he thinks he can just make it up to me after what he led me to believe. That everything’s going to be okay. Well it’s not!

A shaky sigh escaped her lips as she made her way over to the couch, intending to fall into it and just lay there for a while. Instead, her hip bumped onto the side of the end table, knocking a vase full of flowers over. The sound of the glass shattering made her jump while she was holding onto her hip at the stinging pain. A bruise would surely form, matching the one on her groin. She groaned from frustration before collapsing onto the couch with her hands over her face.

She closed her eyes and breathed in and out slowly, overtaken by a light sleep.

Boys will be boys…

Some time later, there was a quick knock at the door. Danielle was up off the couch straight away. Before she could even get to the door, a worried and hesitant voice called to her. “Danielle! Danielle, please open up. It’s Brendon. I really think we should talk.” The door knob clattered jerkily before she could reach it and open it.

That magical silence came right on cue. The one where Brendon realized that Danielle may have needed him as much as he was thinking, and the one where Danielle realized that Brendon was as bothered by the situation as he let show. Brendon frowned at the evident signs that she had been crying. Danielle just stood there, almost confused. Neither of them knew exactly what to say.

He entered the apartment as soon as she stepped aside and cleared her throat pointedly. “I’d like to talk, too,” she said quietly as she closed the door behind him. Her hip sent out that annoying jolt of pain with each step of retreat she took back to the couch. Brendon followed only when he had the look of approval from her. It wasn’t just that easy for him to be so considerate towards her, seeing as they had never actually been alone together. However, he knew that they were both vulnerable at the time and the last things they should do were the things he had always daydreamed about.

“So.. umm.. I hear the piano’s coming along great,” he started meekly, careful to look her in the eye from the comfortable distance between them on the couch. She kept looking away or touching her face. They both felt like they were scared teenagers on a first date.

“Yeah, yeah and you’re vocals are fantastic…” As soon as her eyes alighted on him again, they didn’t look away. Her hand dropped to her lap before she let out a short sigh. “Look, Brendon. I don’t want things to be awkward between us because of what happened.”

“Me neither. That’s exactly why I came over.”

“I swear I didn’t know he has a girlfriend, Brendon. I’m not like that.”

“Danielle, it’s okay. I know you’re not. I respect you.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure.”

Danielle looked away hesitantly, rubbing her stinging eyes. Brendon scooted closer, almost wanting to reach out and touch her somehow, but he was afraid. “What is it, Dani?” As soon as he spoke, her head fell onto his shoulder, like she knew that he was going to be right there right after she looked away. His hand effortlessly touched her back and rubbed back and forth in a calming motion as she cried softly on his shoulder.

“The last guy I was with did that to me. It was a one night stand. He used me. I don’t want to be used like that, Brendon. I want a /relationship./” She looked up without any fear, even with tears dripping freely from her alluring blue eyes. Brendon was overwhelmed at the closeness of their faces. Her eyes seemed so breathtaking to him, and he could see a few freckles sprinkled over her nose and cheeks that he never would have noticed otherwise. And while she thought that he might not listen to everything she was saying, or understand it all, he was hanging onto her every word as if he would never get to speak with her again.

“I want that, too.”

His words made her spine tingle. Their faces were so close that he could feel their breaths intermingling, their bodies so close together. It was clear that they both wanted the kiss, but there was a short distance that had to be cleared before their lips would meet, and Brendon wasn’t going to do it. Danielle leaned toward him, almost falling on top of him after their lips connected together; her thin ones fitting nicely between his overwhelmingly large ones.

It was all wonderful and all what they both wanted and all fair. Danielle was determined to make a difference between Brendon and Ryan and she didn’t have to look hard to find it. Brendon was so sweet and gentle, not only paying attention to their mouths, but he also made sweet little gestures such as tucking her hair behind her ears and letting her take control. Give a little, take a little.

At the same speed that their tongues were dancing around in each others mouths, their minds seemed to drift away, too wrapped up in each other to comprehend anything but details, details, details. The bigger picture wasn’t in either of their heads, only each other. Fortunately, Danielle was also able to remain sensible throughout their absolutely unprofessional meeting, probably due to what had happened the previous night, to create some space between their mouths so she could speak.

They were both panting, letting out rhythmic breaths as they kept the same fulfilled gaze. Brendon was grateful of this, showing it by running is fingers in circles on the small of her back. Danielle let out a long breath, although she was still trying to keep up with it, and spoke tenderly. “Brendon…” He kept staring into her eyes, still appreciative of every single word that she spoke. “I’m not sure about this… I don’t want to do anything we’ll regret.”

Brendon sighed, too. It wasn’t something he wanted to hear, but he wasn’t one to be blinded from real reason just because a dash of testosterone and estrogen were added to the atmosphere, especially when it was being pointed out to him. He wouldn’t admit it to her, but sharing those kisses had already fueled an ounce of regret that had been in the back of his head since he showed up at her door. And she felt the exact same way.

“It’s okay… I get it.” His handed glided up to her ear, placing his fingers in her hair and sliding them to the back of her head, a hopeful but lopsided smile on his lips all the while.

Another deep breath was taken of sheer relief. “Thank you so much,” she said at the end of the long breath before pulling him into a much needed hug. He returned it without a second thought, the better side of him telling the rest of him that all she needed at that moment was a friend, though they both wanted so much more.

“You’re welcome, Dani.”
