Spencer Anthony had no idea he would save someone’s life that Saturday morning. In fact, the only thing that had been on his mind when he woke up was the hot party he was going to in the evening. He wanted to meet with his best friend, Chris Matthews, before the party so that they could go together. He hadn’t hung out with Chris in a while, since they were at different schools now, they didn’t meet as often as they liked. It had been Chris who had called to tell him about the party, in fact.
Now Spencer waited for Chris outside Tivoli restaurant. He was already 15 minutes late. Spencer checked his Vancheron & Constantin watch again and gave a loud sigh. He caught the eye of a pretty girl who was waiting for a bus near where he was standing. She stared at him appraisingly, smiled and slowly and seductively bit down on her bottom lip.
“Wow,” Spencer muttered, a grin on his face. He was used to having a favorable effect on females, and he usually used it to his own advantage. He checked his watch again, looked up at the girl, who was wearing a short red dress which showed off some fine curves, and decided to go flirt a little with her. If Chris happened to arrive soon, he might be witness to some first class macking. But before he walked two steps in the inviting girl’s direction, he spotted something that made him stop in his tracks. A girl had just sauntered purposely past him, but it wasn’t her face that had frozen Spencer, it was the direction she was headed to. She appeared to be going to her car, a silver Nissan Skyline. The only problem was that it was parked across the road. Which, in this case, was not a road, but a fairly busy highway. Plus, there wasn’t a single traffic light or crossing in sight. Spencer groaned as he realized what the stupid girl was about to do.
“That girl’s crazy,” he said out loud and he started jogging after her. “Hey! Miss! Stop!”
Not even a damn acknowledgement. The girl didn’t even turn her head, let alone slow down. She was approaching the curb now and Spencer quickened now. He hoped that this girl really was not attempting to cross Sunset Boulevard, but he knew that if she was, he was gonna stop her crazy ass.
She had reached the curb and looked left, right and left again, as a small child crossing the road at a crossing would do. Except that she wasn’t a small child and this was no crossing. Then she stepped off the curb, into the path of a speeding oncoming car. Spencer couldn’t believe that she hadn’t seen it coming and he put on a burst of speed- he hadn’t gotten his spot on his school football team for being pretty. He reached her just in time and, grabbing her by the shoulders, pulled her back onto him. Her extra weight, plus the fact that he had been running when he got hold of her, caused him to lose his balance and they both fell back. Spencer felt the air knocked out of him and winced as he heard the thump of the girls head hit the sidewalk. The speeding car swept past them almost in slow motion and Spencer felt sickened as he saw how close the tires came to the mystery girl’s feet. Almost as if people had just noticed what was going on, the area was suddenly filled with onlookers and people yelling out advice. Wearily, Spencer let his head hit the sidewalk as well, wondering why the hell he had even woken up that morning.
