Chapter 7

Payton was currently busy adjusting Baby J’s brand new nasal oxygen tube. His breathing had improved a great deal over the past 48 hours, and Payton was ecstatic to be able to remove the invasive endotracheal tube that had been inserted down his throat. It was now replaced by a thin small tube that fit via two small prongs inserted into his nose. “There you go sweetie, your doing so much better.” she cooed softly to the infant.

“Can I talk to you for a moment?” The question came from Hannah, the same NNP that had been working the ward all night. Payton gave her a quick glance before replying, “Sure, what’s up?” She continued to tinker with the oxygen levels on the nasal tube as she tried to get the optimal level that the infant needed.

Hannah looked around before she spoke, “I was just wondering if you could do the parent update for Baby Stump?” Payton stopped what she was doing and looked up at Hannah with a confused look, “Hasn’t Dr. Conroy talked to them yet?” she asked.

Hannah sighed then shook her head, “ Only the initial update when we first moved her to the NICU.” then she decided to voice her real concern, “Ok, I was there when he talked to the Father, and I have to say that Dr. Conroy was pretty abrupt with him. I know he was in a hurry to get back to the NICU, but I think Mr. Stump was a little…put off.” She rushed on to plead her case, “You usually have such a good rapport with the families, I thought this might be an ideal situation to use that.” She gave Payton a hopeful smile.

This was not the first time that Payton had heard this complaint. She knew that Dan was a good doctor, but his bedside manner was somewhat lacking. She chewed on her lower lip as she pondered what to do. “Let me talk to him, but I can’t promise that Dan won’t insist on talking to them himself.”

She shouldn’t have worried, turns out that Dr. Conroy was more than happy to turn the responsibility of consulting with the Stumps over to Payton. He loved being a doctor, but dealing with the families was sometimes a challenge for him.

As soon as she had the go ahead, within minutes Payton was knocking on the door of the private recovery room. When she heard a voice say, “Come in.” she stuck her head around the door and smiled. “Hello.” she called. As she pushed the door the rest of the way open and walked into the room she quickly glanced down at the file in her hand. ‘Patient: Marie Stump AGE:24’

Payton saw very pretty young blonde woman laying in the center of the hospital bed. She seemed pale and the face she was making as she tried to sit up a bit implied she might be feeling pain from the c-section. Sitting beside her holding her hand was a young man who looked to be somewhere around his mid twenties. She couldn’t place why, but he seemed a little familiar to Payton.

“Hi I’m Dr. Wells.” She put out her hand first to the husband for a brief handshake, then reached over and shook the wife’s hand. “I’m here to give you an update on the condition of your daughter, and to answer as many questions as I can.”

The man answered, “I’m Patrick, and this is my wife Marie, and over there is our close family friend Pete.” He indicated someone that had been sitting in a chair in the back corner of the room. When he stood up and Payton made eye contact with a pair of familiar honey brown eyes, she nearly gasped out loud. ‘OH MY GOD’ she thought. Instantly it clicked in her head exactly who she was standing in the room with.

That was why Patrick had seemed so familiar and now she realized that even the name Stump had tickled the back of her brain when she had heard it. ‘Get a grip girl!’ Payton thought to herself as she finally had the presence of mind to offer her hand to Pete. “Hi.” he said softly. He was staring back at her intently. ‘Wow, he really is gorgeous.’ she couldn’t help but think. She felt a slight flush of her checks before she looked away.

Slightly embarrassed at being caught off guard, Payton decided now was not the time to have a teenie moment. She gave herself a mental shake to focus back on what she had come to do.

Turning to Patrick and Marie she said “First of all, I want to assure you that your daughter is a fighter and she is now responding much better to treatment.” Marie clutched Patrick’s hand tightly at hearing that.

She continued on, “She is receiving some of the best medical care available for premature infants. We have a full Neonatal Intensive Care Unit set up on this floor, and it is headed by Dr. Ives, one of the top neonatologist in his field.” From experience, Payton knew that it was important to establish confidence and trust between the NICU team and the parents.

Payton went on to explain in full detail the condition of their daughter and all the measures that had been taken since her birth. She patiently answered all the questions that they had, and tried to prepare them for what to expect in the next few days and weeks ahead.

Finally she asked them, “Would you like to see your daughter?” Marie and Patrick looked at one another. The look on their faces were both a mixture of happiness and anxiety. Marie had tears in her eyes when she answered for both of them, “I think we would really like that.” she said softly.

Payton gave an understanding smile, “I’ll check with the nurses about getting you up and moving, then we can get you in a wheel chair to go over and see your baby.” Then she offered, “I’m on duty for a while yet tonight, so I’ll have the nurse page me when you get to the NICU. You’ll have a lot of questions about some of the things you will see while with your daughter.”

For the first time Pete spoke, “Um…can anyone else see the baby?” Payton looked over at him and nodded, “As long as Mom and Dad give the ok, and it stays two at a time.” then she remembered to add, “We do ask that anyone with a cold or any type of communicable disease refrain from entering the NICU.”

Everyone nodded in understanding, and plans were set in motion to get a nurse to help get Marie moving out of the bed. Any discomfort she was feeling took a backseat to the thought of finally seeing her baby.

As Payton was opening the door to walk out, she remembered one last thing. “ Do you have a name yet?” Patrick looked from her to Marie with a questioning look on his face. Finally Marie answered, “I want to call her Sophie.” then she looked at Patrick, “Is that alright?” He looked at her with love in his eyes, “Of course sweetie. Anything you want.” Patrick put his arms around her and the couple became lost in the comfort of one another.

Payton had finally slipped out the door and was heading down the hallway when she heard, “Hey!” She turned around and to her surprise it was Pete. He caught up to her and said, “I just want to thank you for what you did in there.” he nervously ran his across the back of his neck. “They really needed some kind of reassurance, you know?”

Payton shook her head and said, “No need to thank me, I was just doing my job. It’s important that they know exactly what’s going on.” Pete‘s stare was beginning to make her a little self-conscious. Then he said, “Just the same, thank you.” He gave her a sweet little smile, before he turned around, both hands in his pockets and headed back toward the room. As Payton watched the gorgeous guy walk away she couldn‘t help but think, ‘Wow.’

Sometime later Pete was sitting in a chair located in the NICU waiting area. He was waiting for Patrick to come and tell him he could come back and see Sophie.

He was dead tired, and needed to go and get some sleep. First he was determined to at least get a glimpse of the newest Stump. Dr. Wells had said that she was a fighter and responding well, and that was very welcome news to all.

Once again Pete’s mind drifted back to the intriguing Dr. Wells. When she had walked into the hospital room she was the last thing he had been expecting to see. He was expecting a much older person, and surely one that wasn’t quite so attractive.

After the quick knock a head had peeked around the door and at first all Pete could see was a head full of dark russet untamed curls pulled back in a sloppy ponytail. As she introduced herself to Patrick and Marie, Pete had studied her from where he was sitting. All he could tell was that she was a very small woman who couldn’t have been taller than 5’1 or 5’2. She was wearing a pair of plain blue hospital pants with a pair of Nike runners on her feet. Her shirt was a white scrub top with some type of design on it. ‘Is that Cookie Monster?’ He squinted to get a better look. All in all she had looked more like a college student than a doctor.

The real surprise came when Patrick introduced Pete, and she turned around to meet him. He realized that she was beautiful with a small patrician nose that sat above a pair of luscious full lips. All this was noted before he made eye contact with a pair of the most soulful green eyes he had ever seen. Pete actually felt the world tilt. He had never had that reaction before when meeting anyone, and actually wondered if lack of sleep was finally catching up to him.

Pete’s admiration quickly grew beyond her physical appearance as he listened to her talk to Patrick and Marie. She held and air of confidence that left no doubt that she knew what she was talking about and they could trust her to do her job well.

After she had left room, and before Pete even realized what he was doing he was walking out the door right after her. He called out to her, “Hey!” to get her attention.

Once she had stopped and turned around, she gave him a small smile in which Pete discovered for the first time, two deep dimples barely peeking out from her cheeks. All he could think as he stared at her was, ‘Wow’.

She seemed a little flustered when he thanked her, and she told him it wasn’t necessary. After thanking her yet again, ‘God Pete, that was your great plan?’ Pete was now out of ideas of what to say, which was very rare thing for him. He decided to walk away before he made a complete idiot of himself, so he just smiled before heading back to Marie’s room.

Pete was brought back to the here and now when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He looked up and saw Patrick standing there impatiently waiting to be acknowledged. “Sorry! I think I was just daydreaming a little.” Pete said.

Patrick nodded his head and said, “Yeah, you seemed a million miles away there for a minute. Then he asked, “You ready to go back?” Pete gave an affirmative nod before he got up to go meet his new Goddaughter.
