Chapter 20: Changes

Patrick left on Friday. Bobbie spent the day at school. Afterwards she took Eric out for fries and a pop. “How are you feeling, Eric?” “I’m a little sad that Patrick isn’t around.” “He’ll be back in two weeks. On Monday we can call him if you’d like.” “Really? I’d like that.” “How is your dad?” “Um, not good. He’s drinking again. He lost his job yesterday.” “I’m sorry Eric. Do you have any other family that you could live with?” “No. My uncle and aunt have 7 kids already. They’ve told me that they can’t take me in.” “I’m sorry. Things will get better.” “Yeah.” But he was doubtful. After they ate Bobbie took Eric home. She went home and watched T.V. She fell asleep watching Jay Leno.

Around 4 am the phone rang. “Hello?” “Is this Bobbie Madison?” Her heart stopped. She prayed that Patrick was alright. “Yyess.” She finally got out. “This is Memorial Hospital. We have one of your students here. Eric Roy. Could you come in?” “Yes. I’ll be there soon.” She grabbed her purse and keys.

It took her 45 minutes to arrive at the hospital. She went to the ER desk. “I got a call for an Eric Roy.” “Oh, yes. You are his teacher?” “Yes, how is he?” “I’ll get the doctor.” A few minutes later a doctor showed up. “Hello, Miss Madison. I’m Dr Galloway.” “Call me Bobbie.” “Eric, has been asking for you.” “Can you tell me what happened.” “His father was drunk and they were in the car together. His father hit another car head on.” “Oh my god. How is everyone?” “Eric’s father died on the scene. Everyone else is fine except some scrapes and stitches. We’d like to keep Eric overnight. If everything goes well he can get out on Sunday.” “Okay. Um, I know his mother died and his uncle and aunt don’t really want him. Where will he go?” “We called social services. They are in with him now. You can talk to them.” “Alright. Thank you.”

She couldn’t believe what happened. Why Eric? “Miss Madison?” “Yes, call me Bobbie.” “Okay, the doctor told me that you are Eric’s teacher.” “Yes, well almost more than a teacher. I really care for him.” “I’m the Social Worker. My name is Mrs. Judd, but you can call me Gina.” “Nice to meet you even though it’s under these circumstances. What is going to happen with Eric?” “Well, we contacted his uncle and aunt, but you already know that they want nothing really to do with him. Once he gets out of here he’ll go into foster care.” “Is there any way I could take him?” “You could fill out the paperwork. It does take some time though.” “Is there any way that you can bend the rules. Eric has been through so much in his young life.” “I agree. I’ll talk to my supervisor, but normally we don’t bend the rules.” “Oh, do you have the paperwork that I can fill out?” “Yes I do.” She got the papers and handed them to Bobbie. “I’ll talk to my supervisor later this morning and talk to you. I might stop back. Can I have your phone number?” “Sure.” Bobbie gave her, her phone number. “I’ll be in touch, but like I said we normally don’t bend the rules. Talk to you later.” “Bye.” After Gina was out of ear shot Bobbie said, “What a bitch.” She decided to call Patrick. It rang four times. “Yeah?” “Patrick, it’s me. I’m sorry to call you so early.” He sat up in bed. “Are you alright? You’re not hurt are you?” “I’m fine. It’s Eric. His dad was drinking and driving with Eric. Patrick, Eric is fine. But he’s dad is dead.” “Oh fuck. Have you seen Eric yet?” “No. I should in a little bit. They are keeping him until Sunday just for precaution. I talked to the Social Worker. Eric really has no family. His uncle and aunt have too many kids and don’t want him” “How in the hell could they do that?” “I don’t know. Anyway, I want to take him in.” “Really?” “Yeah. I talked to the Social Worker. I have to fill out some forms and it might take some time. She’s going to talk to her Supervisor to see if I can get him early.” “I hope you get him earlier. He doesn’t need any more trauma. Do you need me to come home.” “Yes, but you need to do your job. I love you and we’ll be fine.” “I love you. Take care. Tell Eric I’m thinking of him.” “I will. I’ll keep you updated.” “Okay. Bye.”

She went into Eric’s room. He was sleeping. “Eric, things will get better I promise. I’m going to get you no matter what. You don’t deserve what you been given. Patrick says hi and he’s thinking of you.” Bobbie went to the chair and fell asleep. She woke up late in the morning. “Eric, Eric.” He opened his eyes. “Miss Madison, what are you doing here?” “Call me Bobbie. The doctor called me and told me you were hurt.” “How’s my dad?” She couldn’t tell him, but she had to. “Eric, your dad didn’t make it.” “Oh.” He had a blank stare. “Are you alright?” “Yeah, but is it wrong to be glad he’s dead.” “I don’t think so. He hurt you a lot.” She took Eric in her arms. He pulled back. “Are you alright?” “Bobbie, before my dad and I left he beat me again.” She looked at his back. There were so many bruises. “Oh sweetie. Things are going to get better. I promise.” When am I going to get out of the hospital?” “Probably tomorrow.” “Where will I go? I have no home.” “I’m trying to get you to stay with me, but you might have to go into a foster home for a bit.” “No, I hate the foster homes. I’ve been to so many already. I want to be with you.” “I know. You will be.”

Just then Gina came in. “Hello Bobbie, Eric. How are you feeling?” “Okay.” “I’m Gina and will try and help you.” “I have the paperwork done.” Bobbie said. “Alright. I talked to my supervisor this morning. We will try and get Eric into your home by Wednesday. Since you are his teacher and have looked out for him, it helped.” “No, I want to go with Bobbie tomorrow.” Bobbie went to Eric. “Eric sweetie, It’ll be a few days and it’ll give me time to get your room together.” “But I’ll live with you?” “”Yes. I’m going to go home and change so Gina can talk to you. I’ll be back in a few hours.” “Okay. See you later.” “Bobbie, can I talk to you in the hallway?” Gina asked. “Oh, sure.” They walked out in the hallway. “I want to say I’m sorry for this morning. I’ve had some personal issues and shouldn’t of let them get in my way for work.” “It’s alright.” “I really want you to have Eric. It would be in his best interest. I want to see that little boy happy.” “Me too. I do have a question. Will he stay in foster care until he is 18?” “Not unless he is adopted. To tell you the truth, he’s passed adoption age. No one wants a 10 year old. They want a baby or a 3 year old.” “Can I file for adoption for him. When he first came to my class I have felt something for that boy. My boyfriend has even taken him under his care. He’s been teaching him guitar.” “Are you sure about this?” “I have been thinking about it all night. I want him to have a normal life.” “I’ll get the paperwork for you and bring it tomorrow.” “Thank you.” “It might be a long process, but like I said being a teacher helps.” “Alright. See you tomorrow.”

Bobbie went home and took a shower and changed into a T-shirt and jeans. She went into one of the guest rooms. She wrote down some things that she would need for the room for Eric. She grabbed one of Patrick’s hats that he left at her place. She went back to the hospital. “Hi Eric. I got you something.” “Really?” “Yeah. Here you are. It’s one of Patrick’s hats. Do you like it?” “I love it.” He put it on right away. Just then the phone rang. “Hello?” “Hi Babe. How are you and Eric?” “Good. He might come to live with me on Wednesday.” “Oh, that’s great. Can I talk to him?” “Eric, it’s for you.” “Me? Hello?” “Hey Eric. It’s Patrick. How are you doing?” “Alright. I miss you though.” “I’ll be back soon.” “Bobbie gave me one of your hats. I love it.” “That’s good. My hats have special powers. Did you know that?” Eric laughed. “It’s true. Nothing will hurt you. I promise.” “Your funny, Patrick.” “I’ll see you soon and we’ll get back to guitar playing.” “Alright. See you soon.” “Give the phone back to Bobbie.” He handed the phone back to Bobbie. “How are things in New York?” “Good. We will be on Fuse Monday. Tivo it for you and Eric.” “I will. I miss you so much Patrick.” “I’ll be back soon.” “Love you, Trick.” “Love you more.” She hung up the phone. “Is Patrick your boyfriend?” “Yes, we were dating in 2001 and broke up for five years. Now we are back together.” “Will he live with us?” “No, he has his own place. But he’s been spending a lot of time at my house.” “Oh, will you two get married?” “I’m not sure. Patrick means a lot to me.” He smiled. “Eric, do you have any hobbies or any things you like?” “I like Chicago Bears, playing guitar, soccer, Star Wars, Spongebob, and video games.” “Okay. I’m going to leave you tonight. Will that be alright or do you want me to spend the night?” “No, I can stay by myself.” “If you need me have the nurses call. I’ll come right away.” “Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Bye Eric.” She kissed his head. “I love you.” “Love you too.”

Bobbie went to Target and got some bedding with Chicago bears, Spiderman, Spongebob, and Star Wars toys, Soccer ball, books, clothes for Eric, a desk, and a computer. When she got home she put everything in his room. She would have a few days to get everything ready for him. She got something to eat and went to bed. The next morning she got dressed and headed off to the hospital.

“Hello Eric.” “Hi Bobbie.” He was dressed and Gina was there. “Hi Gina. How are you?” “Good. We are almost ready to leave.” “Could I visit him?” “The foster parents don’t really want visitors.” “Oh, okay.” At least she would see him in school. A hour later Bobbie watched Eric leave. She went home and did some work for school and watched some T.V. She went to bed early. She needed Patrick so much. She found the teddy bear that he gave her six years ago, when he went on tour. She fell asleep with tears streaming down her face and holding the bear and dreaming of Patrick and Eric.
