Chad stood in the hallway of the apartment building, staring at the green door with the plastic numbers painted gold nailed to it and letting people know that this was apartment number 3-9. His stomach was doing backflips while butterflies danced inside it. He was extremely nervous and clutching a bouquet of roses and a purple teddy bear in his hands.
Chad had gotten a letter earlier that day that had turned his world upside down. He'd had a daughter with one of his highschool sweethearts when he was fourteen and hadn't even known about her until now. The man felt really guilty about not being there for her for the first eight years of her life even if it hadn't exactly been his fault. Chad knew what it was like to grow up without a father and had vowed that his children would always know who he was, that he was proud of them, and that he loved them unconditionally.
He took a deep breath before reaching up to knock on the door. The mere thirty seconds it took for the door to be opened seemed like an eternity to Chad as he listened to the voices and movement inside, staring down at his worn leather work boots. He looked up again as he heard the knob turn, watching the crack between the door and frame grow bigger until finally he saw a man behind it.
"Can I help you?" asked the big, burly red head.
This man very obviously worked out a lot, wearing a white musle shirt that did it's job well. Chad opened his mouth as if to speak but no sound came out. He was surprised to see this man and, for some stupid reason, hadn't bothered to wonder whether or not Rebecca had started dating again after him. Of course she had. Why wouldn't she? He had. The man looked impatient at the lack of response but Chad was saved from having to face the red head's anger when a female voice emerged from the apartment.
"Who is it Ronald?"
Chad's stomach did a backflip, immediately recognizing that voice. Ronald moved aside to reveal the pretty brunette that the beautiful voice belonged to. Chad though she was just as gorgeous as when they were in ninth grade together. Rebecca obviously didn't recognize him by the polite, curious look on her face though why should she? He had grown out his dirty blond hair to shoulder length and grown a beard.
"Yes?" the woman asked gently.
Chad realized he'd been holding his breath and let it out slowly before answering. "I'm here to see Gemma."
A shadow seemed to pass over Ronald's face while Becca's expression changed to shock.
"Chad? I... o... okay," she said hesitantly and anxiously.
The woman stepped aside and allowed Chad to enter the small Vancouver apartment. He looked around, the front door opening into the living room. It was cozy and small, obviously lived in but not messy. The room had some overstuffed furniture in it and a wooden entertainment set with glass doors. In one corner was a collection of little girls' toys, all pink, fluffy and pretty. There were three other doors; one led to a third floor balcony, one led to the kitchen and the other appeared to lead into a small hallway. The aparment smelled nice, like cookies, sweets, and flowers.
Chad took in the room then turned to look at Becca and Ronald. They were having what seemed to be a heated, whispered conversation. The two stopped when they saw him watching them. Chad cleared his throat nervously then held out the flowers to Rebecca.
"I brought these for you," he mumbled, feeling incredibly stupid and small for some odd reason.
Rebecca smiled gently and took the roses.
"Thank you," she said before handing to the other man, who was glaring at Chad. "Put these in some water for me?"
Ronald nodded and leaned over to give her a kiss on the lips before heading into the kitchen. The woman watched him for a second before turning her attention back to Chad.
"Gemma's in her room."
Rebecca moved past him towards the small hallway, Chad turning to follow. The hallway had four doorways in it, one decorated with pink and had a purple G on it. Becca walked towards this door and opened it. Chad hesitated before stepping forward, his breatch catching in his throat at what he saw.
