Rebecca noticed Chad come in and stood up from where she'd been sitting on the couch. "You should've at least called first."
Chad shifted slightly and looked down at his feet. "I'm sorry. Your letter just caught me by surprise."
The woman watched him for a second before looking down at her feet as well, crossing her arms over her chest. An awkward silence between them, neither really knowing what to say. Finally, Chad's cell phone rang and broke the loud quiet. He pulled the phone out and looked at the caller id which said 'Mike'. Chad pressed the end button, not really feeling like talking to his brother right now, and put the cell back in his pocket.
"I should be going..."
Becca nodded and Chad hesitated slightly before pulling a folded check out of his back pocket and holding it out to her.
"Here, this is for you. I'll give you more when I get my paycheck in a week. I'm sorry about your parents."
The letter had specified that her parents had died in a house fire not too long ago and that she was having financial trouble. Chad was wondering if that was he only reason she had written him at all but was willing to give her the benefit of doubt, especially sing he was broke. Rebecca steppd forward and took it from him.
"Thanks."
Chad nodded and put his hands in his pocket. "Could I give you my number so Gemma can call me if she wants to?"
When Rebecca nodded and handed him a notepad and pen off an end table, he quickly wrote down his cell number then handed the writing untensils back to her. Chad was about to turn and leave when the woman said 'wait' and scribbled something down on the paper, carefully tearing it in half then giving him the peace she'd scribbled on. He took it then walked to the door. Once in the main hallway, he looked down at the paper and smiled slightly as he saw it was a number. He pulled out his wallet and slipped the number inside before heading towards the elevator. Chad was exhausted from the day and was ready to go home and sleep even though it was only 8:30.
He was just about to push the button on the wall with the arrow pointing down when he heard the bell ring signaling that the elevator had arrived at that floor. Chad stepped back as the doors opened simultaneously, waiting for whoever was on to get off. It took him a second to realize that person was Ronald and he was coming straight at him. The red-headed man stood directly in front of Chad, muscles tensed and anger appearent on his face as he tried to look intimidating.
"Stay away from my girlfriend or else," he snarled.
Chad normally wouldn't take this too kindly and would fight back but this time he bit his tongue and took a step away, thinking 'Somebody has jealousy issues'. He didn't think Rebecca would appreciate the two guys getting into a fight the first day they'd ever met. Ronald smirked arrogantly at Chad's reaction and strutted to his door, stepping inside. Chad's jaw clenched with anger and he stepped into the elevator, pushing the button for the first floor. He felt like he was a dog running from a fight with his tail between his leg and his pride being crushed. He hated it.
Chad leaned back against the wall and tilted his head back against it, breathing slowly as he pushed his anger aside. He was thinking of Gemma. This was all for her, no one else. Chad refused to allow himself to do anything that would jeopordize his chances at being able to be a permanent fixture in the little girl's life and that meant staying Rebecca's good graces, at least for now.
Okay, so maybe that was a little selfish of him in a way but he remembered what it was like growing up without a permanent father figure in his life. While his mom had done the best she could for her sons and had, in fact, been a great mother, there were just some things a mother couldn't do and that you needed a father for. Or, at least, someone like a father. Chad didn't want Gemma to go through her life without him and wanted her to know what it was like to grow up with a father. Even if he wasn't with Rebecca, he could still be there for her and planned to be.
