He had hardly paid attention throughout the council. He was vaguely aware that he should be respectful, at least block out his cynical thoughts. He listened to talk about strengths and weaknesses. Talk about peace. When asked what his thoughts were, he had had to fight hard not to startle visibly, and had nearly said, "A falsehood and a fantasy." For that was what it would amount to in the end. A pretty lie and a wistful dream. But he had stopped himself just in time. Instead, he had murmured in assent. Let them keep that delusion. He could pretend.
