One Of Those Nights

Kendra walked into the florist shop. She was wanting to get some flowers for her friend. She walked around the store until she found what she wanted. She went to pick it up, but at the same time someone else picked the flowers up.

“Hey, I want those.”

She looked up into a pair of dark brown eyes.

“Too bad. So do I.”

“I had my hands on them first.”

“So what. I want these for a date.”

“I’m sure the skank wouldn’t miss these flowers.”

“What the hell did I do to you?”

“Just let go.”

“There’s some different colors over there.”

Kendra turned around. By the time she turned back he was at the counter.

“You bastard.”

He walked out giving her an evil smile.

@~

“I had these beautiful flowers for you, but this asshole took them right out of my hands.”

“It’s fine. Stop talking about it. You’ll have a great time. Ryan says that Brendon is really sweet.”

“Anything is better than the guy at the flower shop. How did the move go?”

“Good. I have almost everything moved into Ryan’s house. I want to thank you for going on this date with Brendon. Since he moved to Vegas he hasn’t met too many women.”

“You owe me for this blind date. Anyway, it will be nice to get out since Max.”

“Has he called you lately?”

“No, but I know I haven’t heard the last of him.”

Barbara pulled into a parking space and walked into the restaurant.

“There they are.”

Barbara and Kendra walked to the table. Ryan stood up and kissed Barbara.

“You!”

Barbara and Ryan turned toward Kendra.

“What’s the problem?” Barbara asked.

“It’s him.”

“What?”

“The guy from the flower shop.”

“Hey, I guess you would be the skank then.”

Brendon handed Kendra the flowers.

“Brendon, what the hell?”

“She knows what I mean, Ryan.”

“Well, I guess you two know each other.”

“Not officially. I’m Brendon.”

“I’m Kendra.”

“Did you find any flowers?”

“Shut up.”

“Kendra, can we just have a good meal?”

“Alright. For you. Not for that, that ass.”

Kendra sat next to Brendon.

“How was your day?”

Ryan asked Kendra.

“Fine. I got a couple paintings done.”

“Kendra is an artist.” Barbara told Brendon.

“I’d like to see some of your stuff.”

“I’m sure.” Kendra rolled her eyes.

“Why don’t we order?”

The waitress came and the four of them ordered. Barbara and Ryan were quietly talking.

“Are you alright?” Brendon asked.

“Not really. If I would of known it was you I wouldn’t of shown up.”

“Am I that bad?”

“Let see, you basically steal flowers out of my hands, I would have to say yes.”

“I’m really sorry.”

“Are you?”

“Not really.”

“God, you’re an ass.”

Their food came and Kendra ate quickly.

“I’m going to go.”

“Ken, we’re not done eating.”

“I’m really sorry, Barbara. I forgot I have to finish a drawing. I’ll get a cab.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, it’s fine.”

“Alright. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“Nice to meet you, Brendon. Bye, Ryan.”

“She’s nice.”

“Stop it. You don’t know her. You must have been a real dick.”

“Barbs, you know she has her moods.”

“Ry, I suggest you stop unless you want the couch tonight.”

Brendon laughed, but stopped when Barbara glanced at him. They finished eating and Ryan took Brendon home.

“I’m sorry about tonight, Ryan.”

“It’s fine. I just thought you and Kendra were perfect for each other. Actually, both Barbara and I thought that.”

“Uh, do you have Kendra’s number?”

“Sure. Why?”

“I want to apologize.”

“Here. She has been through a lot. Try and not be a smart ass. Which I know is hard for you.”

“Thanks. I’ll see you.”

“Bye.”

Brendon went into his apartment and took out the phone number. He dialed the number, but got the machine.

“Kendra, this is Brendon. I just wanted to say I’m sorry. I would like to see you again. I know I was a jerk. Please call me. My number is 525-2427.”

Brendon hung up.

@~

“Who was that?”

“A guy that Barbara was setting me up with.”

“Oh, do you like him?”

“What do you think?”

“I think you might.”

“Max, I’m here with you and he’s probably in his apartment alone. I like you.” Kendra kissed Max.

“Only like?”

“Well, love. You know I love you.”

“So are we back together?”

“I don’t know. I’ve missed you so much.”

“Same here.”

“Alright. But any hitting or put downs that’s it. I’m out.”

“I told you that I was sorry.”

“I know. Do you want to spend the night?”

“Of course. Tomorrow you can move your stuff back to my place.”

The phone rang.

@~

When Barbara got home she called Kendra.

“Kendra, I want to apologize about Brendon.”

“It’s fine. Listen, can I call you tomorrow?”

“Why?”

“No reason.”

“Dammit, he’s there.”

“Barbara, it’s no business of yours.”

“You’re my friend and he hurt you.”

“Just a few times.”

“You aren’t going back to him are you?”

There was silence.

“Kendra, you aren’t serious?”

“Yes, we are back together. Now, I have to go. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

“If you need anything call me.”

“I will. Bye.”

Barbara hung up the phone and put her head in her hands.

“Problems?” She looked up.

“Yeah. Kendra is back with Max.”

“You are kidding me, right?”

“I wish I was. He’s going to hurt her again.”

Ryan sat on the couch and took Barbara in his arms.

“Maybe he won’t.”

“I hope your right.”

“I really thought Brendon and her would hit it off.”

Barbara traced Ryan’s fingers.

“I did too. They probably would of it they never met in the flower shop.”

“So what are you doing tomorrow?”

Barbara didn’t say anything.

“Barbs, are you listening?”

“What?”

“I’m sorry. Just thinking. Do you think we could set them up?”

“Oh no. You stay out of both of their lives now.”

“Listen, Kendra is having an art show in a few weeks, what if we invite Brendon?”

“Are you crazy? She didn’t exactly like him. And don’t forget Max.”

Barbara started kissing Ryan’s neck.

“Stop it. Your not going to get me to, oh god.”

She ran her hand down his chest.

“What?”

“I was saying that you aren’t going to get me to say yes. You aren’t going to invite Brendon.”

Barbara unbuckled Ryan’s belt. He threw his head back.

“What was your answer?”

She moved her hand into his jeans and boxers, stroking him.

“You will not invite him.”

“Ryan, please.” I know they are perfect for each other.”

“Alright. Damn girl. You don’t play fair.” Barbara removed her hand.

“I’m tired. I think I’ll go to bed.” Barbara stood up.

“What?” Ryan asked.

“I got my answer.”

“Get back here.”

Barbara ran to the bedroom with Ryan following her.

@~

“Is he here yet?”

Barbara asked Ryan.

“No, he just called. He’s on his way.”

“Okay. I’m going to talk to Kendra.”

Barbara went to look for Kendra. She went into the back.

“What’s your problem? I just wanted to leave.”

“Max, this is my first show. I want my boyfriend with me.”

“You know this isn’t my thing.”

“None of my things are yours. I’m suppose to go to every dinner, baseball game and wait until 2am until you get home. Why can’t you be here just once?”

Max slapped Kendra.

“Max, stop.”

Barbara ran to Max and grabbed his arm.

“You better leave.”

Barbara went to Kendra.

“Are you alright?”

“Yeah. Please don’t say I told you so.”

“I wouldn’t. Do you want me to call the police?”

“God, no. It was just a slap.”

“How long are you going to let this go on.”

“I’m done talking about this. I need to clean up. Go out there.”

“Fine.”

Barbara walked out to the main floor.

“What happened?”

She turned around to Ryan.

“Max. That’s what. Where is the jerk off?”

“He stormed out of here. Did he hurt her?”

“Yeah. She sees nothing wrong with it. She said it was just a slap. I tell you if you ever laid a hand on me you wouldn't be able to walk.”

“Babe, you don’t know what she is feeling. You aren’t in her situation. I know you care for her and I do too. We just need to be here for her.”

Ryan took Barbara into his arms.

“Hey guys.”

“Finally decided to show up?”

“Traffic was bad. It’s not like she’ll be glad to see me.”

“Well, she doesn’t know what she wants. You should buy something.” Barbara said.

“Barbara, what is he doing here?”

“Oh, Kendra, I invited him. I hope it was alright.”

“Yeah, I guess. Where’s Max?”

“He left.” Ryan said.

“Oh, alright.”

“Who is Max?”

“My boyfriend.”

Brendon looked shocked. He mouthed, “Boyfriend.” to Barbara.

“He’s an asshole.” Barbara whispered.

“What happened to your face?”

“Um, nothing. I ran into a wall. I’m fine.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah. So why are you here?”

Barbara and Ryan decided to leave them alone.

“I wanted to see your stuff and maybe get a picture for my apartment.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really. Want to show me your stuff?”

“It’s called art, dumbass.”

“Alright. Will you show me your art.”

Kendra showed Brendon her paintings and drawings.

“Your very talented.”

“Thank you. I wish Max felt the same way.”

“What?”

“Oh, nothing.”

“I like this one.”

“That’s one of my favorites. There’s a small pond that I go quite often. So, one day I thought I should paint it.”

“I want that one.”

“You sure?”

“Oh my god woman. What did I just say?”

“I’m, I’m, sorry. They can ring you up front. I have to go.”

Kendra ran from Brendon crying.

“Fuck.”

“What did you do?”

Barbara came up behind Brendon.

“Have you been following us around?”

“Yes, now what did you do?”

“Me? Maybe it was her.”

“Right.”

“Oh, okay. I wanted to buy this and she was kind of like she didn’t believe me. I guess what I said came out wrong. I should talk to her.”

“No, I will.” Barbara went to find Kendra.

“Ryan, I’m really sorry. I was just fooling around.”

“It’s not you. Her boyfriend is a real ass and it affects her.”

“I didn’t know. Do you have a piece of paper and pen?”

“No, but there is some at the front desk.”

“Well, I’m going to pay for this.”

@~

“Kendra, what happened?”

Barbara found her in the bathroom.

“Nothing really. He was goofing around, but I took it wrong. I wish I never had this show.”

“Your just sensitive right now. You really need to see what Max is doing to you.”

“Please don’t start on him.”

“I’m sorry. Are you going to come out?”

“In a minute.” Barbara left Kendra alone.

“How I wish Brendon was Max. To have a boyfriend who was interested in my art. Get over it. He’s not and never will be.”

Kendra splashed some water on her face and left the bathroom.

“Kendra, Brendon left this for you.”

Ryan handed her a note and left her alone.

Kendra-

I’m really sorry of how the words came out. I was just fooling around. I hope to see you again. Take care of yourself. Oh, and you could of told me the painting was $500, but I know I’ll enjoy it. Call if you ever need me.

Brendon

Kendra smiled. She went to get her coat.

“Barbara, I’m going home. I really need to see Max.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’ll talk to you later.” Kendra drove home and walked into the living room.

“Max, are you home?”

“Yeah.” She turned around.

“Why aren’t the lights on?”

“I seen you with him.”

“Who? What are you talking about?”

“Brendon. He was at the show tonight wasn’t he?”

“Yes, but it’s not like that.”

Max hit her and she fell.

“Like what?”

“I know your seeing him.”

“I’m not.”

She started to get up, but he hit her again. That was the last thing she remembered.

@~

“How are you doing?” Barbara asked.

Kendra came over to Barbara and Ryan’s for the rest of her boxes. She moved in after Max had beat her.

“I’m doing fine. Having another art show in a few months.”

“That will be good. How about dating? Have you gone out?”

“No, it’s been four months, but I just can’t. I actually have tried to call Brendon, but haven’t gotten to the last number. He’s probably seeing someone by now.”

“No, he’s not.”

“Well, maybe I will call him soon. I really should go. I need to get some groceries.”

“If you need anything let us know.”

“Okay. Bye.”

@~

Walking out with her bags of groceries Kendra seen Max by her car.

“What do you want?”

“I just wanted to say that I was sorry.”

“Yeah, well that’s nice. I really need to go. Please move.”

“Babe, listen to me.” He grabbed her arm.

“No, let me go.”

“I love you.”

“No, you don’t. You hurt me over and over. Now let me go.”

In the corner of her eye she seen Brendon walking to them.

“I want us to get back together.”

“Sweetheart, I’ve been looking all over for you.”

Brendon said as he wrapped his arms around her.

“Can you let go of her arm?”

“Your seeing him now?”

“Um, yeah. Now please leave me alone.”

“When did you start dating?”

“It doesn’t matter. Now you heard Kendra. Let her go.”

Max let Kendra’s arm go.

“This isn’t over.”

“Are you threatening her? I suggest you just walk away and walk away from her.”

Max punch Brendon and Brendon punched him back.

“Will you both stop it.”

Max and Brendon fell to the ground and continued to fight.

“I’m leaving. Now you two better get out of the way or I’ll run you both over.”

Brendon got up.

“Leave her alone. She doesn’t want to be with her.”

“I’ll talk to you later.”

Max said to Kendra and walked away.

“You better come with me. You’ll need to get your face cleaned up.”

“Alright.”

“Did you drive?”

“No, I took the bus.”

“Mr. famous rock star takes the bus?”

“Shocking, I know.”

Kendra drove Brendon to her apartment.

“You have a nice place.”

“Thank you. I just moved in a few weeks ago.”

“Yeah, Ryan told me you moved in with them.”

“Oh, did he say why?”

“No.”

“Okay. Well, you need to get that cleaned up. I’ll be right back.”

Kendra went into the bathroom to get some first aide supplies. Brendon sat on the couch waiting for her.

“I got some stuff. It’s going to make your face sting though.”

“That’s fine.”

Kendra washed Brendon’s face with a warm wash cloth first and then cleaned out the cuts.

“Let that cool before you put the band aids on.”

“Did he beat you?”

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Yes, he did. The night of the art show when I came home it was the worst. I ended up in the hospital. Today was the first day I seen him since then.”

“Good thing I came along then.” Kendra smiled.

“You do seem different.” Brendon said as he took her hand.

“Is it good or bad?”

“Bad. You don’t have that spark you had when I met you in the flower shop.”

“You mean when you stole the flowers.”

“I had them first.”

“You like to think that.”

“Anyway, I was wondering if you would like to go out sometime.”

“Yes. I’ve been trying to call you.”

“You have? Why didn’t you leave any messages.”

“Because I never actually got around to letting it ring.”

“Want to know something? I did the same thing. I don’t know how many times I tried to call you. So, would you want to go out tomorrow?”

“Yeah. Around 7:00 be alright.”

“Sure. Well, I really should go.”

“Um, Brendon?”

“What?”

“Could you stay overnight?”

“Well, I usually like to buy the girl dinner first.”

“Not that. I just am a little scared. You heard Max.”

“I’ll stay overnight. You have nothing to worry about. I’ll sleep on the couch.”

“Thank you.”

Kendra kissed him on the cheek.
