I looked over at my husband and smiled. I could tell he forced himself to smile back. His fingers were tapping a beat on the arms of the chair as we waited for the doctor. Looking around the office I noticed a framed photo of three smiling children. "Probably his kids." I said glancing over at Gerard.
"Yeah" He said without really looking at the photo. "So what's taking him so long?"
"Guess he's waiting for some of the test results." I had been examined by the doctor and several tests were performed all while Gerard had sat in the waiting room. Now we were in the doctor’s inner office waiting for him to come in to speak to us.
"He needs to get the fuck in here and tell us what he knows." Gerard said shifting in his chair. "I hate waiting like this."
I was about to answer when the door opened and Dr Kingston walked in. He held out his hand to Gerard and introduced himself. Once we were all seated he opened the folder he had carried in.
"First off congratulations. I understand this pregnancy is quite a surprise. Laura told me how her pervious doctor had led her to believe that she would never get pregnant." He laughed slightly, "Never say never."
Beside me Gerard began drumming his fingers again. I reached over and took his hand in mine. "Doctor how are the test results?”
He smiled kindly, "Laura you are approximately ten weeks along. I'm assuming you didn't realize you were pregnant because of your irregular menstrual cycle."
"True" I said, "Sometimes I would go for months without having a period."
He nodded, "Yes, that's not unusual for women who suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome " He looked down at the papers on the desk. You blood sugar is a little high but nothing to be concerned with at this time. But it will need to be monitors daily. Your pregnancy is high risk, I'm sure you realize that. Because of the PCOS you need to carefully watch your blood sugar levels and your blood pressure. You have an increased risk for heart problems and stroke."
"Stroke?" Gerard blurted out. "She's too young to have a stroke."
Dr Kingston understood, "Laura is lucky. Her health at this time is very good. She just needs to be extra careful and take care of herself. There is an increased chance of miscarriage in women who suffer from PCOS. We want to make sure that doesn't happen."
I smiled at him, "This baby is a miracle. I'm sure nothing bad will happen." I felt Gerard squeeze my hand.
"Doctor I'm in a band and we will be leaving on tour in a week. Laura was supposed to go with me. Would it be better if she stayed at home?”
I turned and frowned at him but he didn't glance my way. He was waiting for the doctor’s answer.
"Tell me about your travel plans. Are you going out of the country?"
Gerard shook his head, "No, the tour is here in the US. We travel by bus."
"A very nice, large tour bus." I added. It was silly but I didn't want anything Gerard said to sound bad. I didn't want the doctor to say I should stay behind.
"Travel shouldn't be a problem if you take it easy. No heavy lifting, no getting over tired. Your blood sugar levels and blood pressure must be checked daily. Do you travel with any medically trained personal?”
"We do." Gee answered. "And each venue also has their own EMT's."
"Then I don't see this as a problem but if anything changes you need to come home." He said looking directly at me.
"I understand." I said smiling.
"Fine then. You have your prescription for the prenatal vitamins. Make sure you take them daily and let me know if you have any problems such as pain or bleeding.” He closed the folder. “Do you have any other questions for me? I’m not sure how long you plan to be gone but I do want to see Laura in a month.”
Gerard shifted in his chair, "No problem, we’re only gonna be out three weeks this time.” Gerard answered. He glanced over at me then continued, “Uh, I was wondering about if Laura and I can...uh...."
Dr Kingston laughed, "If you can still have relations? Not a problem. Just nothing too wild. No trampolines."
It was hard for me not to smile. Gee and I had experienced some pretty intense lovemaking in the past. I looked over to see him looking down at the carpet. Hell, he was embarrassed.
There was one more thing I had to ask, "Doctor, miscarriages happen in the first few weeks, right?"
He nodded, "Usually within the first twenty weeks."
"So I'm already half way through that." I was trying desperately to think positive thoughts.
"Very true." He seemed to understand my thinking. "Just take care of yourself. No tiring yourself out and no stress."
We thanked him and walked out to the car. Gerard was strangely quiet.
"Gee?" I said once we were in the car.
He looked over at me. "Fuck, Laura. No stress? Shit, that's all our lives are."
I took a deep breath, "It's all gonna be okay." I was going to convince him of this as soon as I could convince myself.
He leaned his head back against the headrest, "Are you sure you don’t' want to stay with Mom?"
I laughed, "No, I don’t want to stay with your mom. I'm going with you." I tilted my head with a sudden thought, "We are going with you."
He looked shocked a moment then I saw a light in his eyes, "Yeah, both of you are going with me." He placed his hand on my abdomen and smiled.
After the appointment we headed to a Mexican restaurant for some lunch. It was a nice day so we asked to be seated out on the secluded terrace. I was feeling so damn happy. Yeah, part of me worried about all the shit that was going on in our lives but the one thought that was really on my mind was the baby I was carrying. We placed our orders and sat back trying to relax.
"It's so beautiful here." I said happily.
"Yeah."
"Okay, you really gotta work on your fake happiness." I said looking directly at him.
He returned my stare a moment then truly smiled, "I am happy and terrified at the same time."
"Me too." I nodded, "I don't want to tell anyone I'm pregnant. Not yet." The fear of a miscarriage made me feel this way.
"Understood." He took a chip out of the basket and dipped it in salsa. "I can't believe I'm gonna be a dad."
I smiled, "I can't believe I'm a gonna be a mom. For so many years I just believed it was impossible. I'd see other women with their kids and try not to be jealous."
"I've been thinking. I still think it would be best for you to stay here." He held up his hand before I could interrupt, "But since you won't I'm going to talk to Brain about getting special security for you."
"But Gee. People will notice and wonder why."
"I don't give a fuck what people wonder. I want you safe. I want our baby to be safe." He grabbed my hand. "Laura, I'm really trying, you know?"
"I know." I said stroking his hand with my thumb. "It’s gonna be okay."
I could tell he didn't believe me but I was determined to make him believe. My cell phone went off. I found it in my purse. "Hello?"
"Laura, it's me Jenny."
"Hey Jenny. How are you feeling?"
"Better than yesterday. I'm getting to leave the hospital in the morning."
I repeated the news to Gerard, "That's great." I said
"Yeah, well I called to tell you something. Troy was actually here."
"You mean at the hospital?"
"Yeah, about an hour ago. He said he just wanted to see how I was doing."
I was puzzled, "How did he know what happened?"
"That's what I don't know. The story wasn't in the paper. Only my dad and his wife know. I mean other than you and Gee and whoever you told."
Wow, this was confusing, "I told Alicia but I know she and Mikey have nothing to do with him."
"Him, who?" Gerard asked.
"Hold on a minute, Jenny." I lowered the phone. Troy went to the hospital to see her."
"What?" he was obviously as confused as I was.
I shrugged, "Jenny, what did he say?"
"That's the weird part. He seemed really out of it, you know? I asked him how he knew I was in the hospital and he said something really strange. He said that she told him she'd made a mistake. That she's hurt the wrong one. Hell, I got chills listening to him. I asked him who she was but he just stared at me. Laura, I don't know what's going on."
I sat staring at the tabletop trying to think. "Jenny, I don't know either." was all I could come up with.
"There's something else." She said, "He gave me something to give to Gerard."
Now fear began to travel up my spine. "He gave you something for Gerard?" I looked over at my husband to see him frowning.
"Troy said she told him to give it to me to give to Gerard."
Oh fuck. It felt like my heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"
"It's a sealed envelope."
The waitress arrived with our lunch; "Jenny, Gee and I are having lunch now. We'll stop by the hospital in about an hour."
"Okay." She said softly.” Laura, I'm kinda scared. Troy freaked me out."
"I'm sorry." I told her sincerely. "Try not to worry, okay?"
"I will." She said, "but I'm really more worried about you and Gerard. I think Troy is demented. He really looked fucked up."
"See you soon." I said not knowing what else to say. I disconnected and looked over at Gee who was waiting for me to explain. Shit, so much for a nice stress-free lunch.
