The sun made it’s way cleverly through the small gaps of plastic, illuminating the room, almost fooling any casual observer into believing this was the bedroom of two lovers. An act of forgery created by carefully arranged furniture and bright paints, one had to be far shrewder to catch the fact that the bedroom door had a lock that required a key; a key that only one of the houses’ occupants possessed.
Sighing, I threw an arm over my tired eyes, knowing the burning behind the lids would not disappear any time soon and with that knowledge, resignedly, rolled off of the bed, landing on my feet and trudging my way out of the all too bright room, down the hallway and into the kitchen where I knew I would find him.
Reaching the blue and white laminated floor, my eyes quickly scanned the area for any indication that last night had held anything but the nightmare he promised it had been, shifting from one end of perfectly white countertop to the next, before finally landing on him, casually leaning against the flat surface, a smirk which I had come to recognize as his trademark carefully etched across his lips.
“Morning.” I nodded my response, settling into the bar stool across the table from him, taking in the way his fingers cradled the steaming mug, his dark hair disheveled from sleep, his eyes half lidded as though he was perpetually tired. I gladly accepted the mug he slid across the counter to me, a response which, months, even weeks ago, would never have occurred quite so readily.
Sipping the searing liquid, I took perverse pleasure in the way it scalded my tongue, making it burn for hours after I had finished; perhaps an indication to one of the ways I had changed, the ways he had changed me.
“So, I have to go out this morning, I’ve got some people I need to meet with, so you’re on your own for a few hours.” Again I used a nod as my response, not lifting my tired eyes from the swirling black liquid within the ceramic mug. I barely heard him move, perhaps yet another part of his trademark as well, this ‘silent approach’ he had seemingly perfected. His fingers lifting my chin, his eyes boring into mine reminded me where I was and who I was with. “Kaelin, you know the rules.” His eyes locked once more with mine, as a I offered a soft nod, not breaking his gaze, before he released my chin, draining his mug and heading towards our, now shared, bedroom.
I knew I should feel some sort of hate or anger at being talked to like that, certainly I could still conjure up those feelings where he was concerned, couldn’t I? Try as I might, they didn’t seem to want to appear, and with this recognition I instead found fear, which I eagerly welcomed, a long lost friend who reminds you that you’re still alive.
Wiping my hands on the dishtowel beside the sink, I heaved a small sigh of exhaustion before ambling into the spacious living room, intent to sit for a few minutes before I finished cleaning around the house.
Slipping down into the plush leather couch, I found myself lying on my side, my knees pulled up to my chest as a yawn fought its way past my lips, my eyes fluttering shut despite my weak protests.
“Kaelin.” The soft mention of my name alerted me to the fact that I had in fact fallen asleep; my eyes flickered open to glimpse his retreating back. Jumping off the couch, I quickly followed, distractedly rubbing the sleep from my eyes. He was walking extremely fast and I stumbled a bit in my attempt to catch up. Spotting him entering the basement, I quickly jogged to meet him at the bottom, where I knew he’d wait for me.
Curiosity coursed through my veins as I waited patiently beside him, wondering why we were standing unspeaking at the bottom of the stairs; I knew better than to speak though, so I bit on my bottom lip in impatience.
“I want to show you something.” At my nod, he reached for my hand, encasing it between inscribed fingers, all the while leading me further into the dim basement, always further and further from the light of the staircase. My eyes darted to the right and left as we continued to walk deeper, I found myself wondering how big the basement really was, if perhaps it reached underground. Gathering my courage, I steeled myself to ask him that very question when he suddenly stopped, causing me to bump into his back. Furrowing my brows, I looked up at him in question, his lips twisted into that smirk yet again, as he nodded towards a wooden door I had never seen before. Instinctively, I knew I did not want to open that door, did not want to know what lie within, and I found myself shrinking away from it. Clasping my wrist, I felt myself being dragged closer, my heart hammering against my rib cage in protest.
“Open it Kaelin.” I shook my head frantically, my breathing erratic and strained in the suddenly musky room, the walls seeming closer than they had just moments before.
“No…I don’t want to go in there.” Hazel eyes twinkled mischievously, unspoken whispers lying beneath their almost green depths.
“Yes you do. You asked me to bring you here, don’t you remember?” My eyes flashed back to his, bewilderment evident in my own green irises. “Open the door.”
My arm was not attached to my body, it wasn’t listening to my brain scream at it to stay put as it slowly lifted towards the brass knob, grasping the cool metal between pale fingers before gingerly twisting. My whole body was shaking as I watched my arm move of its own free will in bizarre indifference.
My feet too, seemed uncommitted to listening to any instruction from my brain as they dragged my body forwards into the room I had just revealed. Stopping just inside, my senses were assaulted all at once.
The air was suddenly filled with rancid odor, seeming to attack me from every angle, covering me in the aroma, making me gag and choke as I used to my arms as some sort of psychotic fan, pushing the scent away from me with no avail. Coughing, I rushed forwards, my eyes unable to see anything through the darkness that fell like a curtain as I penetrated further into the room.
Spinning back around, I squinted through the darkness, my eyes searching for the door and finding only more darkness; darkness so heavy it pressed down on my eyes, forcing me to squeeze them shut.
“Help!” A useless cry even if it was heard, though when had that ever stopped me in the past? I hollered the futile word a few more times before collapsing onto the cold floor, reveling in the bitter concrete that met my bare legs, sending shivers through my body as I pulled my legs closer to me once again.
Hours seemed to pass as I remained sitting on the bitingly cold floor, my whole body convulsing from the arctic air, my teeth chattering fiercely. Still, I could not convince myself to move; my head felt like lead, too heavy to lift from its resting place on my knees.
“Kaelin?” Fire burned through me at the sound of my name being called, the familiar voice sending a jolt of energy through me, snapping me back to reality.
“Over here!” I screamed, swiveling around and around, my eyes purging desperately through the darkness.
“Kaelin? Where the fuck are you?” Reaching my arms out in front of me as a guide, I felt solid wall. Frowning, I slid my hands along the wall, waiting to catch a corner that would indicate the correct direction. My heart raced as I continued to turn, a never ending wall of concrete, my fingers scraping along until I had made the full circle twice.
“I’m trapped! Oh fuck! There’s just wall, help me!” Tears of desperation were streaking like racecars down my cheeks, their salty tracks making their way to chapped lips as I pounded my fists against the walls surrounding me.
“Kaelin! Where are you?!” I could feel my chest heaving with barely suppressed sobs, spinning around and around again, searching for some hidden break in the wall, my fingers scraping savagely against the impregnable barrier. “Kaelin, stop! Stop!”
Hands were once again on my shoulders, shaking roughly, my fingers instantly stilled as my eyes snapped open, laced with fear. He was sitting above me, his brow furrowed in some unreadable expression, a small bloody scratch visible on his cheek. Reaching down, he scooped me up into his arms; I suddenly realized I was not asleep on the couch. I was in the basement. On the floor; the concrete floor.
“Jesus Christ…” He muttered, more to himself than me as he carried my still shaking body up the stairs, my tears having seen no reason to slow themselves, continued to stream down my cheeks, my teeth chattering in time with the shaking. Setting me down gingerly onto the couch, the leather a warm welcome in comparison to the concrete. Quickly covering my quaking body with a blanket, he gathered me up into his arms, pulling me into warmth I found I delighted in, my eyes slipping closed in relief.
“What the fuck were you doing in the basement?!” My eyes snapped open at his tone; he was angry.
“I don’t know…” My lips pressed against his shirt meant the words were barely discernable, but I hoped he’d caught them. An exasperated sigh escaped his lips as his hands rubbed furiously down my arms, sending fiery shocks up and down my small limbs.
“The door was locked, Kaelin. I locked it before I left.” I tied to snuggle closer to his warmth, my eyes heavy again, when he pulled me away, searching my face. “How did you get down there?” I missed his warmth, missed his arms running up and down my arms, even through the thick blanket, but I knew he expected an answer. My tears had slowed, soft hiccoughs replacing the violent sobs that had racked my body earlier.
“I really don’t know…I fell asleep on the couch, I – the next thing I remember is you waking me up…” Again his eyebrows furrowed, creasing bit of forehead that was visible beneath his dark mop of hair, dots of incredulity drawn among the hazel. Without a word he pulled me back against him, and I relished in the fact that he didn’t hate me. It didn’t seem that any sort of punishment would follow, but I thought it best to seal the deal.
“I’m sorry Frankie…” I felt him nod against the top of my head, burrowing myself deeper into his chest, my tired eyes resting as I felt his strong arms surrounding me.
