As Tara and I walked to school, thoughts of my mother flooded threw my mind. The stories of how she and my father met, when she gave birth to me and the day that she died… I was so young when it happened, I remember nothing of them. I remember my grandmother finally telling me how they died, explaining to me how they were in a grave car accident that killed both of them. It happened 3 days after I was born. I would have been in the car with them if it hadn’t been for the doctors believing that I was sick and wanting them to go and get some essentials for me. Once they died my grandmother took custody of me and moved us across seas to a small town in Florida called Sunshine Acres.

I snapped back to reality when I noticed Tara had stop in front of me and was turning so that she was facing me. “I can’t believe that I almost forgot to give this to you!” she looked down at her purple side bag and reached into it, her blond hair falling in front of her eyes. She finally pulled out a small black box with the number 16 placed into the bottom left corner stitched with a dark red. I looked up into her brown eyes that were now sparkling with anticipation “Happy birthday!” she yelled out before I could say anything to her. She pushed the small box into my hands; I reacted automatically by taking the box from her and just looking at it.

Something about this small box scared me. It made me want to scream and run away as fast as my feet would carry me, never looking back to see the horrid thing that lay in my hands.

“Maria?” my friend whispered my name.

“Oh.” I laughed as I looked up into her eyes to find them filled with fear and confusion. “Thank you Tara, you really shouldn’t have!” I walked the small distance to go and hug her.

She pulled away from my embrace and looked at me once again. “Well why don’t you open it!”

My hand shook as it made contact with the cold lid, it slowly slid down to the latch that was keeping the box closed and opened it. My eyes squeezed shut as I waited for something, anything to happen to me. When seconds passed and nothing happened I took the chance to open my eyes and look at what laid before me.

I managed to subside a small gasp that wanted to leave my lips when I took in the shape that lay before me. I small necklace charm in the shape of a black rose lay in the middle of the box, the pedals just opened enough to see a small red jewel laying delicately in the middle of the beautiful charm.

Something snapped inside my head as I established what must have scared me. “I-I’ve seen this before…” I could only manage a whisper as I looked at the rose: not able to tear my gaze away from it.

“WHAT really?” Tara looked down at the sidewalk, twisting her foot back and forth as her hands went behind her back. “That’s really weird because I found it hours outside of town in a run down shop that was going out of business.” The sadness in her voice was almost too much to bare.

“But I love it!” I yelled out to her causing her to jump as I squeezed her shoulders with another embrace. “it truly is beautiful, thank you Tara!”

Something was still racking my brain as I held my friend in a tight embrace. What was it about this harmless charm that scared me so much? The bigger question was how in gods name have I ever seen it before!?

Before I could ponder anymore about the item my legs buckled then gave out as my eyes fluttered shut and my arms fell from around my friends shoulders. I was soon embraced in the warmth of complete darkness.

I was walking down a red hallway, towards a beautiful gold door. The closer I got to the door the easier it was to make out a figure standing right in front of it.
*]
[*“Hello?” I called out to the person, but there was no response. not even the slightest turn of there head to at least show that they knew I was standing there.

*]
[*When I was close enough to see the person, I gasped at how gorgeous the man in front of me was. Tears tainted his flawless skin as he laid his hand against the door, saying something to the person who must be standing on the other side. He soon let his head fall against the wooden door in front of him, new tears rolling down his face.

*]
[*The mans face turned into fear as he started yelling something threw the door. He kept screaming the same thing over and over, yet I was just to far away to hear it.

*]
[*I was now running towards him trying to hear what it was that he was saying. I wanted to help! When I was close enough to hear him the word he was saying shocked me.

“Maria!” I could hear her scream my name; my eyes were to heavy to open and my body felt like I had run a marathon. All I wanted to do was lay there and fall asleep again so that I could let the darkness embrace my body and let it lull me into a blissful sleep that I would never emerge from.

“Her body is in shock. She should have her hearing back by now, just not the control over her body’s function.” It was a male voice that spoke to my friend in a soothing tone. He sounded so sure of what he was saying that even I believed the mystery man. Something about the mans voice reminded me of someone, I just couldn’t place my finger on who it was.

I could hear movement from just in front of me then someone walk beside me and placed a soft hand on my shoulder. The person leaned into me and whispered into my ear. “Maria, wake up.” My eyes shot open when I small shiver ran down my spine and spread out to the rest of my body. hearing the mans husky voice whisper in my ear was like having my body set aflame.

When I soon realized I was laying down on the ground, someone’s coat beneath my head: I sat up, earning myself a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that made me throw myself forward even more, the pain growing even more worse then before. A hand moved to my shoulder and pushed me back down to the ground so that my head was laying back on the pillow-coat.

“Hey, just lay back down and try to breath.” When I looked up to see the mystery man my breath hitched and I couldn’t help but just stare at him: the man from my dream, the one that had been crying. So that’s how I knew the voice, it was his.

“MARIA!” my best friend screamed at me running over and falling to her knees so that she could hug me. I moved my hand so that I was rubbing her back in a less then comfortable motion.

‘It’s not like I’m dying or anything, so what’s her problem?’ my thoughts were interrupted when I could start to feel hot tears fall onto my shoulder as my friends body shake with sobs every time she tried to take short shaky breaths. “Tara, I'm fine! Really, I guess I’m just tired.” I tried to sooth her sobs, slowly patting her on her back again.

“Maria, I was so scared! I was about to call 911 when Darien here came and told me he knew how to fix this. It was so weird like a dream, I was just sitting here trying to shake you so that you would awake up, when he showed up out of nowhere and told me that he new exactly how to fix this!” When she finished talking she was practically hyperventilating her eyes blood shot and her nose running.

I took my friends hair and pulled her ear close to my mouth, sneaking a glance at the man who was smiling at me. “You didn’t let him touch me did you?” a loud laugh escaped her mouth as she yelled no to me. Slapping me lightly in the shoulder

“Miss?” I looked over at the gorgeous man standing before me, his hands running threw his dark brown hair. “I don’t mean to interrupt, but I would never desecrate a woman no matter how beautiful she was.” His voice made my blood boil in excitement. I could only manage a nod before a wave of pain washed over my body and I had to rap my arms around my waist to keep from screaming out in pain.

“Shit, I forgot!” Darien kneeled before me and put the back of his hand to my forehead. “Tara.” Tara nodded at him like she understood his unspoken words. he turned to look at me. “I need to get you home fast. Tara go to school, tell you teacher that Maria went home sick and that she wont be able to attend school for the rest of the week.”

“WHAT, I cant miss that much scho-“Darien cut my off with a loud shush making me have to bite my tong so that I wouldn’t spit out a sassy remark.

“Tara! Don’t let this crazy guy take me home, we don’t even know him and yet your acting like you’ve known him all your life!” I yelled at her when she turned to walk away from me and the strange man sitting beside me.

“ Maria, I cant explain to you why I trust this man but you are going to have to trust me when I say that he will help you much more then any doctor could. He truly knows what’s going on with you right now and he will explain all of this to you in do time. For now just get home and try to rest. I will see you vary soon and will also try to help and explain to you what’s happening.” With that my friend turned and left. Once she was around the corner Darien turned and looked at me.

“Can you walk?” he took my hand and pulled me to my feet, his brown eyes looked me over obviously waiting for something to happen. I looked up at him and couldn’t help feel safe.

“I think I can manage. thanks” I spat out at him. Once the words had left my mouth I couldn’t help but wish I had kept the snide remark to myself. “I’m so sorry!”

“Don’t worry about it.” He waved his hand like he was waving off the rude words that I had just spoken to him. “ you have the right to wonder who I am and why I’m here. I just showed up ‘outa the blue acting like a good friend of yours.” He gave me a bright smile. “we really need to get you home, fast.” He started to pull me forward when my legs buckled and gave out. Just before I hit the ground he caught me and pulled me up into his arms: one hand under my legs holding onto my thigh the other behind my back keeping me elevated.

I couldn’t help the blush that washed over my face as he started to walk in the direction of my house.” How do you know what way my house is?” my eyes opened wide as I looked into his beautiful dark brown eyes, outlined with a thick line of black.

“Well lets put it this way, were on a one way street. You were heading the other way so you must have come from this way.” I smacked myself in the head once I realized the stupidity of my question. I watched another smile grow on his face as he let out a small laugh.

“AHG” I threw my hand around my waist again, as I cried out in pure pain. Darien’s smile faded into a worried look, his hands grasping my thighs even tighter then before.

I soon realized that the way he held me was so protective and so caring, the way I l let my head laid on his shoulder made my stomach twist and turn. It felt so right being in his arms like this, being so close to him. My hand moved to rest in the middle of his chest and I could hear his heart speed up. A small giggle escaped my lips before I could stop it. He looked down at me and gave me a confused glance.

“what is it?” the way his eyebrow scrunched up made my heart skip a beat.

“Your not going to have a heart attack are you, because I don’t think I can handle walking the rest of the way home right now.” He growled looking down at me, a small smile spread across my lips. I laughed even harder as I watched him look in the other direction as a blush starting to take over his features.

“How much farther is your house from here?” all the embarrassment washed off his face as he looked into the woods that laid just across the street from were we were walking.

“I believe its only about another 5 or so more minutes from here.” My voice came out as a whisper as I looked up at his now serious face.

“Crap, you have to be kidding me!” he stopped in his tracks and look down at me. “By the time we get there well only have like 5 minutes to leave and find somewhere to hide you!” he was now yelling so loud I had to cover my ears. His eyes were filled with hate and fury. When he finally finished yelling, I looked up at him and couldn’t help but wonder why me living so far away would make him this mad.

“Why would I have to leave and find somewhere to hide?” my head was starting to throb with all the confusion that he was causing me.

I watched as his face dropped into a scared expression but that soon changed when he looked at me. He gave me a boyish grin that made my stomach turn with excitement.

‘He’s so attractive!’ a small smile crossed over my lips as I looked up at his flawless face. The memory of my dream coming back to me in waves like a newly remembered memory soon it was replaced with another attack. This one causing pain to scorch threw my whole body.

He said some profanity that was to quiet for me to understand. Once he finished watching my eyes fill with pain he took a deep breath. “Someone is coming for you Maria. I will explain the rest to you once we arrive at your house. I have a car in the woods just a couple minutes from your house, when we get inside I need you to get all your cloths and get any other essentials, then we will be leaving.” He waited for a reply but when I didn’t say anything he just stared back at the woods, a loud exhale coming from his mouth. “ and I’m sorry for getting so upset. Its just that if anything was to happen to you, then I don’t know what I would do with myself.”

“Ok.” I finally said to him after what seemed like an hour of silence.

We walked for the remainder of the time before we finally came up to a beautiful 2 story home decorated with 2 windows on either side of the door as well as 4 windows on the second story. The house was made up of red assorted bricks and the roof was decorated with white shingles. The front yard held 2 flower beds and the very front of the sidewalk leading up to the door stood a beautiful black mailbox with the word Hawk written on the side in scarlet red. This was my home, the place were my only remanding family member lived: my grandmother.

“This is it.” I whispered looking up at my beautiful childhood home.

“Ya, I know it is.” He started walking towards the door.

‘wait, what? You got to be kidding me, the first hot guy iv met in months and he’s gotta be practically stalking me?’ I screamed in my head

“I can walk from here… I think.” He stopped to contemplate what I was saying to him then let go of my legs, carefully putting me onto the ground but keeping his hands protectively around my waist waiting for my legs to give out again.

“Ill be ok.” I put my hand to his chest and gave him a gentle push away so that I could walk into the house.

The pain that was moving threw my body never subsided but I pushed it to the back of my mind so that I could go grab my stuff and get ready to leave this life behind, and stay somewhere safe and most likely in the confinement of an unknown location.

“Darien can you start to explain all of this to me. You must know what’s going on with my body and you NEED to tell me why I have to leave my home to go to some remote island.” I know I was over exaggerating things but I really wasn’t in the mood to play games with him anymore. By now all I wanted to do was figure out what was going on and try to find a way to fix it. I was walking beside him towards the door, once we reached it he pulled me behind him and gave me a stern look that said ‘ wait here’ he walked in first, looking inside every room of the house and locking every window that he walked by. I was to tired to play anymore of his games so wile he “secured” the house, I walked up to my bedroom and sat on the bed waiting for him to finish. I knew that he was finished the moment I herd him let out a loud scream/yell of fury. The sound of his feet hitting the stairs on his way to my room were like the sound of elephants pounding there feet inside of my head.
He reached my room only moments later, his face bright red with worry and anger. I could tell by the way he was standing that I was about to get yelled at.

“I think my house is safe.” I said with the best jolly tone that I could muster up.

“That’s beside the point!” he yelled back at me, throwing his hands in the air. “ What if someone was waiting for you up in your room? Because I’m not there that means that he can take you without me knowing until its to late!” he yelled at me. I had to look down at my hands before the tears that grew in my eyes could be seen.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know whats going on and I don’t understand why you believe that there is going to be some bad guy waiting for me around every corner that we pass.” I said.

I herd him let out a defeated sigh and listened as his feet softly walked over to my bed. “ Can I sit here?” he said pointing down to the spot beside me.

“Ya, I guess.” He let his body fall onto the bed, making the bed frame shake.

After what seemed like house of us sitting in silence, he finally let out a loud sigh. “Tell me Maria, has anyone ever told you stories about Angels and Demons?” when I looked up and nodded at him he went on. “Well those were never stories, more so big parts of history that people tried to cover up with the legends of what they thought would help keep the secret of Angels and Demons from being known by every human in the world. The story is that once an angel and ogre or a demon and warlock mate they bare a child that is human, until that child turns 16th. That is when the child is given 2 powers from Zeus if born pure or Hades if born evil. They are also given there wings and the power of immortality.” I could see the corner of his mouth turn up into a subtle grin, barley noticeable if not for the way I was letting myself gawk at him in disbelief.

“So your telling me that I'm like an angel or something?” I knew that I sounded like a stupid blond the way that I was twirling my hair in my fingers and gazing at him with a confused expression.

“well, no. The problem is that if you had been born just an angel or just a demon then you wouldn’t be in so much danger.” My head was spinning and the pain in my stomach was growing uncontrollably painful.

“Darien, what are you trying to get at? Am I a demon or an Angel?” I placed a finger on my temples and added just enough pressure to subdue the pain pounding in my head.

“let me try to explain this better. Your father was one of Hades most worthy warlocks and your mother was one of Zeus’s most loved Angel. When the gods sent down Angels and Demons, they were to battle for the right over who got to control your world. Wile in the midst of battle your mother and father were pinned against each other. They fought against each other but knew that if they were able to strike the killing blow that they wouldn’t be able to. The moment they made eye contact on the battle field, they realized that they were in love with each other and that if anything were to happen to the other person that they would not be able to live with themselves. They were able to escape that battle unnoticed and fell madly in love with each other. They soon gave birth to a child. It was the first time in history that good and evil loved one another and bore a child.” He inched closer to me and placed a reassuring hand on my knee.

I sighed. ‘ great I know were this is going.’ Putting my hand up so that he would stop talking I took in a deep breath. “ and this child is-“ he cut me off before I could finish my sentence.

“You.” He waved the hand he didn’t have placed on my knee in front of my body referring to all of me and not just a part of me.

“So what does that make me?” I guess he saw that question coming because he placed a hand on my knee and looked me in the eyes.

“I don’t know. Neither does Hades or Zeus and that is why I was sent here to bring you back to the heavens and have Zeus evaluate you and your powers.”

“Is that were we are going?” in any other situation that would have sounded like the most idiotic question in the world but I knew it was the one thing I feared most about asking.

I could start to see the irritation grow on his face as his eyebrow twitched. “No, someone else is coming for you, the one Hades sent to retrieve you. For now we have to go and find a safe spot for you to stay until Dan is off our tracks. If we don’t wait then we could risk the chance of you getting caught and taken to Hades. Taking you to heaven can wait because only Zeus’s children know of the way to get in and if Hades were to find this path then that could lead to a war between the gods and I believe that Zeus really cant deal with that at the moment.”

“Ok.” Was all I could manage to say.

“Now that you have all you answers, can you get your things so that we can leave and get started on our long trip to hell knows were.” I laughed and got up from my bed taking his hand off of my leg and holding it in my hands, loving the feel of his skin against mine.

‘What is it about him that I love so much?’

He coughed to get my attention.

“Oh, I’m sorry!” I threw his hand away from mine like it had burned me and walked over to my closet to grab my suitcase then over to my dresser to throw in as many pairs of cloths as could fit, taking an outfit out of the suitcase and walking towards the bathroom.

“I have to get changed; can you grab whatever else you think ill need and put it in there for me?” I asked him pointing to the bag that laid on the ground in front of my bed.

“Yah, yah just please be fast. We need to get out of here soon. I can already sense 4 of them just on the outskirts of the forest. There will be many more on there way.” He got up from the bed and walked over to my make-up table, grabbing everything he could find and throwing it into the small bag beside the bed.

I laughed at his confused expression as he looked at my flat iron and my curling iron “Flat iron.” I said before tuning and walk into the bathroom. His next words stopped me in my tracks.

“Just please don’t freak out when you see yourself in the mirror. Ok?” I paused for a second then turned and entered the small bathroom. My mind racing with the possibilities of what I would see when I looked into my bathroom mirror
