Job Interview

In the morning, Aki had a job interview with the school paper place. She straightened up her dress suit in the bathroom.

“I can do this,” she said to herself. Aki took and deep breath and left the bathroom. She walked past Mark sitting on the couch.

“Good luck!” he shouted. Aki waved as she walked out the door.

------

Five minutes before ten, Aki made it to the newspaper place. Looking at the glass doors made her feel so tiny. She took in breath as she stood up straight.I can’t turn back. I can’t turn back! Aki clenched her fists and walked up to the glass doors. The cool breeze did little to calm her down as she walked inside. A blonde-haired receptionist looked up from her phone call.

“Good morning, may I help you?” she asked. Aki pressed her hands against the desktop.

“I am here for the ten o’clock interview,” she said.

“Ah, I see,” the receptionist said. “Please take a seat over there.”

“Thank you.” Aki bowed and sat on the couch on the other side of the room. As she waited, she went over her answers in her head. The woman clenched her fists.I can do this! Her eyes shifted to the ticking clock on the wall next to the door across the room. Aki pressed her lips together. I will not back down! She lifted her head when she heard the door open.

“Kimoto Aki?” a woman asked, poking her head out from the crack. Aki jumped to her feet.

“Yes!” she shouted.

“Follow me,” the woman said. Aki followed her into the room.

“Please state your name.”

“Kimoto Aki.”

“State your purpose.”

“I want to work for the school paper.”

“As a writer?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“May I ask we you want to work with us?”

“I love to write and view this job would be perfect for me.”

“Why would it be perfect for you?”

“Well, I love to write.”

“How many years of experience do you have?”

“I have been writing since I was five.”

“Professionally?”

“Not really.”

“So this is your first time working?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“I see. What do you believe you can bring to this newspaper?”

“Hard work, ambition, creativity, and spunk?”

“Spunk?”

“Yes.”

“Spunk?”

“Yes.”

“Are you willing to come in even when it’s not your shift?”

“Yes.”

“Are you willing to follow our no tolerance for drug policy?”

“Yes.”

“How are you with a word processor?”

“Really good!”

“Can you mentor new workers?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Can you take time to answer mail and edit the stories of others?”

“Yes and yes.”

“Okay. Everyone’s looks good so far on your resume. Do you have any clues?”

“What are you looking for in your employees?”

“Someone who is going to take the job seriously. Too many freshmen come in through here and slack off. I take this paper seriously.”

“I understand.”

“Any other questions?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Okay, that is all for now. We will be in touch, Kimoto-san.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

Both women bowed before they parted ways.

Aki doesn’t know if she got the job or not. She would have to wait and see.
