Well if a fan fic is to start at any point in canon then Ron has to start as an ass, doesn't he? For someone at least reasonably good at chess, where forethought is the key to the game, he shows remarkably little of it. He is ruled by his insecurities, from his reactions to Hermione in SS, Crookshanks in PoA, and the Goblet of Fire, through his using Lavender as a training aid in HBP, to his running out in DH. Rons lashes out because of his insecurities.

And Ginny is indeed a blank slate that can be easily taken in any direction a writer wants to go.

Hermione is smart but still with all the issues of a teenager, especially in HBP. Quite realistically pertrayed overall.
