Most attempts to rewrite canon are self congratulatory, boring and begin to sound alike. Despite my growing dislike for the direction HP fan fiction is taking your story intrigues me.
Keep it unique and don't succumb to the simplistic character bashing lazy writers seem to find enjoyable.
