It's possible I missed it but Shouldn't Hermione check her family history. Given Dan's grandmother was a implied to be a squib there is a possibility she could inherit from his family.
Other than that plot point nice work. The explanation of the tower could have been clearer or perhaps I could have been smarter not sure which.
