I really, really like idea one just because it gives you a lot of emotion to work with. I honestly love when writers can pull off stories like that and make you truly feel the story. I know it's sad and sometimes awful to write but when there is a point, and a lot of powerful emotion then it's all worth it.
Number two sounds interesting as well.
