I knew it wasn't Sirius that attacked Harry's Dad; he would have been greatful to the man for taking Harry in and raising him. I think he was just in the right place at the right time and was probably just following him to try and get in with him so he'd be taken home and be with Harry as a dog, if nothing else. At least until he could figure out how to tell Harry and his partens what was going on. But without a wand, how could Sirius prove he was a Wizard? Humm...that's a bit of a problem.....
By the way, what DID he do to the Dursleys????
