The cup burst, shattered with the sound of thin branches snapping under the weight of winter. Eyeing the damage done Leon thought of his mother, she never could get him to hold his teacup correctly.
Shivers of pain as D took Leon's hand in his own, plucked from the skin between Leon's thumb and forefinger a pearlescent shard.
D lifted the hand, examined it with eyes, with the pale point of his tongue that quickly slipped back into his mouth to savor the bright red jewel.
"Be careful, Detective," D said, noting Leon's pulse, his quickening breath, "the China bites."
