I got out of the car and into the elementary school. Many kids where standing in the halls talking to their friends, excited to see them again after the vacations that just ended. Everybody was excited to see each other, except me. I didn't have any friends, none to talk to. I kept walking down the hall and finally found the third grade door. I came in and saw that it was empty, except for a think brown-haired boy drawing in a desk in the back. I sat down next to him, hoping he would at least say hi to me, since nobody ever talked to me. He didn't even turn to see me.
'Of course he doesn't want to talk to you William. None likes you.' I said to myself in my mind. I hate the first day of school.
It was now recess time and I was sitting by myself on a swing. I heard steps coming towards me and saw Jason and his friends coming directly to me. They were fourth graders and always bothered me.
"Hey Beckett, my friend here wants to sit in that swing, I know you don't mind." He said with a smirk. Of course he knew I did mind.
"But there are other swings over there." I answered him, not making eye contact but just looking at the floor. Next thing I knew was being shoved into the ground and Jason and his three friends where punching me in the ground. I begged them to stop, but they didn't.
"Hey, leave him alone!" I heard someone call from far, and suddenly the kinds stopped hitting me. I looked up, only to see another kid hitting the boys that where bothering me. The kids left, and the boy that helped me came to me and helped me get up.
"Thank you." I told him.
"You're welcome. Come on, I'll help you get to the nurse's office, you're bleeding." He helped me walk into the school.
"What's your name?" I asked him.
"Gabriel Saporta." He answered with a smile. Why was this boy helping me anyway?
"And what's yours?"
"William Beckett." I answered.
"Hmm...William is a long name. I'll call you...Bill. Only if that's okay with you." He said.
"No, It's okay. I like it. Then I will call you...Gabe." I said with a smile. He smiled back and said he liked his new name.
"Why did you help me, and you're still helping me now?" I asked curious.
Gabe shrugged. "Because it looked like you needed help. Besides, I think you need a friend. I don't have any friends, so I wanted to know, if you would be my friend?" He looked at me with a pleading look. I was very happy to finally find a friend.
"Yes!" I exclaimed excited. Gabe smiled and we started laughing.
I got to my house and looked for my mom in the kitchen. I was excited to tell her about my new friend. Before leaving, Gabe and I had exchanged phone numbers.
My mom was cooking dinner, and when she saw me she sat down on the table along with me to discuss my first day of school.
"I made a new friend mommy." I said with a huge smile. She seemed excited too.
"Really William? I'm so happy for you. What's his name?"
"Gabe. Can he come to the house mommy. Please." I begged.
"Sure. I'll put another plate on the table for dinner. Tell him to come have dinner with us." She said, and stood up to continue cooking. I thanked her and ran to the living room and jumped on the couch. I grabbed the phone from the coffee table and pulled out the piece of paper where he had written the number. I dialed it and waited. Then a woman answered.
"Hello. Is Gabriel there?"
"Yes. Hold on a second. Gabriel! phone!"
Noises where heard on the background and then Gabe picked up.
"Hello?"
"Hi Gabe, it's Bill."
"Oh hi. Why you calling?"
"I just wanted to know if you wanted to come to my house for dinner."
"Oh. Wait. Let me ask my mom."
I waited some time, and then he picked up again.
"My mom said yes, but she wants to talk to your mom."
"Okay."
I got up and ran to the kitchen handing the phone to my mom.
"Mom. Gabe's mom wants to talk to you."
My mom got the phone and I stood there expectantly to see what she said. Mom hung the phone.
"She said she will bring him in about twenty minutes."
I jumped and gave her a hug. I finally had a real friend.
I was sitting on the couch watching t.v. when the door bell rang. I hurried up to the door and when I opened it, I saw Gabe and his mom standing there. My mom stood behind me and said hi to Gabe's mom.
"Hi Gabe." I said with a smile.
"Gabe? Your name is Gabriel." His mom said with a confused look.
"But he calls me Gabe." He pointed to me.
"And he calls me Bill." I pointed to him.
Our moms smiled and Gabe came in.
"Hey Bill, I brought some movies and videogames." He said showing me his backpack.
We played video games, and then we had dinner. After that we watched a movie and then we went to my backyard and laid on the grass, looking at the stars.
"You know Gabe, you are the first boy ever to be my friend." I told him.
"And you are my first friend too." He answered. Both of us never looking away from the stars.
"Best friends forever." Gabe said turning to me.
"Yeah, best friends forever." I said with a smile, and looked back up at the stars.
