When The Day Met The Night
I watched the scene unfold in front of me with a small smile planted on my face. Everything had gone just as I expected. When Kevin had entered the bar, I had simply put it off as luck of seeing an old school mate. Then he sat down in Allie’s seat. The plan was formulated the moment his bottom hit the seat. I like to think of it as a stroke of brilliance.
I’m usually not one to match make. Being a bartender I witness awkward blind dates, and hear stories of dates gone wrong all on account of match making. Under normal circumstances those would have been enough to drive me away from the sport. But with the opportunity displayed in front of me so blatantly, who could resist?
My actions were not all selfish though. Allie had been in a funk. It was obvious to anyone who spent more than one day with the girl. I had tried all of my usually funk-breaking methods. I tried to make her go out dancing, I hosted a girly sleepover with some of our other friends, I even took her to see a Hugh Grant marathon at the local theater. And through all of that Allie still refused to be happy. And if Hugh Grant can’t make a girl happy nothing in the world could.
As much as I hated to admit it, I knew that it was a man, or lack thereof, that put my friend in such a rut. Allie refused to admit it of course. She couldn’t be blamed for that fact though. If it wasn’t sad enough not to have a boyfriend, admitting that you were upset at not having a boyfriend was full out humiliating, especially to a girl like Allie. She was one of those girls who considered herself as independent, and for the most part she was. She made good money on her own, and she had a decent apartment. But she wasn’t happy.
So, when I saw another lonely soul sitting at my bar, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like if I brought those souls together. I didn’t hold out hope that they would fall in love. No, that was very unlikely. But, maybe for one night, they would find comfort in one another and come out with something positive. It didn’t hurt that he was attractive either. If worse came to worse, Allie would have a good night shagging a hot guy. That was always a good way to boost confidence.
The process was slow at first. Allie was not very happy at the fact that he had stolen her seat, but she came around to him pretty quickly. My glares might have slightly speeded it along. But soon they were drinking and talking as if they had known each other forever. They even danced a couple of times. Besides their awful dancing skills, they seemed to have tons in common.
Physically they were around the same size. Allie was a little shorter at 5’6 to his 5’8. Her hair was a long brown trestle of waves. She always complained about her hair. She would say that she wished it would make up its mind about whether it wanted to be straight of curly, but always find myself envying her hair. I was the plain blonde with split ends, while she looked like an exotic goddess. The thing that struck me so similar about the two of them was their eyes. They both had big bright eyes that just seemed to light up when they looked at each other.
They left around 12:30, both with large grins plastered on their faces. I felt very satisfied. My friend was happy. My old school mate was happy. And my boss was even happier to know that a celebrity had been in the bar. I had gone home at my usual time at a little after two and settled into a nice sleep. Sadly, as with most good things, it didn’t last. At a little after nine I awoke to the wonderful sound of my phone.
“ I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want, so tell me what you want, what you really really want, Iwanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna…” The familiar sound of the Spice Girls song rang out in my otherwise silent apartment. Irritated I picked the blasted thing up wanting to kill whomever was calling, but those thoughts were quickly thrown out of my head when I saw who was calling.
“Hey Al” I said tiredly sitting up in my bed with my phone firmly pressed against my ear. I could immediately tell something was wrong. Allie’s breathing came over the phone as short and shallow, which usually meant that she was crying.
“I need you to pick me up, now.” She whispered hurriedly. I didn’t even need time to think about it.
“Of course, where are you?” I heard a sigh of relief come from the other end of the line. She was obviously distressed. I jumped out of bed phone still in hand. I didn’t bother to look at my appearance as I threw on a light jacket and grabbed my keys, before hurrying out the door.
“I’m at the Chateau de Luxe. You know the really tall hotel downtown? I don’t really know what room I’m in, but…” she whispered, but I cut her off.
“Allie, please tell me the truth are you in trouble? What happened last night? Why are you whispering?” My heart was beating rapidly. This was my fault, all my fault. I had silently manipulated her into going off with a guy I barely knew. He could have done God knows what to her, and it was my fault, my responsibility.
“It depends on your definition of trouble.” She responded as I jumped into my car quickly taking off down the road. I wasn’t going the speed limit, but fuck it. If I got pulled over I would tell the truth; my friend was in trouble.
“Is it life threatening? Are you hurt in any way?” I held my breath for her response, my heart still beating at a rapid pace. My apartment was not too far from downtown, and depending on traffic, I could be there within minutes.
“No, it’s nothing like that.” She said quickly as if she knew about my distress. “Meredith, last night I… well I made a mistake; a really REALLY big mistake.” She sounded as if she was going to cry, and my heart contracted painfully. Guilt was eating me from the inside out. I pulled up to the pricey hotel, quickly jumping up out of my car and shoving my keys to the valet’s hands.
“Shhh… calm down I’m here. Do you want to come down to the lobby, or do you want me to come find you?” I asked soothingly. I hoped she would come down to me. I was never really the best at hide and go seek, so I figured it would be nearly impossible for me to find such a small girl in an unidentifiable room in a hotel with hundreds of those.
“No… um… I’m not really decent… hold on… I’ll find out the room number.” I heard a lot of shifting and a door creek open. I heard a lot of yelling, but could make out what they were yelling about. If I hadn’t been scared before I was now. I heard Allie’s small voice ask what the room number was, and all the yelling stopped. There was a short response that I couldn’t decipher, more shifting, and then Allie began to speak again. “It’s room 904. I’ll see ya when you get up here.” And the line fell dead.
I ran like a woman possessed. I crammed myself into the first elevator going up and pressed the button that read nine. I tapped my foot impatiently making the Japanese tourists, who I shared the elevator with, stare at me as if I was crazy. I let out a small exclamation of ‘finally’ when the doors finally slid open to the ninth floor. I saw the door for ‘904’ clearly and upon arrival in front of it started banging away on it as if I were a banshee.
“What!” the doors came crashing open making me jump back slightly, and revealing a boy who looked to be about 16. I disregarded him and pushed past him into the rather grand room. I saw Kevin sitting on the bed, and another man who looked slightly younger than me pacing, but I didn’t see Allie anywhere.
“Where is she?!” I demanded stomping my foot stubbornly. All three boys looked equally shocked and confused. I heard a door to my left squeak open, and turned to see Allie standing there in nothing but a sheet. I immediately launched onto her in a huge hug.
“Meredith!” she exclaimed obviously surprised at the sudden weight that was put onto her from my hug. I felt tears rise to my eyes as I finally realized you’re ok.
“Allie! I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have let you go off last night. I’m an awful friend! How could I? You were SO drunk, and I just let you go traipsing off! Can you ever forgive me? When you called I thought you had been raped, or were lying in a ditch dead!” I knew I was gushing, but there was no stopping me now.
“If she was dead how would she be able to call you?” The taller of the two boys standing up asked. Both Allie and I glared at him, and the shorter one elbowed him in the ribs while muttering “Shut up, Joe.”
“Meredith, you need to calm down. I’m fine. I just need to find my clothes and get home. I can tell you then and…” But I wasn’t having any of that. After all the worrying and the guilt I subjected myself to too get here, I wanted some answers.
“No, Allie. Please, I want to know what’s going on. I can help fix it. You’re a smart girl; you couldn’t have done anything that stupid. I mean it can’t be that bad can it?” I asked. Allie hung her head, as if ashamed. I turned to Kevin who was running his hands through his hair as if stressed. “It can’t be THAT bad?” I repeated again. Again, no one answered. I threw my hands up in the air exasperated. “For Pete’s sake will someone just tell me what the fuck is going on here?”
“I believe I can clear this up.” The man called Joe said, answering my question. “These two idiots went and got themselves married.” I was floored. That was not what I expected. I turned towards Allie to see if what he was saying was true. She only nodded her head solemnly. I couldn’t speak.
“Meredith…” she started before trailing off. “Please… Can you please just say something?” she pleaded, her eyes now welling up with tears.
“Allie… Do you even realize what you’ve done?” She looked at me questioningly with a bit of hurt in her eyes. She must have thought that I would have just immediately whisked her away from this room, and she would never have to worry about this again. Sad to say, but she was in for a rude awakening. “Allie, you just married a Jonas Brother.”
