Chapter 1
Flashback
Corey sat at his kitchen table drinking his first coffee of the day. He shot an annoyed glare at his cell phone as it began to vibrate across the table, figuring it was a text from Joey he ignored it. He sighed when it continued to vibrate and grabbed it before it fell; he flipped it open; the screen read Des Moines Disorder Clinic. Confused he answered the call “Hello?”
‘Good morning Mr. Taylor. I’m sorry if I caught you at a bad time but your presence is needed here. We have some bad news for you’
“I’ll be right there” he closed the phone and sat there, he didn’t know anyone at the clinic; he knew Joey had been in and out of the clinic for a few years but he been clean for almost a year now. Corey suddenly became very worried about the young drummer. He grabbed his phone again and dialed Joey’s number as quickly as possible.
‘Hello’ Joey’s groggy voice came from the other end
“Dude, are you ok?”
‘I’m fine man, what the fuck?’
“Sorry just got a little worried when Des Moines Disorder Clinic called and said I needed to go down there ‘cause they had bad new for me”
‘Isn’t me man, I’ve been clean for just about a year’
“I know, sorry about waking you up. See you later”
‘Bye’ Corey closed his phone and headed out of the house and into his car.
End of flash back
That had been almost a month ago and so far Corey had been able to keep it a secret but today was the day he was going to let the rest of the guys in on it. He was surprised he’d been able to go this long with out just blurting it out, it was stressful doing this on his own, though he’d talked to Joey a lot more about his disorder. There was a knock on his front door, he sighed and walked towards it. He opened it and found 8 fully grown men; looking more confused then he’d ever seen them in the years he’d known them. He told them to wait in the living room while he finished in the kitchen. He grabbed what he’d been doing and walked up the stairs to the second floor. He opened a bedroom door close to his own room and walked in. He looked towards the bed, her dull red hair pooled around her head; her body was sickly thin and fragile looking. He closed his eyes and lightly shook her shoulder; it looked so small in his hand, he tried not to let the emotion he was feeling get the best of him. Her blue eyes looked sadly up at him, he helped her sit up and handed her the glass she leaned against him; he could feel all her bones pressed against him, he gently put his arm around her and put his head on hers. “Corey?” she said quietly
“Shaena” he said matching her tone
“Thanks, for everything” she said looking up at him. He kissed her forehead
“You’re my little sister, I’d risk my life for you” she smiled, “I gotta go back down stairs I’m sure the guys are having a panic attack by now”
“Your really going to tell them, aren’t you”
“I have to, I can’t keep the secret much longer” she nodded “I’ll come get you once they know k?” she nodded again and lay back down. All she did was sleep it seemed, he walked out her door and back downstairs. He was met by the sound of 8 men talking over each other as he suspected trying to figure out why they were here. He walked into the room and all 8 silenced and turned their attention to their friend and band mate. Corey sighed while Joey eyed him cautiously he’d never seen Corey act like this.
“Corey, can I talk to you for a second” he asked quickly. Corey looked up relieved, Joey ushered the older man into the hallway. “Corey, what’s wrong with you, I’ve never seen you act like this”
“I can’t keep this from you guys anymore”
“Keep what from us?”
“You know that day the Disorder Clinic called me?”
“Yah, woke me up for nothing”
“Sorry, well when I got there I was taken to this room and I started getting really nervous and some guy came in and began talking to me” he paused “I finally got pissed and asked why the fuck I was there. He stood up and walked over too me and told me my parents were dead” Joey’s jaw dropped “oh it gets better. He then told me I had to take care of my sister, which I wasn’t even aware I had till then. Turns out she’d lived at the clinic for a while cause she’s like severely anorexic. So yah now I have to plan a funeral and take care of her and I can’t do it alone anymore” Joey looked at Corey, he could see the stress on his friends face.
“I’ll tell them if you want, you go have a shower or something and just relax for a bit” Corey nodded and thanked Joey then turned and walked back upstairs. Joey turned back to the living room and began explaining the situation to the others. They were just as shocked as Joey had been, Joey quickly ushered the others out of the house and explained that Corey needed so time to just relax and that he’d help take care of Corey’s sister. They agreed and left quietly, Joey walked upstairs and listened to the water from the shower turn off, he leaned against the wall and waited for Corey to emerge. It wasn’t long before Corey’s long wet red hair emerged from the door “I told the others, they send their apologies and such. Also I made them go home I’ll stay here and help take care of your sister as I know what it’s like and then you can relax and take care of the arrangements” Joey suddenly found himself being hugged by the older man, Joey patted Corey’s back and waited to breath again. Corey released the smaller man and stepped back
“I owe you for this Joe”
“You don’t owe me anything this is for making me go to the clinic when I refused” he said laughing. Corey smiled and walked over to a door Joey was sure he’d never seen used in the entire time Corey had owned the house, he watched Corey open the door and walk in; he decided it was the best if he fallowed. He stood behind Corey’s massive frame and tried to see in the room; Corey suddenly moved and exposed a tiny woman sitting in front of a mirror. He knew exactly what she was doing he’d done it him self. They walked in a little farther as she turned towards them, he could see the effects it had on her body her arms and legs were the size of toothpicks and her facial features her sunken in. she was very beautiful, but very sick
“Hello Joey” she said in her quiet voice
“Hey” he said, he felt like he was back in high school and had just spotted a hot cheerleader
“Joe this is Shaena, Shay this is Joey” they nodded towards each other. Corey looked between his sister and his best friend, he knew that look on Joey’s face. “Shay, Joey’s here to help you”
“If you’ll let me” Joey added
“I’d be more then happy to let you help, I don’t want to live like this anymore. I’m tired of relying on others to live through the day” she said sadly. Joey knew exactly how she felt
