Evelyn lay on her bed, curled on her side, absently rubbing her belly with one hand. The conversation she'd just had with Brendon circulated around her head. The rest of Panic at the Disco now thought she was some slut he fancied enough to travel half way around the world to see. Great. Imagine when news eventually comes out about the baby. What then - is she meant to sit back and let people say nasty things about her and her baby - Brendon's baby? Would he defend them, or would he pretend like it was all Evelyn's doing?
Irrational thoughts kept pouring through her mind after that, making her sadder and furious at the same time. And all because he won't tell his friends the truth!
"Ev? Can I come in?" Brendon asked through the door, his voice soft and apologetic.
Evelyn remained silent. Brendon began to tap lightly on the door.
"I know you're awake, Ev. I really, really need to talk to you - like right now."
Evelyn let out a sigh and sat up slowly.
"Fine, come in then," she called out. She reached back to re-arrange the pillows behind her.
After a moments hesitation, Brendon sheepishly opened the door and stepped into the room. He stood awkward just inside the door, his hands in his pockets and his shoulders slumped forward.
"God, I'm so sorry Ev. I've screwed up majorly," he began, moving up to the bed to sit gingerly on the end.
"No shit. Look - if you don't want anything to do with the baby, you can tell me. Just don't go giving me spiels about how you're wanting to, then go backing right off cause its 'too hard' or you're scared or whatever. We'll always be friends Brendon, so if that's what you're worried about you're wasting precious energy. Oh my God am I even making sense?" Evelyn cradled her head in her hands in frustration. It's so hard to think when he's staring at you with pleading eyes!
He flashed her a half smile.
"Yeah, I think I understand. I am telling you full blown truth when I say that I, Brendon Urie, want to be there for you and the baby. I'll tell the guys too, I promise." There was a look of acceptance mixed with stubbornness in his eyes.
Unsure of the reasons why, Evelyn's eyes suddenly filled with tears. She turned her face away, refusing to let him see her cry. He reached out, cupping her chin gently with his hands and turned her head to face him.
Her eyes struggled to avoid his, but the deep brown pools were just too tempting. With a sinking heart, Evelyn realised she was starting to feel very strongly towards this man, and she would probably never have the courage to tell him.
"Why are you crying, Ev?" he asked softly, staring straight into her blue eyes.
More tears began to cascade down Evelyn's cheeks against her will.
"I'm not," she blubbered, pulling her chin from his hand. She turned away again, swiftly wiping her eyes while she struggled to regain her composure.
"I think your tears betray you," he chided, moving closer to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. She let out a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob.
"Yeah, never was a good liar," she muttered, regaining control over her tears. She turned back to face him.
"Obviously." There was a small smile playing over his lips as he reached out to take up her hands in his. "Spill."
"No way," she said clearly, shaking her head. He perked an eyebrow up at her.
"Yes way. I want to know all your secrets," he said in an accent. "You just said we're friends, right? "
"Yeah but - this is...well.. more than just a secret. This is a weapon of mass destruction. One I'm not going to just hand over to you."
"Aww, come on Ev. It's not like you love me or something," he kidded, trying to lighten her mood.
Evelyn looked away uncomfortably, then realised her error too late. Brendon laughed.
"No way!" he exclaimed, dropping her hands as Evelyn pulled them back quickly.
"Yep, no way. This isn't something I want to talk to you about," she said seriously, meeting his curious gaze once more. He locked his eyes on hers steadily, almost daring her to look away.
"Are you sure?"
"Damn straight I'm sure."
The staring contest continued for a few more moments, until the prodding in her tummy made her look down. Brendon's gaze dropped too, and for a moment they just watched the baby's movements.
"That has to be the most scary thing I've ever seen." Brendon suddenly said. Evelyn grinned.
"You should feel it. Fully blows your mind," Evelyn replied, looking up to see his expression. She wasn't disappointed by the look of awe mixed with a hint of disbelief. Her mouth softened. She reached out and grabbed his hand, placing it where the tiny child was kicking. He glanced up at her, the disbelief giving way to the overwhelming awe. He let out a little laugh, his face glowing.
Evelyn sat back comfortably on her pillows, watching as Brendon became more comfortable with the tiny life jabbing away inside her with a half sleepy, half teary look on her face.
Eventually, the baby stopped responding to his hands and seemingly fell asleep.
“I’ve been such an ass,” Brendon muttered, taking his hands off Evelyn’s stomach and moving up to lay beside her.
“Yeah..” she agreed. Brendon grunted.
“It’s kind of weird, all of this. I never really wanted anything from you, I didn’t want to be with you and even though we…you know.. I never really wanted you, you know?”
“And now?” Brendon asked, his voice catching his throat. Evelyn laughed softly.
“Now.. With these hormones racing through my veins, I’m deprived enough to want anyone.” She looked him straight in the eye then; challenging him, and Brendon’s jaw dropped.
“Evelyn! I don’t think that’s a good idea. I mean, look at the mess we’re already in.”
Evelyn burst out with laughter. “Scared you’d knock me up, Brendon?” She continued to laugh uncontrollably.
“That’s so not funny its beyond comprehension,” Brendon said, his voice leveled, although he sounded breathless. He shuffled away from her on the bed as she moved closer, a wicked glint in her eyes. “Evelyn!” He sat with back pressed against the wall.
Evelyn, on her hands and knees, moved forward until her face was mere inches away from his, her hands touching the insides of his thighs.
His lips twitched and his eyes were glued on her face, the expression on his face compelling her. Without even realizing it, Brendon’s face was inching forward until their lips were almost touching. His hand rose to hover somewhere near the back of her neck. A quick glance down showed Evelyn the close proximity was affecting him.
Her lips curving into a sensual smile, she let out a low chuckle, grazing her lips against his brazenly. He moved forward to catch her lips with his. She dodged the kiss, pulling away from the hand that grasped the back of her neck. Her grin grew as she noted the disappointment and confusion that swept over Brendon’s face as he frowned at her.
“Gotcha!”
Evelyn burst out laughing as Brendon cursed.
“What the hell was that!?"
