Once again things had settled down and the tour was going along without any drama. Donna hadn’t brought up Helen or Merri when we’d talked to her. She was so excited about the prospect of a grandchild it was all she talked about. When I had talked to her just this morning she had brought up something I hadn’t even considered before, Gee and I would need a bigger place. Our one bedroom apartment was fine for the two of us but we were gonna need room for our baby. While the idea of leaving our apartment saddened me I was at the same time excited about getting a place that would have room for a nursery. At times I was still in awe at the fact that I was truly going to be a mother. The dream I had given up on years ago was going to come true.
We had arrived at the next venue but the concert wasn’t until the next night. The tour had arrived a day early so the band could be part of a music awards show. I was excited and nervous. This was really the first time I would be seen in public outside the concert venues with my husband. I was stressing on what to wear when Alicia walked up to me and handed me a cup of coffee.
“Here, you look like you can use this.”
She was right. I hadn’t had a cup yet this morning and I really was craving the caffeine. “Thanks. What are you wearing tonight?” I asked.
Alicia laughed, “Not sure. But then no one is really gonna be looking at me. You however are gonna be in the spotlight. Lots of people are interested in seeing Gerard Way’s wife.”
I frowned, “Thanks a lot.”
“Well it’s true. You have to know that because you and Gee married so quickly after his break up with Eve people are interested in you. I found an article about you in a magazine.”
“An article about me? What the hell?” I didn’t like the way she sounded.
“Hold on a minute.” She got up off the sofa were we were sitting and returned a moment later holding a magazine. Quickly she opened it to the article and handed it to me.
I read through it quickly. Mostly it talked about how Gerard had been engaged to Eve, a new recording star, and then it moved on to talk about me. The article gave some fact about where I was born and how I’d originally joined the tour working for Reprise. While it didn’t come out and directly say it the tone of the article made it sound as if I’d had been the reason behind the break up of Gee and Eve. I tossed the magazine down.
“Shit, Eve a new recording star?” I scoffed.
Alicia smirked, “Yeah, isn’t that something? Stupid bitch loves the publicity. I was pretty pissed when I saw how it makes you sound like you broke up a happily engaged couple.”
I took a sip of coffee. “Well I did break them up but they weren’t a happy couple.”
“I know.” Alicia said softly.
I sat back trying not to get nervous. I’d never been in the spotlight before and the whole idea was frightening.
Gee walked on to the bus, grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down next to me. He gave me a kiss but I could tell something was bothering him. “Brian just called. He told me Eve is going to be at the awards show tonight. I was thinking maybe you’d rather stay here.”
“Why?” I asked trying to figure out his thought process.
I could tell he was trying to choose his words carefully, “Laura, you’ve never really been to one of these things. It’s kinda crazy. There will be lots of press and I just don’t want you to get upset.”
“Why would I be upset? My husband and his band are up for an award. I want to be at your side.”
He looked over at Alicia and I could tell he was hoping she would help him explain what he was trying to say.
“He is right, it will be kinda crazy and I like said before lots of people are gonna be paying a lot of attention to you.”
Gerard sighed, “Look I’ve heard that Eve is going around giving interviews making it sound like she was hurt when I broke up with her. She’s making it sound like you broke us up.”
“I did.” I reminded him. “I totally did. Told you not to marry the bitch and asked you to marry me.” I knew I sounded like a bitch but I hated Eve with a passion. I knew she hadn’t loved Gerard. I could still remember all the vile things she’d said about him while they were still engaged. The fact that she was acting like an injured party to get attention pissed me off.
Gerard put his arm around me and laughed, “Okay, yeah you did but probably it would be best not to say it that way.”
I sighed, “Yeah, I know. She just pisses me off. I want to go tonight. I’m not letting her keep me away from your side. I won’t be intimidated.”
I could tell he was worried so I smiled.
“I do need to go shopping though. If people are gonna be looking at me I want to look good.”
“Honey, you always look good.” He said brushing the hair from my eyes.
“Shopping, Gee. Gotta go shopping.”
He laughed, “Damn woman, okay. Give me an hour to take care of some stuff and I’ll take you myself.”
“Oh, can I go?” Alicia asked perking up.
Gerard nodded, “Sure, I’ll tell Mikey we have to take our women shopping and out to lunch. Sound good?”
Alicia and I both nodded. It sounded wonderful.

Shopping with the guys turned out to be a lot of fun. We drove to a large mall and hit the stores looking for new outfits for the awards show. Several times the guys were stopped by fans asking for autographs but none of us minded. The fans were polite and just excited to see the guys. One young girl even asked me for my autograph. I was shocked at first but happily signed my name. To be honest I loved signing Laura Way. She then asked me to pose for a picture with her, which I was more than happy to do.
Alicia and I were in the dressing rooms trying on clothes when I good mood started to evaporate. Nothing I tried on looked good. I kept looking in the mirror thinking I looked plain and boring. I tried not to compare myself to Eve but it was hard. The woman was truly beautiful. Knowing she would be there made me feel worse. I didn’t want to look dowdy. That added to the fact that I was just pregnant enough to look slightly heavy made me view everything with a critical eye.
“What’s wrong?” Alicia’s voice came from the dressing room beside mine. She had heard me sigh.
“I can’t find anything that looks good.” I said staring at the pile of clothes I’d just tried on.
I heard her open her dressing room door. “How’s this look?”
I opened my door and peeked out. She looked great in a very rock star wife way. “You look wonderful.” I said trying to smile.
Alicia understood how I felt. “Okay, can I pick out some things for you to try on?”
“Sure.” I sighed, “Whatever.” I sat down staring at myself in the mirror waiting. She got redressed and I heard her go back out into the store. Soon she returned with an arm full of clothes.
“Okay, try this on first.” She handed me a pair of black silk pants and a wild looking low cut sequined top. This so didn’t look like anything I would wear and I told her.
“Time to break out of the box.” She laughed, “Trust me this will look great on you. The empire waist will hide your tummy.”
I eyed the clothes, “So not me.”
“Just try it on.” She urged. “And come out in it. I want to see.”
A few minutes later I opened the dressing room door and stepped out.
“Holy shit you look hot.” Alicia said, “Seriously, let Gerard see.”
Okay I had to admit that while this wasn’t something I would usually wear I did like the way it looked. I nodded and walked out of the dressing room. Gee saw me and I could tell by the look on his face he liked what he saw.
“Wow.” He said. “That looks fucking hot.”
I giggled happily. “Really?”
He nodded, “Oh hell yeah. Wear that tonight.”
Suddenly I was feeling very good again. I was determined not to let myself get nervous. Tonight was going to be fun I kept telling myself. I wanted the world to see how happy and proud I was to be Mrs. Gerard Way.

The butterflies in my stomach didn’t hit full fluttering until we arrived at the ceremony. As our limo stopped I glanced out at the sea of faces waiting for the band.
“Holy shit, that’s a lot of people.” I whispered.
Gee took my hand in his. “Don’t worry. I’m not gonna leave your side. It will be fine.”
I nodded as I gripped his hand tighter. He and I were the last to leave the limo. As soon as we did I could hear his name being screamed. This was something I’d never encountered outside a concert setting. Gee put his arm around me and we started to follow the rest of the guys inside. Suddenly an interview appeared and we all stopped. Flashbulbs were going off all around us and I swayed slightly. Ray was answering a question and Gee leaned over and whispered in my ear.
“Honey, smile. You look terrified.”
“I am.” I whispered.
His arm tightened around me. Suddenly I was scared. How the hell did I think I was going to be able to do this? The interview moved towards us. It was then I noticed Eve getting out of a limo that had just pulled up. Seeing her made me realize I had to pull myself together.
“Gerard, good luck tonight.” The woman with the mike said.
Gee smiled. “Thanks.”
“And I see you brought your wife with you.” She greeted me and stuck the mike out.
“Hello” I smiled brightly.
“Are you excited about tonight?’ She asked.
“A little.” I grinned. Okay I wasn’t saying much but at least I’d remembered how to speak.
All around us the fans were calling out the guy’s names,. Some had even come with signs they were holding up.
“Think the band will win the award?”
I could tell Gee wasn’t used to having someone speak to anyone but him. He started to answer but I spoke up.
“Doesn’t really matter.” I said speaking up to be heard over the screaming. “Look at the wonderful fans here. What more could they really need?”
My response was met with more screaming for the band. The interview laughed, “I think you’re right.” She turned back to Gerard, “Good luck anyway. I’m sure an award would still be nice.”
Gee smiled, “Laura is right. We have our fans. It’s all we need.”
We turned to walk into the hall. Alicia fell back beside me. “Well done.”
I smiled, “Holy crap, I’m nervous.” I whispered.
“You are doing just fine.” My husband said softly.
We were shown to our seats and I tried to calm down. Looking around I saw so many big names in the music industry. This was surreal to me.
Right before the show started I noticed a man come over and speak to Ray who was in the aisle seat. He listened a minute then turned to lean over Frank and speak to Gee. I strained to hear what was being said.
“I don’t think so.” Gee said
I’d heard what was being asked. They wanted Gee and I to do an interview after the show. “We should.” I whispered in his ear.
He turned to look deeply into my eyes, “Sure you want to?”
“Yes.” I answered. I wanted the world to know that Gerard Ways wife wasn’t a bitch like Eve was painting me to be.
Gee paused a moment then turned and told the man that we would be happy to do the interview.
“You don’t have to do this.” Gee whispered in my ear.
“I want to.” I replied taking his hand in mine. “I want to tell the world how happy I am to be your wife. I want them to know you are a wonderful husband.”
“Wife, I love you.” He whispered looking deeply into my eyes.
The lights dimmed and the show began. “Husband, I love you too.” I whispered back. As I sat back in my seat I noticed that Eve was sitting a few rows behind us. She was staring at me with pure hatred.
