-Chapter 02-
Selphie dropped to her knees as she stared at the
burned out remains of the base.
"I should have realised," she groaned.
"Isn't this...?" Irvine asked.
She nodded. "Now, we're back to square one."
"How about a poodle?" Irvine was back on the subject of
puppies, again.
"Ugh," Selphie crinkled her nose. "Squall and Poodle don't
go together! Well, let's go in. Maybe some of the records are
still intact."
Irvine thought the chances of this being the case were very
slim, but he followed her in all the same.
"This one's a wash," he told her, playing with a few exposed
but long-dead wires.
"Same here," Selphie kicked an overturned chair. "Looks like
they didn't want any enemies to find out what they were doing.
All we know is that Squall's mom was a ... Galbadian Soldier!
Great Hyne, I'm such an idiot! Laguna was in the Galbadian
Army. I can ask him about the project. I bet he'll know."
Irvine followed her out to the car, humming all the way back
to Esthar.

"Project what?" Laguna asked.
"Experimental Matrix Project 4." Selphie replied.
"No," Laguna shook his head. He went over to the water
dispenser and got himself a drink. "Please, I don't mean
to be rude, but I was sick all week last week and I have
a lot of things to catch up on. Come back some other time."
"We could help if..." Selphie began.
"Leave," Laguna growled, uncharacteristically.
Selphie nearly ran from Laguna's office, dragging Irvine
along with her.
"Well, that was a dead end." Irvine remarked upon finding
himself back in the car. "Where are we going?"
"Galbadia," Selphie told him. "Laguna can't be the only
ex-Galbadian Soldier around."
