When I got to the top of the stairs I stopped at Chris's room. This was my favorite place to be, even though God knows I shouldn't be in here if i value my life. My eyes scanned the pictures set p on his crumby dresser. Wow his room was fricken spotless besides for that damn dresser. That's the one thing that should stay clean. My eyes stopped at the picture with Chris and my dad on his the grade graduation. H was so damn proud he was crying and hugging him and all. I remember him saying
"God job boy I'm proud of you. My boy made it through school."
He gave him a hug and ruffled his hair. He sniffed up and tried to hide the tears.
"I told you I would dad. You owe me 5 bucks by the way."
A wide grin spread across my father's rugged but warm face. His eyes shined and he chuckled.
"How about I'll give you 10 bucks if you make it through high school."
"Deal! Can I have it now if I promise I will?"
"No way ranger! 10 bucks in 4 years or 5 bucks now. Your choice."
Chris sighed in defeat.
"Fine I'll wait. I'll get some money out of old Uncle Bob anyways."
"That's the spirit kid. Don't slack off now if you want that money. Make me proud."
Chris was beaming.
"Course I will. You ain't got nothing to worry about dad. Just come to my graduation with cash."
"You got your self a bet."
They had matching grins as they hugged again.
Nether of them had any idea he wouldn't live long enough to see his next graduation. Or mine.
